Beautiful South Limburg (NL) in the 1920s in color! [A.I. enhanced & colorized]

- This film contains wonderful footage of the Dutch province of Limburg over a century ago between approximately 1919 and 1921.
Limburg is the most hilly southern part of The Netherlands with the Vaalserberg being the highest in the country at 322 meters above sea level.
Many tourist flock to Limburg for its great landscapes consiting of meandering small rivers, hillsides, meadows, cloisters, churches and abbeys, and other great vistas. The Margraten American WW-II cemetary is another well-visited location.
The film ends with footage of the 'mergel' (limestone) quaries at the 171 meters high Sint Pietersberg that until very recent still was being used to produced cement. In this film many parts of this scenery were still in tact whereas nowadays only about [30%*] remains. After years of protest the ENCI company stopped in 2018 with exploiting these natural resources.

Rick, this is the closest to time travel I've ever experienced.
It surprises me how calm the town/cityscape is. It's really peaceful without signage and flashy advertisements everywhere

Prachtige beelden weer! Laten we niet vergeten dat mooie beelden als deze altijd doen verlangen naar iets wat er nooit was. Heerlijke tijden, enkel voorbehouden aan hen met veel geld. Verder moest er écht gewerkt worden, op het land en in de mijnen. Keiharde arbeid, zes dagen in de week onder zware omstandigheden en voor een paar centen. Dromerig kijken we nu terug op een sprookjesboek van weleer. Uitmuntend bewerkt Rick!
Helder! Al snel kan het nostalgische “Anton Pieck” gevoel ontstaan; de realiteit was echter allesbehalve romantisch... Hoewel men zijn/haar lot toen echt droeg, mede door het veelal rotsvaste geloof in Onze Lieve Heer en de angst voor de mensonterende armoede in geval van werkloosheid.

Wat fijn om Elsloo v vroeger te zien. De mooie plekken waar ik zo van hou ondanks dat ik uit Rotterdam zuid kom. Dit is wasr de tweede helft van mijn hart ligt
Dit is weer net zo prachtig als de andere beelden van het vroegere Nederland. Het mooist vond ik nog de laatste minuten: Je te realiseren dat al die grote mergelblokken in de mijn met de hand op paard en wagen werden geladen, per paard naar buiten kwamen, met de hand (!!) in stukken werden gezaagd en daarna met de hand op maat werden gemaakt op de bouwplaats... Wat hebben de vroegere generaties hard gewerkt en afgezien!

In some ways, yes. But, don’t forget world war 1 had probably just ended.
FYI: The Netherlands were neutral during WW-I.

05:00 - Mining used to be an important industry of Zuid-Limburg. Not much reminds of it today, industry and commerce have been dversified over the decades, and tourists enjoy the beautiful landscape and the lovely towns of villages.

0:00 Het romantische Elsloo vlakbij Meers waar mijn vader in 1922 werd geboren . Zuid Limburg is altijd mijn allerliefste plek van Nederland gebleven en ga vaak even door Meers naar Elsloo voor de mooie herinneringen .
Ik ben afgelopen herfst- en zomervakantie in Z-Limburg geweest. In juni weer! Elsloo had ik gemist, nu weet ik dat ik daar ook heen moet gaan. Dank.
So many insane stuff in here. 8:27 is my home town's square. Could've just been my (great-)grandparents in that shot. So many places I've seen so many times, but in a new light. Like a movie set!
At 8:38 it's the Basilica of St. Amelberga in Susteren btw. And I think that all the lime stone quarries and manufacturing you see going on is actually marlstone.

What a beautiful picture it is! I can see people 100 years ago in this film who look so animated as if they are still alive somewhere in the world. Nothing has changed in our human nature. They used to work, love, hate and feel sorrow as we are doing today. And they used to go to war as we are doing in Ukraine today.

Gij waart dan afhankelijk van een goede oogt als ge niet zou willen sterven van de honger zodat ge iedere dag patatte met dezelfde groenten uit uwen hof zou kunnen eten en ge zou al lang dood zijn want voor veel zaken waar ge nu naar de kliniek mee, kunt gaan zou ge destijds niet geholpen kunnen worden.

