Hi, I'm from Germany and back in 2019 I made a road trip coming from SF, Highway 1 to LA, Joshua Tree, Grand Canyon, Page, Monument Valley, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce, Zion, Death Valley, Sequioa, Yosemite and back to SF. Since I own a Model 3 myself I thougt about if it would now be possible to make this road trip again with an Model 3, because there are no superchargers between Moab and St. George, where all this beatiful National Parks are located.
But since I made a road trip with my Model 3 SR in south eastern europe (Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Montenegro, Italy) I learned that are so many possibilities to charge, especially at the Balkans, completely for free. Only with 11 kW, but that's enough on a road trip, because after sightseeing the battery is full.
How is the situation in the US if you're in the middle of nowhere like in southern Utah?
That sounds like a fun trip. I did a very similar trip on my channel last year and visited most of the places you mentioned including Moab, Arches, Zion. No problem doing that with the Supercharger network here in the US now. I had no issues. Of course I always wish they had more, but Tesla seems to be adding new ones weekly and we should have the release of the CCS adapter from Tesla soon so we can then also charge on the Electrify America charging network.

Wow, what a difference a year makes. When I used the Cedar City supercharger back in July 2022, it was a 16 stall V3 setup. I guess those urban ones you used in this video was a temporary solution until they got the V3's in there.

For Angel's landing, spend the money and stay at the lodge, it's close to the trail. Be on the trail early like 4am to beat the busses. You will be the only ones there and get to watch the sunrise at the top. The tail is a nightmare with lots of people on it because there is no way to pass people coming the other way is too narrow near the top. One of the best experiences in life.

Angels Landing is a bit sketchy, its a technical scramble in places and for the views/ accomplishment its up there as one of my favorites 😃
Yep, I think Zion was my favorite last season. I do plan to go back in the next couple months and am nervous about Angels Landing, but my mind is set and just want to do it for myself. I'm not a huge fan of heights so it should be interesting 😀

I had looked up your hike, and it does say easy, I'm surprised! We went to Zion (on my channel) and tried hiking the watchmen trail, it was too hot at 95deg outside! No way we made it too far, worth the photos and videos!! We went last summer, it was amazing, Zion has a special place in my heart, I will be back for sure. I've heard that Angles Landing after summer 2021 requires a reservation. Too Dangerous. Just an FYI 😉
After Zion we drove thru Vegas (didn't stay was too hot 104deg) and the Grand Canyon in my 40kw Nissan Leaf!! YEAH, I said Nissan Leaf LOL

Yep that one was a pretty easy one. There were a few spots that were a bit harder or routes that were, but most people in decent shape could make it through and back. It's quite short. I am planning to do Angels Landing in a couple months and yes you now have to have a reservation. A fellow CZcamsr who does truck camping knows a guide there that is planning to take us. And this is why the Cybertruck (and hopefully a Cybersuv as well!) needs to arrive ASAP. All the tech of a Tesla in a package that’s ready to go off-road.
100% Dylan! I actually just put my order in yesterday for the Cybertruck & see Elon said today they'll be doing a quad motor now for independent motors on each wheel along with "crab walk" ability. Should be a beast for off-roading. I know I'm way down the ladder when it comes to orders as I waited so long, but imagine half of those or more ahead of me won't take delivery for whatever reason so hope for delivery in the next year or so.
@@bryanhauer nice! I reserved mine on 12/7 last year. Hoping to have it by the end of 2022 but realistically it could be the end of 2024! Who knows. Upside… my 2008 Lexus GX 470 will have no issue running for as many years as needed until it arrives :)

You know it’s funny, just like Cedar city, I noticed Mojave, CA is installing some urban chargers like that over rock and strange design where you can use all of them. They are along side some normal chargers as well.
If you could update us with your charging issue that would be great! Wonder if it was the chargers at that location or the vehicle itself.
It was definitely the chargers having some type of issue at St George. Haven’t had any issues since and drove clear across the country. Plus others at that charger we’re having issues as well.
I really wish Tesla would rethink their Supercharger layout. One thing has stations got right is the design. It’s covered, easy to access on both sides which can provide more chargers and works better if you’re towing. I see in Europe they have a better layout than here in the US.

You'll need to charge at Cedar City or St George which are about 45 minutes to an hour outside the park on I15. You'll need to keep an eye on your % to make sure every 2-3 days you can get back there to charge up. Alternatively you could look for a campground near the park with electrical hookups although I prefer dispersed camping (no hookups). You'll need an adapter for this so make sure to check out my How to Charge at a Campground video: czcams.com/video/V4V-Ji1bzw0/video.html
That is a weird design of the chargers in the beginning, no? Shouldnt the chargers be rotated by 90 degrees ? Nice video again , mate. Absolutely beautiful scenery
It's a weird one for sure. The back ones aren't even in service. I have no idea why they did them like that. That Supercharger has always been weird. One time the entire thing was open and you could see the inside of the charger. It was like someone was working on it and just left. It's also terribly slow, but unfortunately there's only a couple options in that area.

