Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.
He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who revelled in his own contradictions.
All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. All formats released September 2nd 2016.
'Barcelona' was the first single to be taken from the album of the same name, in October 1987. You can see the original David Mallet video elsewhere on this channel. This alternative footage was filmed at the open air La Nit festival at Montjurich Castle in Barcelona on 8th October 1988, by Gavin Taylor. See also the beautiful 'How Can I Go On' and 'The Golden Boy', also filmed at this event.

To the fans, Barcelona is just one of his extraordinary hits, but for Freddie, it was the pinnacle of his career. He called it “a dream come true, although I wondered if our voices would match or she would accept to do it. I hope the people in Barcelona, well everyone, I hope they like it. It’s for the whole world."
Thank you for this incredible masterpiece, Freddie! 😇❤️

After Barcelona was selected to host the 1992 Summer Olympics, Mercury was approached to write a song as a theme for the forthcoming games. The idea was to create a duet with Caballé, as she was from the city. He had been a long-standing admirer of her and she in turn grew to respect his talents very highly.
This could not be sung by any other couple as well. It is truly a magnificent performance.
FM...wrote this song for Montserrat after he met her for the first time in the lobby of a fancy hotel...in her home town where she was born... Barcelona! He was nervously waiting..and impatiently pacing back and forth in the lobby of this fancy hotel...as Montserrat was late getting there...she was also very nervous to meet the great showman Freddy Mercury! How Adorable!! Respect and Love for one another's musical abilities! ❤ He commented upon hearing her sing for the first time... that she had the greatest voice of anyone in the world including himself!!! Sweet!! Montserrat walked through the Hotel doors....Freddy spotted her....and the lobby full of people ...just parted the the Red Sea...as they made their way towards each other. As they shook hands Montserrat thought to herself...omg his hands are freezing cold...colder than mine...so that shows me that he respects me as much as I respect him!!! Awe!!! How sweet!!! So.they both hit it off and stayed awake all night long singing together laughing together & most of all ...dreaming together!!! What a masterpiece they have given us to treasure for all time!! RIP FREDDY & MONTSERRAT!!! You both will never be forgotten!!! ❤💖💛💙💜💚

It is so sad that we are never going to see a performance like this again. These two fantastic voices are gone now, singing with the angels in Heaven. We will never hear Freddie's, or Montserrat's voice singing live again, except on their records. God bless you both and Thanks for the music.
Technically yes but AI is the dawn of an exciting yet slightly disturbing reality where we sort of hear our favourite artists, who have long since passed, sing again.
ОНИ ВСЕГДА БУДУТ У НАС В СЕРДЦЕ.
Surely, one of the most improbable collaborations ever. But, oh my goodness. This isn't a song, it's an exploration of the human senses. Total magic, and joy. Masters of their art, in glorious exaltation. 🎼🎵🎶🎤💛
As improbable a duo as they may seem, they recorded an entire album together as well as this duet. Freddie had a lot of respect and professional admiration for Montserrat and sought her out to collaborate musically. Barcelona was her home town and he wrote the song for her.
And it STILL takes my breath away!!!! If God is willing....then Freddy and Montserrat will welcome us to any/every afterlife we all live in....
@@TheLadybudd I totally agree. I have to come back, periodically, to refill my soul, with this amazing work of genius. 😊

Y freddie que?
This is one of those magical duets that you only get to witness once in a generation.Freddie Mercury could easily have been an Opera Singer if he had wanted to.He definitely had the vocal range to do it.
He had the vocals to do almost any genre. But yes, he could easily be a great opera singer
Freddie was Mozart of our time ❤🙏
No. He IS Mozart of our time.
Freddie devoted his life to music and art, he realized his dream, when I think about these, a Freddie Mercury passed away from this world and is still in our hearts, no singer has impressed me this much with his voice and style.
R. I. P ❤
Thumbs up if you agree that Freddie Mercury is the greatest singer to ever live.

Except Andrea Bocelli.
You're kidding right? Are you at all familiar with his work?
If only he didn't live a destructive lifestyle, he would still be here. :(

Always proud to say my mother sang with Montserrat Caballé. RIP. A true diva with class.

It is remarkable the fine treatment that Freddie had with Montserrat, the admiration he had for her was profound. Beautiful to see.
Imagine Freddie Mercury writing those words to you. Mind blowing. God I love him ❤️
Not only is this an amazing, powerful and emotional song but the main beauty in it is watching the respect he shows her in not trying to overpower her voice or showboat like other singers would have. Tragic loss to the music business. x
You realize they are not really singing live and it is pre-recorded in a recording studio., right? You can see there are no microphones in front of them. There is no outshining Caballe, her singing is always spectacular without strutting around and posing. Even here, Mercury is a bit rough. He did compose a marvelous opening.
@@stevepotfora7461 Rough? I thought he was wonderful. Of course it was pre-recorded, his voice was powerful, but not a powerful as The Lady Caballe. Plus, he wasn't all that healthy, either. It's a gorgeous piece of music. He really showed his writing talent on this one.

