I absolutely love my set of Tama Speed Cobra double pedals but lately they just haven't been themselves. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that there was some sort of obstruction preventing the slave side of the center shaft from moving smoothly inside the master side. When I pulled the pedal assembly apart to see what was going on, I discovered 2 completely shattered bearings and 1 other one on its way out.
After some research, I found out that skateboard wheel bearings are the same size as the bearings that a lot of popular hardware companies (Tama, Pearl etc.) use in their kick pedals so I went down to my local skate supply store and picked up a set.
This video documents my clumsy way through restoring this wonderful set of pedals to their former glory.

6:02 - Regular WD-40 is hydrocarbon-based(mailnly naphta). It has nothing to do with water. WD - Water Displacement. For anyone with a DW 5000, they don’t take 608 skate bearings. They take 4 R6zz and 2 626zz. It would be wise to take the bearings out first and check what kind they are before purchasing new ones.
I cant even get to the bearing on the slave side. The bolt holding it on is some mystery size
I was about to say this. I had a 3000 series years ago, and I used to put skate bearings in my pedals after a few years. You are correct though, the dw bearings are slightly larger. Causing a lot of radial play between the shaft and the housing…. I never knew the size though, thanks for that.

Is this the case on the very very early dw pedals too? From the post-Camco era I mean. Asking because I’m starting a pedal restoration business and I was hoping to rely on bones bearings as an upgrade option.
This video encouraged me to try changing bearings for my pedal. I have now changed bearings for Yamaha double pedal and also for old Iron Cobras. For Tama it was super easy beacause the bearings come of and go in easily. Thanks for making this video!
I have Iron Cobra 600s. The bearing for the left pedal needs a smaller replacement. Which ones did you use? Thanks
I did this! It made all the difference in the world! Unfortunately I couldn't get one of the bearings on the slave off, but it wasn't in bad shape. So I left it on but I wish I could still replace it. 😢 Thank you for this upgrade.

I think its because of the design, my pdp has the basic same mechanics and I had to replace the bearings as well, I also got the trick drums universal shaft and the bearing mounted spring tensioner mount's that clasp together and fit over that lil' bearing, I noticed you have em' too... People may not think those make much a difference I know I didn't before I got a pair, but... You can tell ;) Thanks for the vid, never knew that about skateboard bearing, awesome Brah!

I was shocked at how loud the sound was when the old bearing was spinning. Please be advised: Hearing protection is required!!
I did this years ago… upgrading a Tama Camco pedal with high-end skate bearings. Just as an experiment for the hell of it really as there was no obvious wear in the original bearings. So not a huge change in this case but there was a slight improvement in speed/smoothness (visible as more back-front oscillations before stopping at the same spring tension).
How do you remove the bearings of the camco pedal?

Put my tekton seismecs on my cobra, actuall half that half swiss. One side cant fit the tekton due to its special inner metal ring

get some bone swiss ceramics. or any bones bearings really. your pedal will never fail again. with other skate bearing companies, however, you should always lubricate them after opening.

Were you not able to replace the right side bearing? I have 2 singles and don't know how to remove that black cap and the other end has a Allen screw at the end of the shaft that feels like it has loctite on it.

Is this possible with Iron Cobra 600s? The factory bearing is too big for the pedal to follow through without resistance and grinding against the medal. Thanks in advance
My iron cobra only a year old and it has this squeak situation, oil/grease didn’t resolve it. Hope I don’t have a bad one in only one year. Somebody told me go with pearl cause their bearings are better but I liked the cobra feel. Maybe I have to do all this, a shame for only one year old,
Depending on where you purchased the pedals from, you should be eligible to have them repaired or replaced under warranty
Sorry for the late reply. I had a squeak problem with my Iron Cobra 900 double pedal too. I thought it was the main bearings or the bearings in the spring assembly and wasted a lot of time taking things apart. I traced the squeak to both of the U joints on the driveshaft. A little bit of oil, (make sure you move them around in their full range of motion to help the oil seep in) and it's dead silent. You can hold the drive shaft and the beater and twisting them opposite each other and hear the squeak in the U joints. Apologies if you were referring to a single pedal.
Have you encountered problems removing that plastic cap on the slave side? It seems mine is well tight.
Question... Bearing-wise, is there any benefit from replacing brand new factory bearings with aftermarket skate bearings? I know that there is different bearing quality with skate bearings, so just wondering if for example high-end skate bearings would be any better than brand new ones that came from the drum factory. I'm using Tama Speed Cobra 910 Double Pedal.
i replaced mine on a 8 year old speed cobras which i didnt really use at all. the difference was noticeable and well worth the effort! get ceramic bearings, no need for big fancy companies, get the cheapest ceramics you can find and you're set! also check acd unlimited for available upgrades

It is, but one of the bearings on the double pedal is locked in permanently.
@@Lemon_Drums_USA really? Whoa dude, that bite a big one brah.. total suckage in that design. Did they design it like that purposely for failure and replacement cost I wonder?
FYI, I do not believe this is true. I was able to get all the bearings out of my 2001 Eliminator. Maybe the tiny screw was holding your bearings in and thought it was permanent? There is also a tight housing contributing to difficulty-but it can be done.
I wish the power glides were this easy
Is the shim necessary? Can I instead replace it with another bearing?
I suppose you could, the shim is exactly the same dimensions as the bearing :)

Yes, I replaced the shim with another bearing on my Iron cobra
I don't think greasing the inside should be necessary as the outside bearings are not supposed to spin in that housing, at least I wouldn't think that's how it works. Sure, if your bearing seizes, that grease might keep it working?
Wd 40 is Not water based. It will not rust anything.