Love watching your adventures! Planning on doing my first car camping trip next month and have learned a lot from your videos. Picked up a few items you suggested and the list keeps getting longer.
Not sure if you mentioned it on one of your other videos. Do you have a contingency plan for a flat tire? I know Tesla has roadside service. Most newer vehicles do not have spares and come with a compressor/patch kit. But, Tesla left that part to us.
I originally ordered the Tesla compressor kit. Waited about a month to receive a notification that they no longer carry that item and will credit my account. Currently have a small compressor I ordered from Amazon. But, that’s about it. I’ve read to stay away from the slime flat repair kits. Thanks in advance!

I did purchase the compressor/tire sealant kit when I first bought my Model Y and have had to use it once. It worked great!
I also purchased a AAA Premier Membership for $130/annually as a backup if the tire repair kit or Tesla roadside is farther than 50 miles away from where I'm at as they'll tow a car 200 miles and I think 2 or 3 other times up to 100 miles. I've heard horror stories about people getting hit with $2000 towing bills and I knew I'd be in some remote places camping so figured $130 was a small price to pay for that. Plus it goes with the person, not the car so if I'm with a friend in their car and they have car problems, I can use my membership if needed for a tow or a jump etc...

What size Bodega refrigerator is that? You have some sort of styrofoam padding of some sort to protect the dashboard. Is that something you made or something you bought? It's hard to tell from the video what that is.

The part on the dashboard is just a keyholder for the Tesla key cards that I use with a clamp to protect the dash and use as a tripod for cameras or my phone.

Bryan, what roof rack and roof storage brands are you using (I didn’t see them in your Gear list) and how much do they impact your battery?
I'm using the official Tesla roof rack you can find on their accessory store and then I'm using the Yakima Grand Tour 16. Hope that helps!
As for the range loss... I've discussed that in quite a few videos, but it's around 25% on long stretches. While a lot, I wouldn't be able to do what I'm doing without it so I put up with the extra Supercharger stop or two on travel days. I have seen others get a rear cargo box where there is almost no range loss, but I was always afraid to block the camera's/sensors as Autopilot uses those.

Nice video planned to take a trip to zion but my Model Y ALL WHEEL DRIVE 279 battery range kept telling me I won't make it? Came from orange county California to Vegas to skywalk next was zion but then my car was telling me no chargers point to finish the trip?
You'd be fine. From Vegas you have Mesquite and then up into Utah you have St George and a bit farther, Cedar City. St George and Cedar City Superchargers are just outside Zion so no issues. You'll have to go back to one of those every couple days to charge up unless you find a campground with 30A or 50A hookups (you'll need an adapter).

Thanks Tom - I've heard you can email supercharger@teslamotors.com but not sure how often that is checked. There's also a number on many of the Superchargers although I've heard of long wait times. I wish there was an easy way in the app. Hopefully that is coming soon. If a charger isn't working you should always wrap the cord around the top part so others don't waste time pulling in. I believe this might also notify Tesla there is a problem when it's not hung up like it normally is when not in use. Thanks for watching!
Tesla says they can tell remotely if a charger is not working. The in-car nav lists the available stalls when you select a supercharger on the map so that usually excludes stalls that aren't working.

What do you do for tire repairs?
I have the Tesla tire sealant and air compressor. If that doesn’t work I have a AAA Premier membership that includes a 200 mile tow and three 100 mile tows.
How much mileage you are getting with roof box? I am planning to buy one for my MY
My Model Y is rated for 326 miles per charge, but I normally got around 300. With the rooftop cargo box I lost about 25% and sometimes a bit more per full charge. I loved having the box for the time that I used it as I was able to fit all my camping gear in there, but I did get annoyed with the range loss and the wind noise (although that isn't too bad). I recently got the Yakima EXO Gearlocker & Swingbase which is a rear hitch mounted cargo box and it's much better. I'll be doing a review of that shortly as I'm currently out traveling with it. That one only loses about 5% if that and there's zero wind noise. It's a bit smaller, but I'm really enjoying it a lot more. If you're interested in my old rooftop Yakima I'd be willing to sell it for next to nothing. Depending on where you live and if you care there's some cosmetic issue with it, I'd be willing to give you a great deal. Let me know. I appreciate you watching 😀
Everytime I watch your videos I can’t wait to get my Tesla and take it to a solo road trip! Just curious , if none of the chargers work then what would you do ? Call roadside assistance ? I am learning what to do in case of emergency lol 😂
Hi Lisa - If none of them worked and I still had a small % left, I'd look at the PlugShare app to see what other types of chargers are in the area that are J1772 (Tesla gives you this adapter with the car or even campgrounds with 30amp or 50 amp hookups) and go there. It would be slower than a Supercharger, but would give you time to plan your next move. The chances of all of them not working hasn't happened to me yet and doubt it would, but you never know.
If that failed, my next step would be to contact Tesla roadside assistance within the app. Tell them all the chargers are down and you're stuck. They'd most likely figure something out with their Mobile Service team or call you a tow truck free of charge (if it was their fault) to get you to somewhere with a charger.
If that failed, I did purchase a a Premier Membership with AAA for $130/year which allows for one tow of 200 miles per year (Tesla's roadside only provides up to 50 miles generally, but I knew I'd be in remote areas) and up to 3 or 4 after that up to 100 miles. Cool thing about the AAA package is it follows you, not the vehicle so if you're with a friend in their vehicle and you get stuck, AAA will still come out as part of your service.