So beautiful, Freddie was such a talent taken from us too soon. As another poster said, this is not music, it's a masterpiece.
I'm from the former East Block and I remember 1984. I was 14 years old and in the morning, on the way to school, they played song I Want to Break Free in the only state radio. It was a shock because at that time we had a totalitarian regime and everything from the west, including music, was censored and could not be officially broadcast. Great song and especially daring for that years. And since then he is in my memory like a singer with a specific voice. However, I perceived him marginally only- just then was the gold era of Heavy metal and Depeche Mode for me. It was full of great bands and singers and Freddy was one of many only. As the world goes, only after his death I began to realize, how genius Freddy Mercury was. Its enormous energy was like from another galaxy. And I'm really sorry that I lived when he was here and I didn't take the chance to go to at least one of his concerts, to see his show and to hear his voice called. Honor his memory.
"The moment that you stepped into the room you took my breath away"
Incredible power in this line, he had such a peculiar voice...
Yes this is so true omg
Yes I think that too.omg when he said away I got chills
Yes it is!!
Peter Freestone: “When Montserrat sang ‘Barcelona’, after her first take was the nearest I ever saw Freddie to tears. Freddie was emotional, but he was always in control of his emotions, because he could let them out in performing or writing songs. He grabbed my hand and said: ‘I have the greatest voice in the world, singing my music!’ He was so elated.”
This is absolutely beautiful and breath taking. So proud of Freddie to have found his true calling on this earth. He was music. He was a marvel to behold. Thank you Freddie for giving us your unique personality and talent. It is ageless. It makes my heart swell. Love you Freddie!

The artistry of this incredible duo is unmeasurable. I wish I could have seen Freedie Mercury live
Had he lived, Freddie would have gone on to do all kinds of opera and Broadway as well. There was nothing he wouldn't eventually have tackled--and dazzled us all with.
Nonsense he was talented and multifaceted he passionately loves his rock band and rock and roll music he loves both
I think if he were alive today, he would probably be retired. Although he would've done alot different things, something tells me he either retired or semi retired. He would've been 71 years old.
I think he would've gone in that direction as well. He did want to explore opera in a solo direction, but he only jumped into it because of his failing health and wanted to do what he always wanted before he died. I think he definitely would've went down the opera/Broadway direction, doing a few Queen reunions here and there.
ፐኮህe FACTS you may have missed the point. All he was saying that he could achieve anything musically. Of course he loved rock music and queen
Judith Shipstad Yes, Freddie was a climber. He would have climbed every mountain big or small. It was what it was..... He said once im an interview "I've done it all" or was it "There's nothing i haven't done" Well, I have to disagree....if that aweful disease hadn't shortened his life he would have sang with many many others. My little bro drowned im 1984 he loved music... Everything on the top during the late 70s early 80s being just an 11 y.o. young boy. He would jam to his favorits. Two being Queen and The Gap Band. Makes me tear everytime i go into deep thoughts dreaming of what my brother would have been like. Would he have had children. Crazy because i would give anything to get a glimpse of him as an adult with the simplest stuff like arm pit hairs and a first girlfriend.. Same with Freddie, although he lived an outgoing life past his 30s i still feel us fans didn't see the best of him. Although we were blessed with what he did leave for us.
His music will last as long as mother earth lives.
Rest In Paradise....
Lil brother & Freddie 💙💙
This song can bring tears to my eyes and I'm British so what kind of effect does it have on a native of Barcelona? a beautiful city I've listened to the peice with the fountains in full flow very emotional Freddie you were a Genius rest in peace big man :-) x
+Brian Millar Tears and more than that. A Barcelona native talking
Brian Millar I relate to how you feel.. I'm American born i have a very small percentage of Spaniard mostly Mexican, irish and German. I'm sure my DNA has more on top of those being from USA we all mixed blood... These two high pitched beautiful voices blended perfectly. Cheerio Mate 😄💛😄
Brian Millar I was born in Barcelona at '82 living in Chile since 2010, I can't hold my tears everytime I hear this song.
goosebumps for a barcelona one =)
The effect that has on a native of Barcelona is that the city depicted in the song has gone. The magic of Barcelona has been dying as millions and millions of tourists have been coming to the city. Don't boubt: The Barcelona you visit today is nothing that an artifact, some kind of mirage, built for leisure of tourism. The soul and spirit of the city is no longer like the one that inspired the declaration of love of Freddie Mercury.
I was present that amazing beautiful night with my girlfriend,so young and
so many dreams happening in my hometown!the most beautiful city in the world..tears of joy still caressing my face everytime I hear "Barcelona".RIP Freddy and Montserrat ❤️❤️
