  • This is an extended look at the time we spent with Tom Servais from our first episode of Finders Keepers.
Tom is a master photographer who worked at Surfer Magazine for decades. One of the most well-rounded shooters of all time, he is still taking amazing photographs to this day. Growing up in San Clemente, guys like Tom, Jeff Divine, and Larry ‘Flame’ Moore were so iconic to us because they were the guys that were capturing our heroes in action. Tom has always been so gracious with his time, and his calm demeanor and humble personality are always present when getting to hang with him.
Surf photography is becoming an endangered occupation. Growing up, photographers were the guys that were controlling the narrative of marketing and creation in the surf industry. We would wait for the new issue of magazines every month to devour the pages till the next one came out. Sometimes the photos were even better than the video footage because they allowed your imagination to fill in the blanks. Today, we have a constant stream of content readily available at any given moment, but back then those images felt larger than life.
This video is some extra footage that we found to be interesting from our time with Tom. Its moments like these that are the most satisfying to me from the experiences of the OUTREACH. To be able to transcend back to being a kid looking at slides and imagining the moments in the light. Tom’s house is a museum from a life well-lived and when he invited us in I couldn’t wipe the smile from my face. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.
