It's here! The all-new MG4 has finally landed in the UK and we've just put it through its paces. With a game-changing price, is the MG4 the real deal?
To many casual observers, MG is one of the least likely names to be leading the electric car revolution. Famed for its leaky but quintessentially British two-seater sports cars, its reinvention as an electric car brand still comes as a surprise to new buyers. But here we are, almost two decades after the brand was sold off to Chinese owners, MG is outselling big names like ŠKODA and Land Rover, and has gone from being a rank outsider in the business to being one of the hottest properties.
The MG4 is a five-seat hatchback made in China, where it’s called the Mulan. Interestingly though the styling and some of the engineering is done in the UK.
It’s priced between £25,995 for the 51kWh standard range model with up to 217 miles of WLTP ability, up to the £31,495 Trophy with a bigger 64kWh battery. Our test car - an SE with the big battery - can manage 281 miles on a full charge.
Join Nicki as she puts one of the first models in the UK to the test. Has MG set a new benchmark for affordable electric cars? Watch to find out.

€30,000 _ €35,000 here in Spain ,wow, bugger off VW and Tesla. I don't need to go 0-60mph in 3 secs every time I get in a car. I just need to go from A to B in comfort without having my eyeballs taken out on price. Gonna be a massive hit all over the UK and Europe 👍👍👍👍

You could have mentioned that it is the cheapest and smallest EV coming to the UK that can actually tow and none of its rivals can, (unless you consider the other more expensive MG models) making it a huge selling point for MG. It would make an excellent camping/touring car with a small box trailer or micro caravan and for those who like the water you could tow a jet ski or possibly a small sailing boat, power boat or RIB inflatable ! I don't see this car depreciating in value much as it has so much value to offer at such a low price of £28,500 with a WLTP of 281 miles ! (Less if towing a boat ⛵ lol) !

It will be interesting to see how it compares with the Ora Funky Cat. The thing that puts me off the MG is the anti-corrosion warranty is only for a year, then the time and expense of annual body inspections to extend it a year at a time. With VW and Cupra cars the brands have confidence to guarantee them for twelve years straight off the bat. Looks a pretty dark interior and not sure about the two spoke steering wheel, maybe the dual motor next year will have a three spoke sports steering wheel. Possibly the facelift in a few years time will come with a rear wiper.

There is a point at which cost cutting really is ridiculous, especially when they get so, so much right.
I honestly think this may be the first car to challenge what I was originally aiming to get, the Ioniq 5. Not that I wanted to spend all that money, but that there was nothing on the market that would do what I wanted. The closest was the Niro - e, but "fast charging" on the LR version of that is still significantly longer than on this MG. Yeah, the performance of the Ioniq and Niro e are significantly better, but that is not essential, towing, LR, fast(ish) charging, these are essentials for me, the fact that it looks pretty neat is just a bonus.
    Well done MG.

We have an ioniq 5. There are only fast chargers where we are up and down the M6 which was handy for a Scotland to London trip. The local 50kw DC chargers are fine and with a home box, I have 200 mile range every morning (nowhere near the figures they quote). I love the spaciousness of the ioniq but this new styled MG is going to smash the market. Why oh why can't car manufacturers make attractive looking cars like this? The tech in the MG looks top notch at half the price of my leased ioniq. My local Scottish council gives free, yes free, EV charging at a car park in town. Perfect for walking to the shops or taking dog for a walk. The lack of rear wiper for the ioniq is a pain though... Why???
Great review, punchy etc... Wish they had a freeze frame with all the stats and any compatiiano..

Great review and very informative. This car will hopefully shake-up the EV market in the UK. Well done MG!
I understand that the smaller battery is the more durable Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) type (rather than the bigger packs Lithium Ion), so likes 100% charging. For only occasional longer trips that may be the one I'd go for.
Makes you realise what the ID3 could have been. If the MG4 has a few scratchy plastics and an infotainment system that actually works, then given the price there is no contest.
Also, as battery packs form the single biggest cost of an EV, it makes you wonder where the established car makers are sourcing their batteries from if not from the Chinese suppliers?

    • @TAL20013
      @TAL20013 Před rokem

Yeah, I mean you're looking at on average I'd say 200+miles per charge, and then you're looking at between 30-60mins charge time so, if you stopped every 200 miles and charged you're adding potentially 2-4 hours onto your journey. And I say 200+ on a charge on average because that would be the average, unless you're paying upwards of 40-50k possibly more you're likely only gonna get 200, on some especially older electric cars that were maybe giving out 200 brand new, you'll be lucky to get that after 3-4 years, maybe only 150+ and in winter I will likely drop again due to the cold so it will be 100-120 miles a charge. The electric business just isn't here yet or available for the masses even with this MG.

I didn't much care for Nicki's review of the MG ZS EV, as she seemed to be looking down her nose at both the car, and the sort of people that might buy it, but she's definitely redeemed herself with her overt, very cheerful enthusiasm for the MG4 Electric.
As to the car itself, it seems to give the ID.3 a good thrashing on styling, perceived quality and most importantly, price. As if the huge price gap between the two cars wasn't already practically impossible for Volkwagen to overcome, the MG4 is also forecast to have markedly superior residual values, meaning it should be available on a fairly bog-standard PCP deal from around £300-350 per month, while an ID.3 on similar terms would be much closer to £600.
MG won't have any difficulty selling as many of these as it wants to.
