    Just popping into say that all measuring tapes are loose at the end for when you're measuring the outside of something (hooking the metal onto a surface) or the inside (pushing the metal against a surface) :)

    • @kraiw0
      @kraiw0 Před 3 lety +16

      right!! it gives you a true zero, the wiggle room is the width of the piece of metal on the end so that when you're measuring from the inside it accounts for the space that tip takes up.

    • @jenniviiv
      @jenniviiv Před 3 lety +3

      You can also just start measuring from 1" mark and then subtract 1" from your total measurement. Then it's perfectly exact. That's what I've been taught so passing along! :)

    Fun Fact: the reason for the end of the measuring tape being loose is to accommodate for the thickness of that end piece. That way when you pull/push the tip against the material you're measuring, it will already be accommodated for and the markings of the tape should be exact.

    I recently learned from the guys at " This Old House" that the tape measure shift is actually intentional and accounts for the thickness of the metal tip. The metal tip is exactly 1/16 of an inch thick. The way it works is If you’re measuring the outside of a surface and hook the metal end on the edge, that metal piece will shift out and create a gap, so that you aren’t counting it in your measurement. If you need to measure the inside, like in a window frame, the metal piece will shift back to fill the gap and calculate the measurement correctly.

    so the measuring tape space do have a purpose. so when you pull in it it will give you the number X, and when you push it in to something it will give you the same number X. the reason why you can move it a tiny bit, is the thickness of the metal end. the metal is 0.X thick, so push to measure is X + 0.X and pulling measuring is X - 0.X. but both methods gives you the same length of X, since it is able to move 0.X that is the thickness. and ofcourse the empty space between the tape end and the metal end, is for the movement and is also included with the numbers you read on the tape.

    I think they take the scoche into account with the width of the metal? Yeah "The metal tip at the end of your tape measure is a little bit loose for a reason. The first inch of the tape is short by 1/16 of an inch. This isn't and error: It's meant to provide you with the accurate readings whether you're measuring the inside or outside edge of a surface. This feature is known as the 'true zero' "

  • @colinwesley1356
    @colinwesley1356 Před 3 lety

    MEGAN!! THE TAPE MEASURE IS LIKE THAT TO PROVIDE ACCURATE "TRUE ZERO" READINGS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU ARE MEASURING THE INSIDE DIMENSION OR OUTSIDE DIMENSION OF SOMETHING!! (It pushes in for inside dimensions, and pulls out for outside dimensions)

    Not sure if you will see this but that "wiggle" in tape measures is by design and is there to compensate for the hooks thickness. You push against things for inside distance and pull away for outside. It is also the reason you should always let it contract softly else the rivet gets loose and the compensated measurement *is* thrown off a "skoosh"

  • @Deviliciousness
    @Deviliciousness Před 3 lety

    The metal at the end of the tape measure moves to allow you to measure accurately from both the inside and outside of things. You need to push against the surface for measuring inside and pull it against the surface when measuring from outside. It moves the thickness of the piece of metal.

  • @rachaelhansen
    @rachaelhansen Před 3 lety

    The gap on the measuring tape is on purpose! Because you use the end either pulling against something or pushing up against something. The metal part is like one mm thick and pulls away one mm so when pushed up against/pulled away from the measurement balances out
