I think the reason why they show animals so much is that a)whatever has happened is only affecting humans. And b)to also show that Theo is trustful.

Incredible. On another level. When I watch this movie, I believe it, I am in it. Amazing filming, so grounded, real shocking and surprising what you can end up craving in a dark depressing world with these actors and writing to accompany it. 10/10.
This movie is in fact based on a novel written by Philis James in 1992.
Here is the wildest plot twist: Alfonso Cuarón never read the book. And he STILL pulled off this unsung masterpiece of early 21st century cinema. Try and top that, current age of movies!
Great job, man. One of the best movies ever made and barely anyone reacts to it, and a lot of those who do aren't very engaged; you were into it the whole way. Appreciate that!
Animals love Theo because they can sense good and evil in people (sort of a natural sixth sense thing). It’s why I like that the farmer mentions they like him but not anyone else there…
This is a movie where the details reveal the mindset of a society that has nothing to live for. It is so well done.

the scene where theo leaves the corridor by pushing the door makes him lose his right flip-flop, he no longer has it and it bothers him a lot, that's why he cuts his foot. He doesn't have time to get it back...

I like how you make jokes about the "2006" CGI baby, when it looks better than any CGI in any modern Marvel movie, hands down
The one takes have a different purpose in this film. The scene Where Juliane Moore gets killed was one long shot. You see them driving down the road and a burning car blocks them. Men with guns start coming down the hill and firing. They go in reverse and they are hit by fire, which catches their car on fire… Nearly everything in that sequence was CGI. They had a couple of actor actually rim down the hill. Then the were digitally made so they could multiply the amount of men running at different tempos, and no one ever knew. When the car catches on fire, CGI. The acting had to on point, which it was but it was way more of a simple shot that what all you saw. Same thing with the shooting in the city at the end. It is a masterpiece when you look at all of the special effects, sound and sound editing.
33:52 - well, if you got to be shot, best place is next to a boat filled with best scientists and doctors in the world. He probably passed out, but I think he has a decent chance of surviving. Stomach wounds usually don't kill immediately.
True, but remember that Theo was shot about 15-20 minutes earlier, and since then he's been moving around and exerting himself a ton - which means he's been losing blood that whole time, and the only thing keeping him going was the adrenaline of the situation. Once they're out on the water, the adrenaline finally wears off, and all that blood loss takes its toll. If he'd been lying still ever since he was shot then maybe he'd survive, but I'm not too optimistic about his chances given the circumstances. 😢
@@dlweiss Yeah, he's been in that boat, rowing, for at least 15 minutes already. They covered a lot of distance, when the planes fly overhead to bomb the refugees it's way in the distance, and a row boat is super slow. And he was shot way before they even got to the boat, so he's been bleeding out for a long time.
Plus, story wise, it makes more sense for him to die. He starts the story with no motivation, he is hopeless, he is thinking about killing himself even, he's clearly not interested in anything at all, not his work, not activism, he's basically apathetic, but Kee and her baby give him hope for the future again, and that hope makes him help her. Shakes him out of his apathy and makes him exert himself. And once he and Kee have reached their goal, he's done everything he can to help her, Kee reveals Dylan's name and Theo feels satisfied.

10 years ago this movie's set up with infertility was a nightmare. Easy to imagine. Today, when scientists can make sperm and eggs from adult cells (mice so far) - it's a problem, but not a disaster.
I had assumed the problem wasn't with creating viable embryos, but the ability to carry pregnancies to term, hence all the miscarriages Miriam spoke about.
Really liked how simple yet frightening this movie is. The idea of all females becoming infertile worldwide would really cause such panic and pandemonium everywhere. Good choice. Good reaction as always.
Handmaids Tale did a really good and terrifying version of this too

It's framed as creepy in both the book and the show, but the doctor June visits tells her he can impregnate her, because the commander is probably sterile.
June isn't sure if he's actually being kind and trying to help, or taking advantage of his position, or both, or even if he's laying a trap. But he's probably not lying about the guys being infertile too. It's unlikely that lowering birthrates are only because women became infertile, they say the cause is pollution, which, if it affects women, it affects men too.
But the book has a framing device the show does not, a lecturer in the future talking about the history of Gilead. She is a woman, talking about June's (well, only Offred in the book, her actual name is never confirmed) diary, and her research is kind of dismissed by a male professor who talks about women exaggerating. That framing device makes it clear that not only is Gilead gone, but the infertility is also fixed, or if not fixed at least not a problem on the same scale as before. (though sexism and dismissing women as hysterical hasn't disappeared) Gilead wasn't the solution, the solution came from scientific discoveries in other countries. Basically, Gilead used the infertility as an excuse to subjugate women, and ignored the actual science in favour of establishing a dictatorship.
The show outright says that Gilead is successful in fixing the birthrate through government mandated grape.
I would argue that they contradict the book there 😁
