    So many good memories of Cronulla from 69-74 before moving on. It was our big backyard for those years and
    serviced by train.
    My grandfather Rock Cafe was the railway foreman for building the Como bridge. They camped on site during the week and came back home to inner Sydney on the weekends.

    So many memories. Shopping in the main st before the mall went in, (where I became a really good reverse parker!) and endless trips to the beach. My mum was in the first year level through Cronulla primary and my grandfather ran a pharmacy in the main st from the 30s through till about the 60s I think. My roots run deep in Cronulla!

    Biggest change to Sydney since the early 20th century is ironically not the skyscrapers or the motorways but the greening of the city. There seems to have been a national war on trees back then, which has thankfully turned around.

    Wow! I had never heard of Cornulla until I found these videos. Beautiful place. It looked mystical back in the day and I found myself wishing that I had lived there. Does it still have the same vibe? I spent my wayward youth in Kansas and an ocean beach was between 900-1,500 miles away. Does anybody know the first song on the video, just before body and soul?

    • @ramdarook
      @ramdarook  Před 3 lety +2

      The first song is "Puberty Blues" also by Jenny Morris. There was a book & a movie entitled Puberty Blues written by 2 girls all about growing up in & around the Cronulla area. The Cronulla vibe is different now. There are a lot of coffee & surf clothing shops catering for visitors & definitely no where to park anymore. It's very crowded & busy. Still worth a visit though!

    I was just wondering if you had some photos of the carousel that I used to ride on at evening (after a day's swimming) when a much earlier version appeared at 2:38 in, complete with Helter Skelter! (which I've never seen in Australia). That was our only holiday spot from the late 1950's to the mid-1960's -- we used to catch the train from Westmead, and rent (initially) a good size house at the back of Shelley Beach, and down at the local milk bar was the first pin-ball machine I'd ever seen. I was hooked (and only 6 years old!). Used to snorkel in the ocean baths with my triangular-shaped face mask until my lips would go blue and mum would haul me out.

    I was born in Cronulla; my family lived there until we returned to England when I was 7 years old. Some of my earliest memories (circa 1966-68) are of living in an apartment block, quite near the beach, and visiting a milk bar below the building, on a street corner. My recollection of it is very much like the two images shown between 1:16 to 1:27. Any chance you know the name of the street or location of these photos? Looking at Google streetview I get the impression that Cronulla has - of course - changed beyond recognition since the 1960s. I guess all these buildings will have been replaced now. But anyway, I'd be really grateful if you have any more information on that. Thanks.

      Hi, thanks for message. The building you have mentioned in the video was called Miami Flats & was located on Gerrale St. opposite Cronulla Park & Beach, I think about #65 Gerrale st. The laneway next to the building is called Beach Park Av & leads to Cronulla Station & passes Munro Park. Hope this helps! All the best, Ross Myers p.s. Born in Cronulla would definitely make you a Shire person

      So, using Streetview, I've now been able to see the view towards the beach from Beach Park Ave. This pretty much confirms it for me. What's crazy is I went looking for photos of Cronulla in the 1960s - of which there aren't all that many to be found - and yet one of the few that there are actually captured a place (and moment in time) that's lived in my memory for 50 years. Thanks again for your help Ross.

      @@Titaniumparts I also have photos of that building & Gerrale st on my video entitled "A town called Cronulla". You can check these out from 3.15 to 3.30 taken by me in the early 70's, the photo with the restaurant downstairs was probably taken in the 80's. Ross

      That cleared area behind the parked car opposite the milk bar had for quite a while a carousel,
      before this photo was taken. Next to the carousel out of frame was a fish and chip shop, next to which was a fire station. The fisho burnt down (go figure) which I think led to the removal of the carousel which would almost certainly have been damaged

The Old Hotel had such a Great atmosphere , for me it was the late 1980's & 90's Sunday Nights. In the summer the Sharks Leagues Club would open The Summertime Bar , there was always Music. "Thank you for watching." -- my pleasure! What was that very nice acoustic guitar instrumental that you brought in at 7:00? Sounded like a cross between a slow version of Bron-y-aur Stomp and That's The Way (both from Led Zeppelin III). Also, when was the movie shot that starts at 8:10 in?
