  • I was lucky to get underneath these scarlet macaws perched in tree limbs on a side road of the Osa Peninsula. Unlike so many birds, they were not perturbed by my presence and did not fly away. These clips were the only bird footage I got with my best camera and long lenses. I was shooting a Canon 70D with a Nikon 200 to 500 mm lens connected through an adapter ring. After a half hour in direct sunlight, in the hot and humid afternoon heat, my camera met it's match, overheated and never could be turned back on afterwards. It forced me to really learn all the pro settings for video shooting on my Samsung Galaxy 23, so that turned out to be a sliver lining. I continued on for another 10 days in a wonderland of birds with a camera that was surprisingly good and indeed, at least very light and handy.
