  • Part of surfing to me is appreciating the unique history of those pioneer surfers who laid the foundation for wave riding as we know it today. Open thinkers, creative craftsmen, natural water people, and risk takers are who make up the colorful quilt of surfing culture. This was a project in honor of that spirit. My friend and craftsman, Donald Brink and I had been spending time at the Surfing Heritage Museum in San Clemente staring at these incredible wooden Kookbox boards on the walls from Tom Blake. Our minds went wild with imagination of what it would feel like to ride waves on crafts like those that hung on the walls... so there in began the journey of Donald and I bringing our own 14 Tom Blake inspired Kookbox design to life.
    Hope you enjoy the experience!

I love how quickly you can put these together with no fiberglass or any of that modern stuff. About two years ago Tom Blakes design inspired me to make my own windsurfboard without any fiberglass, epoxy etc. It's just wood, glue and varnish. It's actually not much heavier than a normal windsurfboard and it's holding together well.
I think that we've gotten too used to thinking that you need modern high tech materials to build a surfboard. Tom Blake was able to make boards without that kind of stuff and he could have pushed the material properties of those materials a lot further.
Back then i was looking so hard for a video of someone making his board the way he did. So seeing this video now put a smile on my face!

I started surfing on a similar board without a fin ,here in Aus back in the day.Still remember the glide on the smallest waves. What was the bottom shape ,seemed to have chamfered rails .My memory of mine is curved deck, curved bottom, square rails and some nose rocker .Would love to get some dimensions to make one.I guess paulownia would be a big part of it these days.Mine was plywood and I am guessing cedar ,lots of copper nails, stainless tail plate with D ring ,and a drain plug on the nose. ......Thanks

This is really cool can we see something like this for bigger waves and more fins ,also what if we drill a windsurf mast on it
