Shifter Mods & Dash × 4BT Cummins Discovery #47 [Land Rover Build]

- Finally refitting the dashboard & modifying both it + the 4BT's new NV4500 manual transmission shifter to clear it. I thought I would have to build a custom linkage for the shifter, to get it to reach under the dashboard, but a simple offset bracket did the job perfectly. Now with the dashboard in the next step is adding all the gauges!

~ PART#47 in a project dubbed "Nanuuq" to swap out my lifted Land Rover Discovery 2's blown 4.0L V8 & boring ZF auto for a Cummins 4BT 3.9L turbo (Holset Super HX30W) diesel 4-cylinder engine (Bosch P7100 pump) with an NV4500 5-speed manual transmission. The AWD 4x4 will remain with the LT230 transfer case divorced behind it all, & plenty of Dodge 6BT parts too. Another big phase of my custom DIY build to create a do-just-about-anything off-road / overland rig. Did I mention it's a camper too?

Its going to be a sad day when this build is done and I cant drool over these awesome videos.
Thats the downside just what you said when the build is all done
Agreed! But I have so many plans I have a feeling it will slowly evolve as long as I can manage :)
What a perfect morning watching this video, it’s like a reading newspaper with cup of coffee lol 🤣
☕😁
Can’t wait to see this thing on the trails
Same! The torque is so awesome!
Im happy you decided to bring back the dash...
Really feeling like a proper vehicle with that in again.
@@Tinker1837 would be happy to see how the instrument gauges are installed in detail.
I always go back to your videos, can't help think how creative and detailed you are!
Then you will definitely like the next video 👍
Awesome on too many levels with the added beauty from the sound of the charge air system depressurising after switch off.... sweet
The sound is even better than I hoped for!
The sweet diesel sound...❤️
Music to my 👂
It's looking better every vídeo I like a lot that discovery congratulations 👍👏
Happy you like :D
Great to see more progress. Lovely paper Dash
Love the surge-like sound when shifting
I'll try and keep them coming 👍
Just don't forget to go to a Land Rover dealer tellum it's making a funny noise 😄 let the mechanics look under the hood
I can hardly wait to bring this thing to a Rover dealer AND the Cummins dealer haha!
Nice... looks like some fun test driving.
Very much so!
How awesome to see you posting videos again.
Looking like a proper car again now you were able to put the dash in again.
Glad to be back at it & surprised too how much a difference the dash going back in had made on the "feel" of it.
Yup. Love this thing. That's a butt load of time you've put into and it shows. Gonna be a fun rig.
I'm so glad I stopped tracking the total time lol
This is the first engine i learned in 2008, Cummins 4BT3.9C205
😀🙏👍
Great engine to start on!
Очень круто 👍! Давно ждал твой новый выпуск!)
Happy to be back!
This thing is sick
It's so fun!
The turbo blow off valve gives me a mangasm every time. 🤟🏼
I can't wait to hear it with full boost :D
@@Tinker1837 how many pounds are you at now? And what’re you aiming for
Wastegate pressure, which I think is ~18psi, and the plan is 30-35 depending on the exhaust temps, then maybe 40-45 once I get the head studs installed. Plan is to try to get as much power as possible, but keep it strong down low + decent MPG.
@@Tinker1837 yo brother what’s that self etching primer you use? And where do you find it
Do you mean the POR15 self etch stuff or the SteelIt stainless steel spray? (I've had mixed results with the POR stuff, but then I'm not great with paint in general)
Now you need an offroad trailer to make use of that torque!!!
For sure! Can hardly wait to haul race cars to tracks & try those kind of trailers out :D
Spot on.
Feels good to finally start stretching it's legs.
@@Tinker1837 I bet. Have you given it full throttle yet? I’m curious how well the 4bt pulls.
I've only hammered on it a few times, and honestly hesitant to push it until I get the rest of these gauges installed (main concern is the exhaust temps). I'm also only at partial boost, since I still have to bleed off the wastegate pressure to get it up to the planned 30-35psi (2-2.4bar), but again I need the EGT gauge to tune it proper.
Looking better...those 120v switches though. LOL
Shifting still feel solid with the off-set?
