It’s funny, because it starts off as a pretty light episodic show… or so it seems.
And then stuff moves in the depths…
Lapis lazuli is a blue silicate mineral in the sodalite group. It contains a blend of sodium, calcium, silica, and aluminum, plus sulfur atoms. In real life she's not a water gem like pearls and corals.
I know this is a little late but these episodes is when Steven’s voice gets to how it is in the rest of the series(Besides Future of course). If you go back to the previous episodes you will notice that he sounds way different
Lapis Lazuli has one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful story lines. She's one of my fav characters
Agreed. I like how she mirrored the crystal gems with water; it's themed well after her character since the mirror played a major part in her life, and so she was still mirroring what she saw.

I used to not like her, but I think it's because I didn't really understand just how much past events had affected her. Once I rewatched the show once I was a tad older and more prone to analyzing things I started liking her a lot
These episodes were the tipping point where everyone realized there was something far darker and bigger about this show than just Magic Fun Adventures for Kids™.

Honestly, this show is so full of great characters it’s hard to pick one. Lapis Lazuli is definitely a gem!

The way the gems form their bodies is always soooooo cool to watch! Especially in slow motion

You guys are really going to like the rest of this series. There is so much foreshadowing that at the end of every episode you can't help but want more.
Not just at the end, all through each episode there are foreshadowing phrases and backgrounds. Howdy, I hate fighting myself. (And these aren't even spoilers, because the way they manifest later is just so unpredictable)

Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem are the mid-season one finales stories, but they were also to serve as the series finale in case SU was cancelled abruptly in the middle of its first season...a distinct possibility considering the show's slow world building and lack of stand-alone episodes.
Before these episodes, SU kind of flew under the radar, with most of its fanbase coming from Adventure Time fans who were curious about a series created by Rebecca Sugar, who had been a major contributor to Pendleton Ward's series. After Mirror Gem/Ocean Gem word started to get around to encourage others to get into SU, with a big explosion of interest after the season one finale.
So now we know that the bubbled gemstones within the Crystal Temple, and the monsters still at large outside of it, were once sapient Gem beings like Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl and Rose Quartz. You might recall how when Centipeetle was accidentally released she briefly formed a normal humanoid shape. More lore a'comin'!

Exactly I was around 10 when this show had came out. I’m about to be 21, crazy how fast time passed. I thought this show was weird and would skip the channel when this show came on. I remember not being able to find anything good to watch and there’s been times I would watch a couple of SU episodes. Mirror gem, and Ocean gem is what really made me start liking this show. Crazy since I became one of the biggest fan of this show since.
The face the gems make when they realize Lapis is sentient and they've been committing war crimes against her for eons is genuinely horrifying.
And these are characters we're undeniably supposed to like, too. The moral complexity of Steven Universe is amazing.

Lapis Lazuli is my favorite character. She's the one that inspired my IGN and usernames "Lapiz". She's such a complex character and I think the show could've utilized her so much more.

Episode 25 is when things start to kick off. It's when the writers stopped getting you used to the rules and setting the groundwork and started actually building towards something.

Yeah! Just like this one, this show has many subtle callbacks and foreshadowing! Like the murals of gem built places revealing characters from the last arc or pearl covering her mouth with her hands when unable to answer about certain topics…

I love the show so much but I've only watched it in full once so it's really fun to watch it here and notice all the foreshadowing! These two episodes really were where the world started growing... bigger. Well, much bigger than before.
I have so much to say, but also so little because spoilers spoilers spoilers.
I'll contain my excitement. But man, these two episodes are amazing. Finding out the monsters are also gems, that there are more gems (besides pearl, garnet, amethyst and rose), that Lapis' home is not on earth? AAAAhhh good stuff

Buckle up because Steven Universe is the longest of long games when it comes to the main arc
Ohhh the universe just got a whole lot bigger - pun intended. Experiencing this story again through you guys is so exciting. Such a fantastic show.
This show is just about to get so so good. I really hope ya’ll stay away from spoilers. The season finale is top tier.

i love that this is like the midpoint of season 1
like season 1 is as long as two seasons,
the first half starts everything off, setting in main setting, characters, the verry basics of gems (being made off light, what happens when they poof, their ability to fuse, their constant missions for dangerous artifacts or hunting monsters),
then these two episodes kick off the connecting of dots
from here on this season all the clues and information proided so far starts being meshed with new facts about gems and earth and such, as we kind of connect everything like a detective's yarn and cork bored. and thats not to say there arnt MORE mysteries past this season just this season takes a very fulfilling long brought to fully set everything into place so the next 4 seasons can be more story oriented and episodic (not that filler and random hijink episodes stop)

30% spoiler-y opinion:
in hindsight i get why the chrystal gems were scared that there was a living gem in the mirror
but to this day it doesnt feel like they ever fully justified their reasonings fohow they react when they realize theirs a conscious gem trapped in the mirror, although we learn from context later in grander schemes.
like its the one thing I've never fully forgiven, them being unwilling to give the mirror gem a chance. like for all they knew it was another like minded gem when it was trapped. they knew they didnt trap her in it!
