As a long time gymnastics fan, I can honestly say that the sharpness, fluidity, and just overall execution is no where near where it was in the Karoli era, even comparing apples to apples (early season meets to early season meets). But, the mental and physical health of the gymnasts is visibly better. They look like they are actually enjoying gymnastics rather than terrified of being sexually abused or physically and mentally beat down for making mistakes. I’m much more comfortable watching them now, knowing they aren’t suffering. The execution will come. Great job ladies!
I was thinking the same thing. They are, obviously, strong/powerful but where is the artistry? I don't see an ounce of it.
Agree but artistry is something they would need to work on very early on, you can't teach that after a certain point.
Also a lot of the routine compositions don't help, same with some of the music on floor. It's not only that a lot lack sharpness and execution (which will come with more practice), it's the whole package that oftentimes sadly doesn't shine. And these are things that could be worked on, it's not like USAG doesn't have the means to help their gymnasts, don't understand why neither ASAC nor Chellsie give the coaches a hint, they should know how a good routine should be composed.
You can still find the artistry with some of the traditional European countries and it’s lovely to watch and if they don’t “win” it’s a win in my book.
the coaches say they are working on their athletes artistry but you see a bunch of loose legs, bent knees, slopy feet, like aren't the coaches point this out to the athletes and correcting them, the choreographies are inexistent and apparently those big clubs that ask tons of money for the training can't have a dance teacher to help the girls to dance better and put together better choreographies for the girls, so the reality is there is no effort being truly put in artistry they are just concern with putting on repetitions on the hard skills, because the ratio bad execution deduction vs hard skill D value is still worth it so why to care to execution that much, why to stress it on the athlete when you could be using the time to pack in more hard skills?
I agree. However it’s not worth hurting girls for medals. I just dont care for today’s gymnastics now. Zero artistry and boring. Just sloppy flop and tumbling. It’s not artistic gymnastics…it’s tumbling
The games will be awesome in 2024! I can’t wait to see Gabby Douglass again. Since she’s back in the gym, it would be cool if she competes again! All of the ladies kill it!😊👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾

It will be interesting to see which gymnasts continue to hone their skills to make it to the Olympics in Paris next summer.

Today’s uneven bar routines are all so similar. Look back to Nadia and Olga Korbut. Their routines were so creative and beautiful to watch. I wish the score of points would emphasize creativity, originality, and beauty.

@@rbrookeb it's not really that subjective. watching someone try super difficult moves and just jankily scrape thru many of them is quite easy to compare to someone delivering flawless lines, flow and rhythm.

They're talking a lot about artistry being a bigger deal this quad but I've got to admit, there's a ways to go. We've taken a step back in the last 5 or so years but look back at the US floor routines from the Rio Olympics...Simone, Aly, and Laurie were top-notch in artistry.
You could tell this was early in the season- super messy competition.
To put it mildly.....hopefully they'll get it together by worlds.

getting chosen for the worlds team, other random competitions that happen around the world (like the American Cup but in other countries), and eventually the olympics
I know it includes Jesolo and Pan American.
I think that at this stage of the year, it's for things like determining teams for the DTB Pokal Cup, which takes place in Stuttgart, Germany, and the City of Jesolo Trophy in Italy, plus maybe some assignments to the upcoming World Cups and World Challenge Cups. The US MAG sent a couple gymnasts to the Baku World Cup a couple weeks ago, but I don't know if US WAG intends to do the same for Cairo or the followup ones.

I understand that gymnastics is difficult but I didn't see the mental focus in some of these athletes. You have to keep your mind in it & turn on your star power. Very messy meet c'mon ladies!!!
What was Lexi’s UB score? NBC cut to final standings and outro.
Are Lexi Zeiss and Jade Carey (Oregon State, Corvallis, OR) related? They look alike to me, and both seem to be of the same sweet personality ilk, and certainly both are very talented gymnasts!

my god, these gymnast have got to start looking like they actually like their floor choreography. it’s like they just perform the skills rather than try to execute a solid FLUID routine. i can see why scores are always so low now as well, todays gymnast are nowhere near as clean as any of the past era gymnast. they HEAVILY bend their knees and don’t extend as they should. it’s all difficult skills and even then they don’t ever really get the full maximum potential score because they do the difficult skills with very poor execution.

I liked both Tim and Nastia, though I read negative comments about Tim. I found him entertaining and in many cases informative. Both provided technical information to understand the performances relative to each gymnast.
My first time seeing Katelyn Jong and see much potential in her floor routine. She has great music but needs a bit more punch and sharpness-actually working the music. She has the moves to make it a great routine IMO.

up until recently officials like karolyi and others were extremely strict on what they ate and fat shamed many healthy athletes so i'm assuming this has been cut down
This is what normal athletic women in competitive gymnastics look like when not being starved for an arbitrary aesthetic.
They’re finally not starved or overworked. So they’re allowed to mature, and are a little heavier and rounder. But now they look normal, like the college girls.

Katelyn Rosen’s floor routine shows the artistry many of us crave. Like her music, but like Katelyn Jong needs to hit the moves with more punch. Performance needs sharpening.
I think it's cute how these commenters still think we don't understand how the difficulty and execution scores work. It's like they don't get that we know we're not working with the perfect 10 scoring anymore 😆
I never look at them separate anyway, who cares if you get perfect execution if you're not doing anything worthwhile, and who cares if you do all the hard stuff but pull it off horribly. All that matters is the balance.
It's meant for viewers who may not usually watch gymnastic. Like the every four years Olympic fans.

And NCAA women’s gymnastics still use the 10.0 JO system, but the men use the FIG scoring.

What a disaster!!! The quality and look of the sport since I have left is hideous! And it keeps getting worse every year! I thought last year was awful but wow. No one is focus, awful form, choreo, dance ( they can't), presentation, awareness, etc. What a joke the sport is and no one here is even in shape for this sport, maybe football linebacker on half these but not gymnastics. It does not even feel like a competition as they seem like they are just shopping for clothes or desserts at the mall. Sad how far the sport has fallen into basically trash. Barely watchable really. Yikes
They should just have floor be like the mens.
Anyway, you and Mrs. Karoli would come out of retirement and help these gymnasts? They need you!! Hope all is well. Thank you for your many years of dedication. We all enjoyed them!!