Couldn't resist doing something silly for those temporary switches 😁 Yep! And the position is in now is so much better.
Damn she's coming along!
About time too!
@@Tinker1837 I'll be getting started on mine soon. Been saving up for this for awhile.
Nice! Yeah I feel you on that, been 4 years now of gathering parts for mine.
@@Tinker1837 I can only hope to be as meticulous as you've been. I've got a 24 valve, eaton TX14607B, dana spicer S130 rear and Dana super 60 in 4.88. Have aluminum hutchison MRAP rims and 43 inch Michelin XL's. Will be using the Timkin air shift transfer case. Alk of this is going into my 1967 Chevy C60. A truck I paid $6500 for almost 2 years ago. Has 17,500 original rust free miles.
@@bladenrexroth2555 Woah that sounds like it's going to be a proper tank... in like all the best ways haha!!
Loving the build.
This where your attention to detail comes into play.
What power is the engine running mate?
Just don't look too close to my paint work... not so good at that haha! It should be in the ballpark of 200hp & 500tq but then 250hp & +600tq once I turn up the boost (after gauges so I can keep an eye on things)
A billet wheel hybrid hx35 would make this thing a monster!
Agreed! Lots of upgrades to come, and I even made sure to leave room on the hot side for a second turbo :D
@@Tinker1837 ohh damm I'm excited, compound turbo 4bt disco is going to make this chanel explode!
Love the rig! I’m doing an LS swap into my Disco 1 and I’m going to use an NV4500 too. I’m building the engine now and looking at how things are going to fit. What did you do about the blower motor and vents? In the Disco (im assuming it’s the same for the D2) the rear vents start where the shifter goes. I’d like to keep the air up front but they look to be connected. How are you planning around this?
I removed that whole HVAC assembly, and my plan is to install either a universal heater/ac unit like what you would use for a classic car, or build my own unit from aluminum (but still linking into all the original vents using flexible hose instead of the original blow-molded plastic pieces). So cool to hear of another Disco coming back to life with a swap! Best of luck getting her going, but with an LS I don't think you'll need much luck, those engines are a dream to work on these days :D
Are you regretting not importing a Td5 Discovery instead yet? haha;P
Nope! The 4BT is 💪
@@Tinker1837 I personally prefer the Td5. Much less tractor-like sound. Remapped Td5 with straight pipe and hybrid turbo is alot of fun too. But the Cummins will beat it on torque anyway, but i prefer the smoothness of the Td5. Don't get me wrong. I love cummins too, and I love your swap😀
Very good 👍🏻🇺🇸🇧🇷
Thanks! 😄
make sure to put a jam nut on each bolt so they don't come loose well driving
On the shifter? Oh yes there is a locknut & thread locking compound on both sides!
Hello Tinker, wait a little before turning off the engine when you work it at full load; the turbo runs out of lubrications and can fail you prematurely. Greetings from Colombia!
Good info!
I think the sun visor of my D-250 (6BT Cummins) has a recommendation of 30-45 seconds of idle before cutoff
@@derajyellat102 That long?? Woah, did not realize that... but good to know!
@@Tinker1837 I went and checked this morning, it actually recommends 30 seconds of idle before running. I do know that John is correct in his recommendation. The turbo needs to cool off before you shut the engine, otherwise it will burn the oil inside of the turbo causing a dry start next time.
Right, and just to be clear that I do let it run a bit after hard running, but if it's just cruising around (especially in the cold lately) I just click it off.
It's cool, wouldn't mind a hood and a proper exhaust
It's on the list!
A dream car become true, awesoooome,
Long time coming!
Thanks for video, any ideas about the Hood?
I have a fun idea for the hood that I think people will really like ;)
Nice gauge pod! Is it possible to tune out the black smoke on the 4bt?
Oh yeah I plan to do some tuning to clean up that low-end smoke.
@@Tinker1837 nice!! Superb build 👍
Thanks!
cool
Glad you like :)
How nose heavy is it? I love watching your series, you've inspired me to build my range rover
Should be pretty balanced with the added weight of the the camper in back, but I need to scale it again to be sure 🤔 Glad you like!
