    I have the same sliding door and want to paint it white. Thank you for showing us how it's done! Now I'm excited to do mine.

    Holy cow! I never would have thought of using a spray paint on it. I thought there would be too much overspray. Great idea and you made it look so easy!

      Yes! It is super easy with spray paint and such a timesaver!

    Anyone attempting this should be reminded that in this case, overspray was not a big issue because the house is already white. If the house had been any other color, the wrapping paper or brown kraft paper would need to be taped all around the outside of the doors as well, otherwise you'll have white overspray and white spots on anything near. Great job, BTW, I may go ahead and paint my own sliding door frames as well! Thanks

      Great point - spray paint overspray can be a pain to clean up!

    Thank you! I have dark brown sliding glass patio doors from my living room to what is now an enclosed patio. I am going to paint them white and add grids. I had considered going to the expense of installing French doors however my contractor suggested I should make the new doors sliders in case someone in the future wants to open the patio again. So a big expense to replace them more or less for Cosmetics as they work well and are heavy duty. Hoping this gets me the look I want the cheap.

      Yes, adding the grids sounds like a great ideas too! I bet it will look beautiful when you are done.

    Would you also use spray paint indoors? I want to paint my sliding doors and windows black but from the inside. I’m not experienced with spray paint so it might be a stupid question.

    • @LovelyEtc
      @LovelyEtc  Před 4 lety +8

      Not a stupid question at all. And yes, I also spray painted the inside of my doors a few years ago and it worked great! Just make sure to open as many doors/windows as you can for ventilation and protect everything nearby in case of overspray.

    Take the doors off and paint on a flat surface. DONT PAINT THE TRACK! Take off the hardware. Use oil paint for covering wood stain. Put new rollers on

    Did you spray instead of using a paint brush for a particular reason? Do you think brush painting would work ok?

    • @LovelyEtc
      @LovelyEtc  Před 3 lety +1

      I spray painted because I find that spray paint (which is generally oil-based) sticks to metal surfaces really well. You could also paint with a paintbrush instead. In that case, I would use an oil-based primer and oil-based paint to help it really adhere well.

  • @mikeelmoretalks
    @mikeelmoretalks Před 3 lety

    Nice video.....can you share what kind of paint you used? I've heard oil based only on metal door casing...was hoping to hear you talk about that

    • @LovelyEtc
      @LovelyEtc  Před 3 lety

      Yes, I used Rustoleum Semi-Gloss Protective Enamel. It works well for indoor and outdoor projects and is oil-based. Oil-based paint is definitely a good idea and most spray paints are oil-based.

    So you painted the tracks where it opens and closes- does this spray paint technique chip away over time and come off at the bottom?

    • @LovelyEtc
      @LovelyEtc  Před 3 lety

      Yes, I did paint the tracks too. The paint has worn off the tracks a bit over time, but hasn't come off anywhere else. And even though it has worn off the track, I'm still really happy with it overall.

      @@LovelyEtc i'm planning on doing my windows and doors and am wondering if when you paint the tracks does that make it harder to open and close the door/windows? and if so what would you use to make it smooth again? Also I've been watching a bunch of tutorials, have you ever tried a primer before painting? I'm wondering if it would help the paint adhere better to the tracks and not wear off over time?

      Thanks! Yes, I painted the inside too and used pretty much the same process. I don't have a video because it's been a few years and it was before I did videos. It has held up really well!

    @hollymb41 Před 3 lety

    great video. How did you cover the part of the door that slides into the frame?

    • @LovelyEtc
      @LovelyEtc  Před 3 lety

      I didn't cover that part and it really isn't noticeable. But if you wanted to, you could definitely paint that part of the door - I would probably open the door about a foot. Use drop cloth or paper to cover the inside of the opening so no paint gets inside, tape off the surrounding area outside and then paint.

    No primer or sanding?

    • @LovelyEtc
      @LovelyEtc  Před 3 lety +2

      I didn't do any sanding first, just a really good cleaning. I've done this a few times on metal doors and windows and some of the times I started with a separate primer and some of the times I just used a paint+primer. Both ways adhered well and have lasted.

  • @ViviSchenk
    @ViviSchenk Před 3 lety

    I’m thinking of doing this myself but do you also paint the sliding parts or do you leave that? Thank you :)

    • @LovelyEtc
      @LovelyEtc  Před 3 lety +1

      I painted the track that is visible when the door is closed. I didn't open the doors and also paint the small strip that only shows when the door is open. Since I painted light metal doors white, the color contrast isn't enough to make the unpainted part stand out.

    Have you had any problems with chipping or scratching of the painted surfaces?

    • @LovelyEtc
      @LovelyEtc  Před 3 lety

      No I haven't had any problems so far! It has only been a few months since I painted these but I painted the interiors of my sliding doors several years ago. Those doors have a little wear to the handle and the bottom of the track where the door slides but otherwise still look great even years later.
