My husband had the same experience recently with a gift from Germany that a friends family mailed for his kids in Ghana. There were crayons a couple books and stuffed animals inside and customs tried to charge double the amount of the noted costs.
My husband made such a scene that everyone in the office, customers and officials stopped what they were doing and paid attention to him. You could hear a pen drop. He told the officer that he wasn’t paying the fee and the “orphans” wouldn’t be getting their gifts and that “God would smite them because they are clearly friends with the devil” and they were done😂. He left without paying anything and they literally begged him to take the package. I was just amazed.
He does this everywhere we go in Ghana, Airport, traffic stop, government offices etc. At first I was so embarrassed of the spotlight on us but now I’m so thankful when he’s there to speak on my behalf especially😅

The country Ghana literally has no functional leader. How this and basically every transaction with any public entity are consumed with these naked criminalities and it is so normalized is just beyond insane. You should not even conceive development if these things are not nibbed in the bud.
If I am in charge of Ghana, in only 6 months, there will be such drastic clean up and shake up of the system, no police officer, custom officer and any public servants will take bribes or engage in any illegalities in the discharge of their duties.
The minister whose portfolio this falls under will go fast and it will cascade down to everyone involved. You cannot progress without measured performance and results through holding people accountable.

This is so upsetting and past tired!! Ive lived here almost 3yrs now and Ghana has really put a bad taste in my mouth.. This is my 3rd African country in which I have lived/visited and this place makes me question whether im still on planet Earth. There is literally no one to tell or complain to because the corruption reaches the very top and they are no different. This place will really have you fighting for your life just trying to stand your righteous ground to live right and be fair.. from the top of the nation to the ladies at the market and or boys boys, is HIGH THIEVERY. Imagine they use their brains for good, what Ghana would look like?! A world different. Ive learned by hook or crook, be it in the short game or long game, there is always someone looking to take what you've worked so hard for.. Its disgusting. I try not to rope everyone in to the same category because it isnt fair, but in all seriousness I have yet to meet an honest Ghanaian. Im still holding out hope but im certainly not holding my breath..I want to live lol frfr

I had a similar experience in Kiambu Kenya too. I even paid for the custom fees around midnight, on my bed, via Mpesa. It was so seamless.
Juxtapose that with my experience in Ghana, had to wait 3 days before they even decided to print my custom duty cost because they claimed the "printer" isn't working, and the "network" is down. Meanwhile those going through the "backdoor" process was walking out every minute.

This goro boy (agent) culture is almost everywhere in Ghana, especially Accra and Tema. If you're trying to get anything, the actual officials will try to convince you to go through goro boys...meanwhile it's usually a simple process you can do by yourself...but if you refuse to comply, they will try to make the process stressful for you so you regret. not only at Customs but same thing goes on at DVLA ... I know people need jobs in the country but agents should only be recommended to people who have a hard time understanding a process or people who think they are too busy to do such things by themselves, and would need some extra help....not to people who are capable of going through the processes themselves..

can you investigate and share with us how the Ghanaian economy evolved from being one the most "well-managed economies in West Africa" to defaulting on its loan and ending up knocking on the IMF door (that they initially refused to do) to get another loan to pay back its creditors and how this contributes to its currency, the CEDI to lose almost 50% of its value? And yet people are still entirely not demanding that the current government resigns? it will be great to explain the root causes.

In the past most African countries raise developmental funds through mineral extraction that the West pays pennies for. This government instead raised funds mostly for education and infrastructure without having to extract the equivalent in cheap minerals. Even though Ghana is seen as being in debt, I’m glad the minerals are still in the ground. The West has cheated Africa for so long we need to be smart. How can someone print letters and numbers on color paper and exchange that for your precious minerals? That’s insanity.

The staff hide and refuse service or communication until almost time for departure, then they argue, cause delays, and threaten to make passengers miss their flights at check in, customs, and the gate until it becomes obvious that they want confused desperate travelers to beg them to accept bribes. They are so wickedly greedy they can't see that some of the passengers are poor and worked to saved up several years to Return. Terrible Return. They only do that to other🖤.