I’m not sure where you’re from but it looks familiar! I’m out of Lansing just off 96, so if you ever see a lifted Silver Disco 2 that’s me 👋🏻
I always throw a wave when I see one, and not often get one back, but seeing them lifted is fairly rare!
@@Tinker1837 I was told “we don’t wave, that’s a Jeep thing” 😂😂
Wow💛💙
:)
Short gears - lot of torqu, but slow speed 🤔 hi from Belarus!!!
Hello! The gears just seem that way because I do not have the engine rpm gauge to see how high rpm I can shift.
Do you have a plan on the electric part??, like radio, ac, gauges, I need some ideas, it will be helpful😅
I do! I still have a few more temporary wiring jobs, but I am about to dig into the final electrical build. Just ordered nearly 1,000 feet of wire + handfuls of switches and connectors... lots of work incoming!
@@Tinker1837 thanks for answering, hope to see the electric part soon.
Witch engine and a gear will it fit for a disco 2 2000?
...huh?
good....
Thanks!
are those household light switches on the dash
Sure are haha! (they are temporary)
Hello and welcome! I think that converting from automatic to manual will be difficult because of the electrical and computers. I decided to build all new electrical for my project, but I will have videos on how I create them.
going to college in the zoo need some local trail recomendations
Most of the "good stuff" is going to require getting north of GR and into the forests, but there are some parks nearby kzoo to the south and southeast: Rouch Off-Road Vehicle Park, Bundy Hill Off Road Recreation
@@Tinker1837 i have been to manastee and tincup springs and ofc broke my truck at silver lake once too
Drummond island & the Keweenaw are my favorite areas in MI, and it's almost like a rite of passage to break down out on those dunes.
@@Tinker1837 my rite of passage was jumping it and kissing the dune with my skid plate and radiator off of test
How much would you charge if I bring you a car and an engine to put together?
Why didn’t you just heat up the shifter glowing hot and bend it to where you wanted instead of adding the crossover ?
Because then I couldn't adjust it, but once I find the perfect spot for it then I may bend another stick to match this setup.
@@Tinker1837 I see
It will probably be difficult to hide this "crossover" shifter in a boot, so it's likely I'll end up doing like you've said.
Did you swap out the dash with a new one. If so, where did you get it and do you have a part number. Thanks!
Nope, that's the original dash. In my opinion a "you wrench it" style yard is going to be your best bet for not spending a bunch.
So have any plans on turning up the fuel and boost?
Oh absolutely! Once I get these gauges installed so I can monitor exhaust temps I plan to turn up the boost & tune the fuel to match. But I'll hold off on boost above 35lbs until I install head studs & decide on new injectors.
@@Tinker1837 you should see some of the wicked 4bt parts my buddy is making....he owns a shop called mountain machine just outside of Detroit
I feel like I recognize that name & the logo, maybe from a trade show or something 🤔 I'm going to have to look into that in more depth when I get back home.
@@Tinker1837 his claim to fame is cummins swapping h1 hummers......but he just built a bitching 4bt chevy blazer
I bet 6BT's are a great match for the H1's
♥️💪
😎👍
Is there a reason everybody swaps to a 4bt as opposed to anything else? Availability or price?
Well I think they're still very rare compared to common swaps like GM LS V8's or the TD5 in the case of the Discos. And yes they were inexpensive + plentiful about 5 years back, but are becoming exceedingly more rare as well as prices are skyrocketing! _(used to be less than 1,000 now well north of 5,000)_
I was thinkin more along the lines of an OM606, its better in every single way but u dont see many swaps
@@dustinfoltz4769 Better in every way... except: Cost, complexity, parts availability, aftermarket options, transmission options, etc lol
I mentioned cost in my initial comment. Transmission options really arent an issue anymore and since you mentioned the cons of the Mercedes wouldnt you agree they are far outweighed by the pros?
Outweighed? Nah, not with this build that has a primary goal of simplicity & ease of repair (regardless of where it takes me).
Где территориально это находится?
In the north of the USA
LOL 5:55 "ADJUSTING"
Keen eye! Wondered if anyone would catch that haha!
Hi there, I love your project!!. Did you block Cummins death pin or killer dowel pin? google it. It's super easy fix. Cheers!