0:00 Ik heb dit plekje opgezocht op google maps, en het ziet er nog steeds vrijwel hetzelfde uit. En dat na 100 jaar! Heel bijzonder.
De weg is wel verhard nu inmiddels, en de schuur rechtsachter is verdwenen. Maar het is inderdaad nagenoeg ongewijzigd.
Ook de spoorweg onderdoorgang van Moorveld naar Geulle heb ik kunnen vinden en staat er nog net zo bij.

The home of the hermit and the Castle schaloen are within walking distance. If you ever find yourself in Valkenburg. Its worth the walk and the hermits home is open to public ocansionaly with a give what you want entree.
Sehr schöne "alte" Aufnahmen, so etwas sieht man nicht alle Tage und Super digitalisiert.

Wat een prachtige beelden weet je toch altijd weer te vinden, bewerken en met de wereld te delen, dank daarvoor! In mijn optiek is dit kanaal echt ondergewaardeerd, ik probeer het daarom zoveel mogelijk in het echte leven met anderen te delen!
Dank je wel, ga vooral door met het promoten! We naderen de 125.000 abonnees (nog ca. 400 te gaan). CZcams waardeert kanalen die gewijd zijn aan historie en video restauratie allesbehalve, gelet op problemen die wij onlangs (voor de tweede keer) met ze hebben ervaren. Hun reviewers constateerden dat mijn kanaal "no significant added value" biedt. Ik wordt nu min of meer gedwongen om video's in documentaire stijl te maken, liefst met talking heads en andere bla bla. Je kunt beter filmpjes maken van je kat die zittend op een robotstofzuiger door het huis rijdt... Het is triest om te zien hoe CZcams steeds verder afglijdt naar het banale moeras.

Echt serieuze concurrenten voor CZcams zijn er nauwelijks en het gaat me weer jaren kosten om daar een groot aantal subscribers op te bouwen. Dailymotion deelt ook maar 5% van hun advertentie-opbrengsten met de uploaders.

The limestone quarry at 11:27 is the Gemeentegrot in Valkenburg, not the st pietersberg in Maastricht. The entrance is still there today!😃 In the scene where the masons are working you can see a sign saying "Grendelplein" the square in front of the quarry entrance

The craft still exists today. All marlstone used in both new buildings and renovation is quarried in Valkenburg. Its still won and carved by hand 😃

A beautiful area and interesting film, and beautiful restoration.
I have to wonder what the purpose of this was originally. It almost feels like "B roll" or outtakes from some other production. There doesn't seem (at least to me) to be a narrative flow, it cuts from one thing to another and then sometimes back to something that seems to be related to something earlier, separated by many scenes. Mind you I'm still glad we have it, but I really wonder if it was intended to be a cohesive whole and I'm just not understanding it.
Romantized times. Really was harsh everyday. Potato and bread with sand on the menu every day. Teeth usually fell out before turning 20.
Many died from deseases and unhealthy work conditions.
Life for a commoner was hard but life was also simple.
Where do you get such "wisdom"? "Potato and bread with sand"?? As if the Dutch wouldn't wash their potatoes before cooking and bread was made by normal bakers. Holland has always been an agricultural country. Yes people didn't live much beyond 50 years.
In short: give us a historically verifiable reference.
@@Rick88888888 the average age of lets say 50, is skewed by high infant mortality. If you made it past the age of lets say 10, you would probably get way older then 50.
Toch verbazingwekkend dat er toch vrij veel van dat oude materiaal beschikbaar is.
Het meeste wat ik heb dateert uit de tijd dat Beeld En Geluid nog hun oude zoekmachine had. Met de nieuwe zoekmachine is geen land te bezeilen: ik kan vrijwel niets meer terugvinden, behoudens voornamelijk Polygoon spul (in lage kwaliteit) en hun user-interface is een drama...

The church was partly destroyed during ww2 and the top was later relaplaced. You can find pictures of that on the website.
