He was such a wonderful actor and so musically gifted, as well. I loved him in so many roles, but he will always be remembered as Captain Daniels to me! This film looks wonderful - I love Regina King and have a lot of time for John Ridley. It will be an honor to see Mr. Reddick one more time, in such great company, and teaching America about an incredible woman who doesn’t get the historical recognition that she deserves. Thank you all who were involved in this project, and RIP, Ms. Chisholm and Mr. Reddick. 🙏🏽

What does that mean when it comes to folks saying a public figure either politician athlete or musician is not talked about enough? First of all Shirley made national news all over the place when she ran for president. There are a ton of documentaries about her especially a big pbs doc about her campaign. Heck folks don't talk about sojourner Truth . Booker t and a whole bunch of them . U can't talk about everyone at once . I just think that is just goofy thinking

Shirley Chisholm was a fierce lady. Her story needs to live on.
We need more people like Shirley Chisholm.
She ran when Gary Indiana in 1972 had a National Black Platform Agenda. She was a way to get black people to focus on individual politicians BUT NOT HAVE BLACK PEOPLE IN AMERICA have a National Platform that wasn't funded by white campaign contributions like our black politicians are. Gary Indiana and the Black Panthers 10 point program were a way better path than Shirley Chisolm to economically help us.
In fact Martin Luther King 5 years earlier also had a Federal Government Platform in regards to Education, Housing and Employment. It is in the back of the book he wrote Where Do We Go From Here? Chaos Or Community? Barnes and Noble Bookstore sells it. Some libraries have it. In other words Shirley Chisolm was a way watered down black political movement. She didn't want to get killed like Martin Luther King and the Black Panthers.

@@tosheatower Boy, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, she was awarded numerous honorary degrees, she's in the Nat'l Women's Hall of Fame, she is honored on a USA postage stamp, she has a state park named after her in NY state, she was a member of the NY state assembly, etc etc. Shirley cared for the poor and downtrodden. She's a saint.

I’m so glad they’re finally telling her story!! So many people don’t know about her, and it’s about time they do!!
There’s a really great Shirley Chisholm centric episode in the 2020 miniseries Mrs America. The third episode focuses on her presidential bid, and Uzo Aduba won the Emmy for her performance as Shirley.
If you haven’t seen it, would highly recommend the whole series (primarily focusing on Phylis Schlafly and her crossings with women such as Shirley, Gloria Steinem, etc), but the third episode could technically be watched on it’s own for the Shirley story.
But I agree with you here, hopefully this film brings her story to a wider audience, as I was actually wholly unaware of her until the Schlafly miniseries.

I'm so excited about this! Shirley Chisholm is one of my sheros. She is such a trailblazer and real inspiration. If you have not seen the documentary about her running for president called "Unbought and Unbossed," I highly encourage you to watch that in addition to this film.

I was 12 years old in 1972 and I remember that election very well with the Republican President Richard Nixon winning in a landslide over Democratic nominee George McGovern.
However, it seemed to me that those two major candidates had to share the headlines with Shirley Chisholm and George Wallace, who were at the polar opposite ends of the political spectrum. Wallace was a segregationist from Alabama, and Chisholm was a liberal supporter of minority civil rights and women's rights from Brooklyn, New York. They seemed to spark more political debate and general buzz at the that time than the two major candidates.
Wallace's campaign effectively ended when he was shot on May 15, 1972 in Maryland by Arthur Bremer, and Wallace remained paralyzed below the waist for the rest of his life. Following the assassination attempt, Shirley Chisholm visited Wallace at the hospital. Despite their ideological differences and the opposition of Chisholm's constituents, Chisholm felt visiting Wallace was the humane thing to do.
In the late 1970s, Wallace announced that he became a born-again Christian, and moderated his views on race, renouncing his past support for segregation.
I want to say how I am still praying for her, and I am so happy that she has returned to do a movie.
We need to be reminded of this great woman, especially with everything going on with politics today. Beautiful to see Regina in another project.

@@adey126, Netflix was blocked form releasing movies in theaters (so far recently, only the Bayard Rustin bio-pic has been released in theater, IIRC) so it's not the company's fault about this; get pissy with the other film studio for doing this. Besides, the film's good on its own for King to win an Emmy for her performance.
They are already showing in theaters in some places!

Shirley Chisholm came to speak at my college in the 90's.
I was just a little white girl who got to hear her speak in person during her campaign, but I couldn't help but be moved by her incredible life force. A very special person and I hope this movie honors her.
Can't wait for this! A story that needs to be told and I'm so glad to see Regina back on the screen!
