Denny, you're great! I started carving and tioling leather as a teenager, almost 50 years ago, but life got in the way, and I put all my tiols away. Now that I'm retired, I thought I'd get back unto it. So this is a refresher course for me, but I'm still learning a lot, you're ysing some techniques U hadn't thought of (like spritzing the learher, I always used a spinge.) I was.maunky trying to remember the order for using the tiils, as I haven't picked up a swivel knife in close to 40 years, and have forgotten a lot, but not how much I enjoyed doing it. I'm looking forward to enjoying this great hobby again! Thanks for doing these videos, my friend!
We appreciate the thoughtful comment! Thank you for watching, our friend!
Learned more in 21 minutes than 3 months searching through CZcams. Instant subscriber.
That is great to hear Sgt Zimm!
Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any qusetions!
Great video. Good explanations, great walkthrough of the tools, and overall very easy to follow. Thank you!
I'll dive straight into the rest of these guides
Really like your videos and ordering supplies from your store.
I've struggled with chasing small pieces while beveling. The leather bean bag is a perfect solution! Thanks for the idea!
Thanks! I did a bit of leather tooling a long time ago, but couldn’t remember the basics. Now I’m ready to start again!
Thank you so much for the interesting and instructive video! Success!!!
Denny you are awesome Sir! Cheers Mate!
Thank you so much for taking the time to show this. I am wanting to learn the skills as I am starting an upholstery shop for motorcycle seats. I have alway been intrigued by leather working even as a kid. So I’m hoping with my artistic talent and quilting talent I can now explore putting it all together and doing it on leather. Again thank you for showing me the basics….
I am from Indonesia. Thank you Mr. Denny, your tutorial is very helpful
This has to be the best video I've seen on how to start leather crafting
It's weird watching other left handed people do stuff, but this is amazing
Lefties are always the creative type....;) (typed by a lefty)
Hey guess what i'm a lefty too, I am also very crafty & creative, too.
Awesome video for us rookies.
I only have one eye and am legally blind to boot 😂 I started by teaching myself leather weaving now that I needed an eyepatch I am looking into leather carving stamping and burning. This video of very descriptive and well done thank you.
Thank you! I’m an absolute beginner and this was exactly what I needed. Glad to hear there’ll be more to come!
Yay! So glad we could help!
Pro tip : you can watch movies at flixzone. Been using it for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Dariel Lian Yup, I've been watching on Flixzone} for years myself :D
@Dariel Lian Definitely, I have been watching on Flixzone} for months myself :)
Thank you! I'm so excited to give it a go!
The pattern is here in the comments!!
Thank you. That was helpful.
Great video... it’s been 35 years since I did leather work... can’t wait to get going again!
Great project!
really great beginner video
Thank you so much, the camera work and angles were great, I could actually see how he was holding the swivel knife.
Carving is the hardest thing to capture right and we wish some things were better. But we were happy with this outcome!
Thank you for the kind words.
Very helpful ! I’m researching this trade right now and wanted to watch some videos before ordering any tools or supplies!
Glad you found it helpful. Let us know if you have any questions on tools or supplies.
you are amazing thank you
Thanks Denny. And camera person.
Thank you for watching, we were really trying to get it all in and be able to be seen. We are in hopes of doing an indeterminate carving series.
You are very good at teaching
Thank you! 😃
Thank you 😊
Thank you
great vidio Thanks
Un abrasó y un saludó desde México
Thanks
This is a great video! I am just getting into this hobby. There aren't any classes available in my area. Great info. I do have a question/request; can you show a detailed picture of the leveling tool and tell us the size? I think I understand the principle of hoe it moves but I can't tell if this is one of the tools I have or not.
Are you talking about the beveling?
Thank you for this! I don't have veg leather - quite expensive here :( But I do have thinner-type scraps. Some came off of an old leather couch & some from a leather store that makes guitar straps. Could I thicken them up by glueing 2 together maybe with thin cardboard or plastic insert? Do you also know how to incorporate 2 types of leather in one piece? Ex: The centre flower being a different leather than the rest. The main question is how would I make this look seamless?
You might check out our newer live videos where we do another series’s on this.
thankyou
Do you bevel both sides of the line or just one? If just one, how do you decide which direction/side to bevel?
Is it easy to straighten out the dekor on the leather ? I dont like the dekor and I want it gone. How can I do that ?
Danny what type of tracing film do you use
Could you post the picture of the flower you used for us to practice?
what number beveler u used there?
Great tutorial! Maybe use masking tape to tape your paper down then tape tracing paper to original paper then it won’t move.
sir what is the suitable thickness and leather colour for carving ?
Actually you can use almost any weight of leather that you want. Thicker leather will allow you to attain greater relief. The leather has to be veg tanned with no finish. I like 2.4-2.8 for some things and will use up to about 3.6 for others. The Leather should not be colored and be natural in appearance
Where do I get tracing film

Thank you so much.
O camera atrapalha muito. Quando estamos vendo proximo ele desfoca e coloca distante. O professor manda bem.
I enjoy watching your video's but just in case no one has mentioned, there are times it is difficult to hear you.
Hi there, I saw you put what I thought was a plain piece of trace paper onto a floral design & traced it,, but once done, you put that same piece of what you traced onto the leather, but i'm confused how this worked, because when you went to lay that paper onto the leather, I couldn't see any design on that tracing paper, how is this possible, I don't get it?
Melody England the tracing paper he used looked pretty thin and could probably see the drawing through it
The design is there. The overhead camera just doesn't show it.
Can you tell me how many mils thick is the leather that is used in this video? I'm working with a piece that is 2.6 mils thick and I'm just not getting the depth and dimension with my beveling that you're getting here. Trying to figure out how much of the problem is my beginner technique and how much is that a thicker piece of leather gives a more lush finished piece.
This piece is around 8 oz which is 3.2 mm.
Proper moisture content also plays into how the edges darken as you bevel.
Hi.. Thank you for your contributions. Could we get comparable results for vaketa leather with a thickness of 2 mm?
you look like a mix of Robert E Lee and Santa Claus
Rather then letting that paper crawl...tape the corners with masking tape.
Umm in watching you side tape your mall ,made mew wonder if carpal tunnel would be a common ailment amongst career leather carvers..
Your swivel blade seems really dull. I feel like mine would do better if it were more dull. Am I wrong?
Sharp and polished
All my cuts with the knife are always too deep, cutting through the flesh, exposing the bottom. Then the tooling, beveling, etc. really brings out the exposed bottom and it looks terrible.
I've been trying to carve and tool leather off and on for a year. I've made a few good pieces, but for the most part, I suck! I'm the worst leather carver on the planet! Getting ready to throw in the towel.
Oh, well, at least I can make some decent enough products for my own use.
If only the camera man was as good as the man carving...
Looking forward to seeing your videos.
Great video, camera operator not so good, very blurry picture most of the time.
These videos have been updated.
Oh didnt see them, will search. Thank you !!
Thank you
