I think he’s just come from the dentist where he has had a tooth extracted with the injections still to wear off. At one point he even says like a tooth survivor. What I can’t explain though is that he is clearly still sitting not standing. Irony?
I turned captions on on my phone to see what Google could translate. I got a lot of (music) and a random word here and there. It understood as much as I did.
The real reason is probably a fewfold, and not to do with Elton's competency: 1. Elton is notorious for having his piano and vocals in his foldback speakers playing back at him extremely loud. The "response" from the piano in this normal live situation is very different to the set up he has in his back garden, which it seems he had to play much quieter, and without the normal sound crew that he is used to - you can hear that this is causing him to not get the same 'feel' from the response of his piano, which is causing the timing to be off with his playing. 2. In this "outdoor" set up, his vocals are very very 'dry' without any reverb, and again this is all going to affect the performance Elton is used to a particular set up and a particular 'oompf' to his performance. Although he has a decent piece of kit outside, it's akin to trying to play a rock ballad on a basic "casio" Keyboard, from the 'player's' point of view. All of that is going to impact the player's "flow" and will put him off - the things he doesn't normally think about and come naturally will suddenly feel wooden and unnatural. Finally, we need to give him a break; this was a charity piece to say thank you to the NHS. It is also a recorded piece in the middle of the pandemic with much fewer resources than he'd normally have, and when it's recorded with little production, the end result is very unforgiving. Those are my thoughts on the matter, My credentials; 15 years of experience in the music industry A pianist myself I know some of the sound engineers that provide sound for Elton - so understand his sound set up fairly well.

Unlike alot of others clearly, i actually liked this version, yeah it isn’t perfect but it’s just him and his piano, something I loved. I think a large part of the shoddiness most people attribute to this performance is he’s having to create his own energy, not relying on the crowd to get him excited or the band to keep him in time.
