Sonor Perfect Balance pedal doesn't have a bearing?!

  • I'm in the market for a new pedal, figured I'd try out the Perfect Balance pedal since Jojo Mayer is one of my favorite drummers.
I was very disappointed to see this cheap plastic piece as part of the construction of the pedal, especially when the retail price is more than $250 for a single pedal.
Upgrading the part to an actual bearing is not simple, and would require changing out the "hooks" attached to the top of the springs. This is because (1) the hook for the Sonor pedal is too small to accommodate the DW bearing, and (2) the Perfect Balance pedal has a flat-sided screw under the spring, so you can't simply swap out the spring assembly.
(Not specific to this review, but this pedal is also really hard to fold / unfold. I feel like I'm at the gym getting a workout, that's how difficult it is to do.)
I'm not sure if I'll keep this pedal, I still want to try out the Yamaha FP7210A that Sounds Like a Drum uses.

I just got the canopus speed star bearing for $39 from drum center portsmouth. I feel it was worthwhile to switch the difference is marginal but I'm happy with my purchase.

I have one too, direct from Japan. I definitely think it’s a worthwhile upgrade.

The easy solution to your dilemma is to drill out the flat sided spring anchor hole. A 1/4" drill bit is big enough. I've done that to a few drum pedals because of the same problem.

The stock parts are not a cut corner. The pedals were designed to give the Artist (Jo Jo Mayer) some resistance. I use the Canopus upgrade and always will. But, the design of this pedal by nature, was a throwback to the feel of old pedals. Not using a bearing wasn't about how much the bearing would cost, it was about the feel the artist wanted. Maybe he was going for a tighter more controlled action. Sonor engineers everything they do to a fault. If they are doing it, there is a legitimate reason for it.

I'd bet if a blind test was done, a drummer wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the one with the bearing, and the one without.

Nice video. Some after market options/upgrades for this Sonor bass drum pedal to consider include the following products:- Eccentric Systems Quick Torque Cam or Canopus Drums Speedmaster Bearing. These 2 companies make these parts for various other brands and models too
