  • This Chevelle is now the earliest “known” 1970 Chevelle SS built at the Atlanta, Georgia assembly plant to surface to date. The 825th unit at the Lakewood assembly plant 1970 model production run was hiding for years in Tennessee. The car was purchased new in Tullahoma, TN and relocated to Michigan for few years before coming back to TN to hide.

I have a 70 chevelle sports coupe done the same way. Early model with the chrome under the head lights etc..it’s a Canadian built car. Living in upstate New York it’s a true survivor. Love seeing the real SS cars knowing that’s what mine was cloned from. Real SS or not I smile everyday I look in the garage 👍 thanks Patrick

Too many people use the term"restored" in the wrong way."Refurbished" or "re-habed" is more like it. Like Patrick says,we need to embrace the flaws that an original car presents...There are fewer left every day.

My question here is, I know I've heard this several times before, but with this being such an early production car, is the motor an actual 396? By that I mean not the actual 402 that most 70-72 SS 396 cars, being .30 over bored 396 blocks.

FYI I have a build sheet for a SS396 built before this one, a red/black car with the VIN ending in 664.

This is the earliest car to surface, there were earlier built, most of them are recycled. You should do some investigating to see if the car to your build sheet still exists. That would be a cool investigation, it would make your build sheet pretty valuable to the owner of that car. Maybe even try and DM Patrick, he could and would probably help ya or let ya know if he comes across it. I don't think to many people in the business come across more Chevelle's than him.

    Hey Patrick,
Really enjoying your videos. Your information is priceless! I have a question; Do you know why some of the '70 Chevelle driver's doors have the bars above and below the Blue Safety Standard VIN Decal and some don't?

Gary Cunningham from my photo records it appears all the early cars had the bars but the later versions did not. Not exactly sure if that’s concrete but looking like that’s the case. I’ll check out more cars and see.

Thanks so much Patrick! One last question; Did any of the '70 Chevelles come with the non-square cut windshield washer reservoir? Or did all have the square cut? Thanks again!

Hello Patrick, I was wondering if you plan on restoring the orange 70 you purchased to as close to original as possible. Btw another great find and video

Most of the replacement items to restore are better than original. Who really cares where the seams are in a vinyl top. The quality of the restoration work is the most important thing.
