i don’t believe that we will get relegated as minority of the fanbase think but i do think we’re bound to struggle if no one else is signed to replace the outgoings mid-table minimum 🤞🏼

I still think TC is going to bring young PL loan players in.

Losing Hoedt would be a big blow. But I could understand it from his perspective wanting one last move and being unwilling to renew and from the club's perspective not wanting to let him run down his contract for one more year. So, unless one of those things changes, he will probably go. I would definitely be worried about the quality, depth and lack of leadership at centre back. To lose a left footed centre back is also an extra blow. We would need a decent experienced replacement.
If true, the Asprilla move is a must for the club. Absolutely cannot turn down that sort of money. Would be £10 million more than I thought we'd get so snap their hands off!
As for the squad, I think you're right to be concerned about depth in the long term as the club has been shedding assets to stay afloat. The amount of player sales that we are having to make in order to barely balance the books is ludicrous.
In the short term, I still believe Gino wants to give Cleverley a chance to succeed and keep us out of trouble. There has been lots of talk about being clever and utilising the loan market so I don't think we need to panic just yet. Obviously the club is trying to sell first and generate funds before deciding what can be reinvested. At the same time, we have already made a couple of savvy signings that haven't cost us anything up front. Let's wait and see where the chips fall.
I also think depth is overrated. We have clearly decided some of the back up options this season will be some of the youth players. That's fine by me. Val's idea of keeping a small, fit and motivated squad is a good one. No point in paying people to sit around. I'd say you could get away with less than 2 first team players for every position with some youth players to fill out the numbers as long as you have some midfielders and defenders that can cover a couple of roles.

I still vividly remember the first home game after Covid (leicester). The Leicester team took the pitch and the Watford team took an eternity to amble out in dribs and drabs looking as if it were the last thing in the world they wanted to do. The bad vibes for me started there.

There is no point in making predictions until we know exactly which players are in the building. The way TC is trying to get us to play we could be a surprise package

I would be absolutely gutted if Asprilla goes - I think regardless of if 25m or not, I still think we could get more at the end of next season, along with him another year in a squad which is still far lacking in overall quality. He's our Wunderkind, the ace up our sleeve, raw talent. I think he often struggles to make an impact, I've certainly seen him ghost in a few games, but sometimes he'll completely change the game. He can help us to 'do a Watford' with a late winner - he can beat a man or two and score a screamer on his day. When he's on the pitch I always think there's a chance in us. Contender for our MVP most of the time.
It's a personal one for me too, as I have a Colombian close to me in my life and Asprilla's been great for us to share our passion for the game - I've got a signed match-worn shirt framed on the wall and (perhaps stupidly) have already got this season's shirt with him on the back (actually, very stupidly). I love that we have such a young, talented player, it keeps me optimistic and positive supporting what is often quite a painful club to support.
So yeah, he's a keeper for me but if we get 20+ for him, I won't hold it against the club, and I can't hold it against Yasér as I ultimately want the best chance for him to reach the top. And to be honest, nobody can be blamed for leaving us in our current state, because even as a championship club with many recent seasons in the prem, it's somehow still not looking good for us. Let me know if you think I'm being too pessimistic.
Having said all that, Hurtado might just step in as our resident Colombian wonderkid, who knows hahah.
    COYH!

Then you'll enjoy this 10 minute vid of him from last season. Try not to be distracted by the amount of balls he puts into dangerous areas that go nowhere with Watford's (ahem) forward line. Watford's most creative player by a mile. czcams.com/video/NDmWzbOqjp4/video.html&ab_channel=BrazilScout

@@user-zk4gp9ij2l god it makes me sad to see all those wasted chances. I so hope we haven’t seen the last of him in a Watford shirt. 🙏

According to Andrew French on X, he has heard nothing concrete in regards to Hoedt or Asprilla!

I think it needs to be re-emphasised that the fees we are receiving for players, at one stage, would have be dreamland. Yet now, it feels like the proceeds are simply going straight into a black hole. It is absolutely mad and feels like a microcosm of broader economic trends. Concentration of wealth at the top in increasingly fewer hands, while the rest, even the next tier down, run out of road and have no ability to compete.
Whilst mistakes have been made, I think we lose sight of how difficult it is, even for a family like to Pozzos, to keep up, when you have billionaires from all over the globe buying British clubs and throwing money at them. Combine that with the precipitous fallout of relegation and all you need, for a club like Watford, is one bad season and you're on the ropes. My point being that our power in the game has declined relative to other clubs quite rapidly and significantly and it isn't all just the fault of Gino and the recruitment team.
