The weirdness of Parasocial relationships

  • Stan culture and parasocial relationships have created an idea of an artist for the people without actual interaction. And sometimes it can become overbearing to an artist and create excuses for behavior.

i feel like with so many celebrities getting exposed this year, it's really important to start separating the art from the artist. I too have formed parasocial attachments with many artists and been disappointed when they were exposed as not being the best people. It's honestly just best to expect nothing.

Exactly! I like kpop and there are some artists that I get delusional about, but one thing is for sure, I am NOT defending them with my life online. You think exo can’t sing? I might be like woah wait a second. But you start saying you don’t like Baekhyun because he seems iffy I have to sit back and be like “boooo” in my head and keep moving. Idk these people. There was one person I liked and he turned out to be a damn rapist😐😐😐 after that I am NOT defending anybody or forming no crazy relationship with a celebrity because I DONT KNOW THEM. Hell I barely know the people I know in real life. These could be horrible people but I’m getting online screaming and cussing somebody out over them? Nah

@@kiki13451 true! I defended and ignored doja cat's red flags for so long just for her to date a predator and insult the people who pay her bills 😭 as someone who listens to doja, ariana and abel (all of whom have been problematic this year) I've just had to come to the decision to stop idolizing celebrities because we really don't know them. I'm also a K-pop fan but I am more of a fan than a STAN. I know that most idols have personas and act in certain ways to please fans. A lot of them may not even like their fans (korea has some of the most unhinged superfans so it's understandable) which is why it's weird to me how certain fans defend their faves so passionately.

I’m sorry but I can’t help but agree.. it is mental illness the way these people will sit for hours online and argue with people defending someone they don’t even know. It is sick. They will defend these celebrities more than they will defend their very own family. How can you invest so much energy into someone who does not even know you, besides entertaining you what do these celebrities do for you?

Yes, Doja Cat did make some valid points about the toxicity of stan culture; however, I think for her to tell her fans to get a job was a little distasteful, considering the same people that she's calling "dumb" are financially fonding her lifestyle by supporting her music.

It seems like no matter what these celebs do or choose to do or not to do, they lose anyway. Doja is just the first one who’s real about it and doesnt give a f what people say.

Bruh I forgot the conversation at hand but I think people were talking about how destiny’s child had good vocalists or something Beyoncé just outshined and I commented that my grandma (who’s 62-been around what before destiny’s child became a thing) originally thought that Beyoncé couldn’t sing when the group first came out but got better over the years and how she thought Kelly was originally a better singer. Tell me WHY this fan replied cussing me out, calling my grandma all kind of bitches and hoes??? And said show proof of Beyoncé not being able to sing. I had to correct her REAL quick but like PROOF OF WHAT. A video of my grandma from 1995 or something saying she thought Beyoncé couldn’t sing? TF?! And then said we love to hate on Beyoncé and we’re just jealous. Some people are so jobless and mentally ill that it’s so concerning especially over somebody that won’t even look at you. Do YOU know Beyoncé. I have some favorite artists that I adore maybe because their music or art helped me a lot but I don’t know them and I’m not about to get online cussing somebody out hell I probably won’t even defend my faves because idk them. They could be evil. If you think they can’t sing i might be like “can you hear” and keep it pushing. But some folks take it to the extremes for what? Beyoncé ain’t gonna follow you or like your tweet or put you on her website now

I know it must hurt for some of Doja cat’s fans to not be able to have their one of their fav artist say,”I love you guys” to them but that’s exactly the problem. It’s kind of para social but it’s pretty normalized to a point where a lot of ppl still don’t see anything bc wrong with that. Bc they feel like they can’t like their music without knowing their a good person or not with a little obsessive if you ask me . Billie Eilish might say she loves her fans all the time but it’s better not to get attached to mainstream artist’s as a person and like them more for their music bc it will only inevitably lead to disappointment, bc since Lizzo is the totally opposite of what she speaks about it her music, but thing wis you can still like their music, for example: liking Doja cat’s music doesn’t mean you have to like her. Never get *too* attached to famous personas

It’s weird that Doja’s fan pages are begging her to tell them she loves them and going to blogs claiming she needs to apologize to them. Those are literally fake pages that don’t post their own faces if they divest from Doja they will replace their profile pic with another celebrity and beg them to say I love you back.
I won’t say Doja worded things wrong, but she does not have to respond to any comments at all.

