    In this Canon-specific workshop, you will learn the how and why of using multiple Speedlites off-camera. Our emphasis will be on the wireless system built into Canon Speedlites. We will explore all the settings on both the master and slave Speedlites.

    What an excellent video tutorial! Learned so much about my canon speedlite. It seems up to now, I have hardly even tapped the huge potential of my speedlite. This video has literally opened my eyes to whats possible, thank you B&H for posting this to CZcams.

    This video answered many questions I had difficult trying to find elsewhere. I have watched others try to explain some of the topics Sly Arena talks about in this video but none of them compare to how clearly and simple he does. Like Albert Einstein said "if you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it enough". Also wanted to thank BHPhotoVideoProAudio and Syl Arena putting this video together, this definitely help achieve a greater understanding of canon speedliting!

  • @TinaAraquistainPictures

    I just bought Syl Arena's "Speedlighter's Handbook," second edition. It has the picture of his son jumping over the water he used to demonstrate "Gang lighting" technique. This video is a wealth of information for the amateur and professional alike. I have been using strobes and pocket wizards because the speedlight's menu required me to actually read the manual (LOL) so I procrastinated. I loved this video and actually had no idea it was by the same guy that wrote the book I just bought until after I started viewing it. He is easy to understand and is sympathetic to the struggles photographers deal with trying to figure out the speedlight's operations. I look forward to other videos's by Syl.

    If you need to use the flashes manually, then yes, you must set each slave flash manually. Flash ratio control and groupings can only be set in E-TTL mode. If you are setting the output power on the external slave flashes manually, then you cannot use groups/channels.

    @BandH  Před 11 lety

    @RaudiA4 If you don't want an on camera flash firing, you can use Canon's ST-E2 Speedlite Transmitter (B&H # CASTE2). It's a dedicated E-TTL (II) wireless autoflash transmitter that can control an unlimited number of flashes with Canon Speedlites 420EX, 430EX, 430EXII, 550EX, 580EX and 580EX II, in two separate groups; A and B.
    The ST-E2 sets/controls all slave units function . The flash output ratio between groups A and B can be adjusted from 8:1 to 1:1 or from 1:1 to 1:8.

    Syl - I love how how you've simplified the whole Master-slave mumbo-jumbo for lesser mortals like me (I guess being a woman, understanding of such things comes with greater difficulty). A big thank you for this video.

    Answered a lot of questions I didn't even know to ask about the 580EX II, 430EX II (both from B&H), and E-TTL II.

    Pages 4-6 in the PocketWizard Quick Guide for MiniTT1/FlexTT5 for Canon included with the remote triggers, for Basic Wireless E-TTL: MiniTT1 to Flex TT5, Ratio Wireless E-TTL from MiniTT1 to FlexTT5, or Wireless Manual via E-TTL for MiniTT1 to FlexTT5 usage, use a 580EX II on the on-camera transmitter. Page 6 - the original 580EX or earlier flashes will not work. I would, however, recommend contacting PocketWizard to inquire if the Force TTL Master Mode would work for you.

    Great video. Demystifies the whole Nikons better at flash that everyone throws around. Went to a Joe McNally seminair which was just awesome but everyone ridiculed Canons flash system though it seemed most of them knew nothing off it.

    Elan 7N seems to be working fine with miniTT1 and Flex5 + 430EX. But I can't put the 430EX on the mini. I assume I can only put a Master on the mini, but that just doesn't make sense to me.

    Hi there, great video, very useful! I am using a 650d and you can use the pop up flash to command the slaves, however. The pop up flash is contributing light to the image and not just sending the commands??!! Do I need to use a master flash connected to the hot shoe in order to operate in the same way as the setup in this video?
    Thanks!

  • @andrewlaverghetta715
    @andrewlaverghetta715 Před 11 lety

    It was my understanding that the 650D would use the pop-up flash to send pre-flashes ONLY but only if you dove into the menu and told it to do so. There's a part where you see what looks like a master speedlite, but you can turn it off. The way I understand it, the master flash (speedlite or pop-up) sends out almost like a morse code of flashes to tell the other flashes what to do. Since these are pre-flashes, they don't appear during the exposure. The pop-up will fire unless you tell it not to.

    I'm trying to figure out if I can slave my speedlites with a speedotron kit I have. I use pocket wizards for the speedotron so I cant have a speedlite on there. Do I have to get another pocket wizard for the speedlites?

  • @DCUPtoejuice
    @DCUPtoejuice Před 12 lety

    Yes, it appears they did not test it, but the Elan 7N is an ETTL II capable camera, so it probably will work. Ironic thing is that TTL is VERY important for film and not so important for digital since in digital you can easily check to results in real time.

    Hello, I'm using a canon speedlite transmiter (st-e2) with a 430 ex II speedlite on a 5d mark II. I want to use two flashes to illuminate my subjects from both horizontal ends of the frame. Would I be better off getting an additional 430 ex II or should I get the 580 ex II?

    • @BandH
      @BandH  Před 9 lety

      Juan David Fernández The 580EX II will offer you a greater power option should you need to boost the light from one of the angles, and later if you find yourself in a shooting situation where you want a flash on-camera and one off, the 580EX II could serve as a commander to trigger you other 430EXII flash. If those features are required or appealing the 580EX II would be a good way to go, otherwise, I'd just go with a 2nd 430EX II unit. - Yossi

    So can you use your 4303x II wirelessly with a ID MIII?

    • @BandH
      @BandH  Před 10 lety

      As the Canon EOS 1D Mark III DSLR camera does not have a built-in flash, it requires you to use either the Canon ST-E2 Wireless Transmitter or a Canon Speedlite Flash with a built-in Master Mode (such as the Canon 550EX, 580EX, 580EX II, or 600EX-RT Speedlite Flash, or third-party flash with Master Mode capabilities) on the camera's hot shoe to wirelessly trigger the Canon 430EX II Flash off-camera in Slave Mode.

    We have off camera cables, the trouble is one side of the cable must fit into the camera hot shoe. You would then mount one flash at the camera position and a 2nd remote flash on the other end of the cable. B&H # VEOCDU6 B&H # VEOCDU33
