I'm so glad Mr. Friedkin has done so many of these kinds of discussions. Not only is he a gifted filmmaker, but also is a passionate film historian who inspires and engages his listeners.
William was a genius directing The Exorcist-hearing him here reaffirms that
One of my all time favorite directors, with a bunch of great films under his belt.
CRUISING
He followed me on Twitter. He did so because he liked what I had to say about film, and that I had "interesting" other things to say, as well.
What a great, charismatic personality Mr.Friedkin has!
Friedkin is absolutely right about that situation with the original movie poster idea and I'd hope some modern filmmakers would understand why we should return to this. Keep the marketing, trailers, basically the superficial surface level optics of a film subtle. Nuance and understatement is so much more effective in promotion. Back then, if you're aware that a bloody crucifix is a key element in the film you're about to see then you're gonna be expecting that moment and waiting for it, completely taking all its weight & symbolic power way from it.
I could hear this guy tell anecdotes/stories all day long.
One of our Great american Directors! Bill Friedkin remains awesome!
I love William Friedkin, a directing genius but a wholly engaging speaker, I have seen many interviews like this one he has hosted, his knowledge of film, and his passion are unmatched. I love the way he talks about his masterpiece "The Exorcist" I think he knows the power of what he had created, and to this day, he speaks about it like a mother speaks of her child, but "The Exorcist" wasn't the only great movie he directed, "The French Connection" was another masterpiece. There are few like him today.
Don't forget SORCERER. An underrated masterpiece that surpassed the original film.
that movie scared the hell out me! still to this day it does
love fridkin
This guy could do standup, I found myself laughing my ass off
It took getting a little older and wiser to appreciate The Exorcist. It’s not just terrifying, it’s also a brilliant piece of filmmaking. Friedkin was able to walk a fine line that precious few directors can manage. This film could have been so easily screwed up, even by a great director. The horrific imagery almost begged to be exploitative, but it wasn’t. To me that’s engine that drives the Exorcist. We accept what we are seeing because this is an honest film that deals with the subject in a very matter of fact way. It’s an uncompromising depiction of evil incarnate. It’s repulsive, it’s depraved, and it’s obscene.
We'll never see his like again R.I.P to a true legend. Thank goodness so many of his ancedotes were recorded for posterity.
I watched this in Palace cinema , Karachi 43 years ago. I was a medical student then and the chill and horror of this film never left me. What makes this film apart from other horror films is the fact that horror was not enforced on viewers but just crept slowly and intensified and I bet everyone felt that they were not watching a movie but something pretty real. The film start in the excavated ruins of Northern Iraq also played a part in rooting this intense film to reality and believable and so scary.
Bill Friedkin is a genius!
Why isn't that place full? Man's a legend
it is still one of the scariest movies of all time!!!!! Esp knowing it was based on a case from my city!
That part of Silver Spring, Maryland then in 1949 is NOW in nearby Hyattsville...thats where I live....yikes.
William Friedkin deserves greater recognition - as a superb director - whose movies have not dated - and do reflect the very best in American cinema. His finest works - Sorcerer and Cruising were panned by the critics - but have proved to be masterpieces - the equal of Kubrick. To Live and Die in LA is. magnificent action movie - of non stop brilliance. He is the antidote to the rubbish produced by Hollywood today - yet many of his wonderful movies were made - with little recognition - nearly half a century ago.
This guy was a fkn genuis when it came to getting the best out of his actor's.
You meant to say "friedkin genius" right? ;-)
With all of the personal sacrifice and suffering that Mercedes McCambridge endured in performing her role, I'm surprised that nobody mentioned the fact that she was initially uncredited for her role, with Friedkin claiming that it would 'take away' from Blair's performance. She had to literally put up a fight to finally get credited.
That being said, there is some truth to the fact that Mercedes would have taken away some of the glory from Blair. There is a video (which you can easily find on CZcams) that shows the demonic possession scene where Blair is saying the lines in her own voice. I'd suggest checking that out!
Love this dude
The music was scarier than the movie
I remember wen this movie came out,we went to the drive in,remeber those???to watch it,me my freind and his gal,at one point during the movie they left the station wagon to go to the bathroom, they were gone for well over 20 minutes,I sat there watching and exp;erienced the most frightening movie I have ever seen,it truly scared the living shit out of me,have seen alot of horror movies, not a big fan but i wil watch,an to this day NOTHING even comes close, and tubular bells had alot to do with the feelings generated in me.greatest soundtrack of all time..........
I finally saw TE just this week (1st time - Blu Ray - Extended Director's Cut:-) and loved it! I was IN Dallas when this occurred and heard about it; wish I had been there!
RIP SIR
Thank You for sharing this.
This is the only movie that ever freaked me out.
The exorcist and the exorcist 3 are two of the most disturbing movies ever.
Exorcist 3 is amazing , never got the kodos at the time it deserved .
So he used audio from an actual exorcism in the final scene? Creeeepy...
Haven't seen it in decades, just discovered it's streaming now on HBO Max and will expire end of this month, April 2021.
Book of Love does an excellent version of Tubular bells!!!!!!!
This movie could either scare the hell out of you or have you laughing hysterically.
joe jones I’d never trust somebody that laughs histerically at the exorcist
@@Insaniya.humanity If you ever saw Richard Pryor's comedy skit on the move, an SNL classic, you would understand why..
Or both
The people that laugh at it are heartless goofballs.
@@gregyear201 those people are usually the ones that were scared sh!less when they saw this movie for the first time
My favourite Friedkin is The French Connection. The Exorcist is also brilliantly made. Not sure I'd say I "enjoyed" it though, as I was deeply grossed out by it lol
He never recovered artistically from the commercial failure of Sorcerer.
👺The French Connection & The Exorcist are two best movies of all time👹
Could you conduct a 4 hour version of this please? Thank you.
Huh so original took place in DC area and they filmed in the DC area. Devils and politicians go hand in hand. The film has alot of deaths associated with they were filming. Heavy forces.
not many people ask about the Saint Louis Story! That is what the movie is based on!
dope
I have a question: what did you do with the money that the movie made? I read 146 millions of dollars?
The are in the begin Mike Olfield