I get where your coming from because the people who came for doja for experimenting with her style and trying to mold her into what they want her to be need to rightfully be criticized for that. However, Doja tends to forget that no fan forced her to do pop music and practically capitalize off of it during her hot pink Era. No fan forced her to keep rocking the colorful wigs and ride the pop train. No fan forced her to keep comforming for the male gaze. Now maybe her team did or this infamous Dr. Luke I keep hearing about probably did press her about it but the Kittens (the name that she gave them herself and fed into Stan culture) that she complains about being toxic and being too up her ass and into her life they continued to support her album after album and live after live and they let her be bald headed, they let her continue to self hate, they even let her shade them whether it be direct or indirect, and during that Lori hill CZcams situation when she went off on her for simply telling things like it is her fans let that slide but now that she is finally being confronted about her problematic boyfriend and her crib is being inspected fbi open up in this bitch (metaphorically the fbi Is not coming for her) now she wants to deflect and make it about her fans being parasocial and crazy when it's like no baby fuck that take accountability, take responsibility and listen to your fans when they are telling you some serious shit about the man that you are dating because that is the bigger picture. It's crazy cuz we still are falling for her shenanigans and giving her what she wants because it seems like she has stirred up all this mayhem amongst her fanbase and they, well maybe I should say we because i will admit I supported her and am torn on wether I should anymore, we shame each other for liking her music and being fans of her while she is off the hook disrespecting her fans yet again by continuing to be with a man who has disrespected her fans and probably even disrespected her because given her history in the chat rooms... I am disappointed and I could very well deserve that because she is right in the fact that we don't really know her behind the scenes and vice versa but Still it is what it is Peace Love and Happiness chile

@@sweetnmoody5895 wow, thats a very detailed opinion, thanks for that! But to keep it simple, I think you’re right. I understand every fan’s point of view. But I also think idolization is not healthy. Not on that level.
We cant imagine what it must be like to be someone as famous as Doja, not those fake influencer type famous but really A list celeb famous, but we can look at the past, and what happens when the whole world is following your every move m, waiting for you to slip and fall? They spiral out of control and 10 years laters there is a documentary about what it really was like and how it went wrong. If she wants to date a guy and wants no opinion, I personally understand that. We dont know what happens behind closed doors, do we? She’s sick and tired of it because social media is super toxic. Now all eyes are on you and there is no way back since ‘Mooo’ came out. No more privacy.
I think she wants to go back tho, and make the music that she likes for people that want to see what the real Doja can spit. She wants to bury Industry Doja, but the world wont let her. Sad tho. Imma small town European rapper myself, and I dont think I’d switch positions with her life if I had the chance.
But I get what you mean, millions of girls would kill to be as popular. Im sure she regrets the blocking and knows she went a lil too far. But we all have our weak moments. Hers are just super public, we are farts in the wind. But , Peace bro , lets hope this doesn’t get out of control x

I have been reading different versions of human history different from the textbooks. It seems that humans have this almost genetic predisposition to see themselves as lower and someone or something else as higher, and we want to grovel and act like lowly slaves in front of anyone “greater”. But it’s something holding us back from evolving, from ascending so it is a huge problem we need to overcome. I just don’t get adults who still buy into this stuff with all this information out there. Got celebrities telling them damn near to their face that they only care about how much money they can spend on them.

    2. Doja brought this specific “fan problem” on herself. Why is no one speaking about how open she was starting out and in her days of fame. Why are people forgetting how severely accessible she made herself when she goes live on IG?. She didn’t create fans, she created stans.