@@bryanhauer I saw recently that some of the AAA trucks have EV chargers on them - not sure how fast or how much total charge they are are capable of but I think that will be more widely available in the future as we all buy EVs. At least I hope so!

Did you figure out what caused the charging scare?
It was a bad charger. I got back to Vegas and charged with no issues going forward. It's rare, but occasionally they have technical issues. Tesla seems to be pretty good about fixing those quickly.
Did you find out if something was wrong with your car, or was it a problem with the chargers?
Hey Søren - It was the chargers. Charging worked fine at every Supercharger since and there were others having an issue as well at that St George, UT one. Tesla was aware of the issue so hopefully they fixed it quickly. Check the other comments as well as there were some questions about what I would have done if it wouldn't have worked etc that might be of value to you...
How do you know where a BLM space is? Are they labeled somehow?
I usually just use Campendium and look for free spots by tapping the Public land filter. You can also cross reference that with the maps on BLM.gov.
@@bryanhauer Sorry for being dense about this - I can see the free camping on Campedium and the map of the area/roads but are the spots you can camp labeled or do you just stop wherever you want?
Usually they have a fire pit and in the case of the place I camped at in Zion it said on Campendium to only camp at designated spots. Not labeled or numbered per se, but it’s clear it’s a camping site. Some other places have been wide open and you just find a spot. I always read the listing and reviews on Campendium and usually the info is there. Hope that helps!
Great video ! do you know roughly how much battery percentage is used up on about 8 hours sleep with heaters turned on ?
Thanks 😀 Typically it's a little less than 1% per hour so in 8 hours of sleep you should expect to use around 7% battery. Same goes for using the AC on hot days/nights during the summer. Hope that helps!
@@bryanhauer Thanks ! 1% per hour is very reasonable. I am considering getting a model Y and I had never thought of using this as an adventure / camping vehicle.. This just opens up a whole new world of possibilities !!!
@@srinyacharya It's honestly great for that. You'll see in a handful of my videos that it's capable of mild off-roading (bumpy dirt roads) and having the ability to just set the temp to whatever you want, is a game changer.
One tip I would suggest is find campgrounds that have 30amp or 50amp hookups or areas that are within a 45 minute drive of a Supercharger. For instance in this video I was about 45 minutes away. In my Moab camping video I was about 15 minutes away. On Mt Charleston I'm about 35 minutes away. Then every 2-3 days you can run into town, charge up and grab lunch. Works out well! You can then run it down to around 20% and go charge up.
For serious off-roading and going days and days on a single charge, we'll have to wait for the Cybertruck which won't start shipping to sometime next year. Till then the Model Y is great for camping. I also keep a fridge/freezer in mine going 24/7. I'll actually be releasing a new video in the next couple days looking at the changes I've made for my upcoming Season 2 of camping so make sure to check that out. I'll go through all my gear.

@@srinyacharya Same. Put my order in beginning of December so don't expect it for a while. I do plan to eventually configure it for the top specs and usually those orders will go first since that's what they'll manufacture first. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻
Did you PPF or ceramic your Y? Custom tint?
I didn't do PPF or ceramic and quite honestly didn't think it was worth the cost, but after driving 20k miles in 6 months and seeing how many bugs I've killed... I kind of regret at least not getting partial around the front and sides as I've heard it's easier to remove bugs and debris. I will probably get partial in the early Spring before I head back out full-time on the road again.
As for tint... I did 30% ceramic tint on the front two side windows (back and roof were already factory tinted).

I love dogs and have had one. But I definitely do NOT need a dog with my lifestyle. It wouldn’t be fair to the dog. I’m on flights every few weeks and checking into hotels even more. I’m going to be building a lake home in the country starting this summer so plan to get one after I’m settled in there 😀 Again I’d love one, but not quite yet.
