I very soon after realized that many of my friends, co-workers and family members were also no good for me; were keeping me stagnant let's say and were unappreciative or even resentful of me. Since I cut them out of my life or at least limited my contact with them and started spending more time with just myself, I have become so contented. It depends on how you spend your time alone. Doing sth you wanted to start doing or improving it, meditating or practicing introversion and observation for sure will be benefitial. But going aimlessly through the internet for hours, for consecutive days ('ve done that) is beyond detrimental. George Mutambuka fomo and comparing your life to what other people are doing is what happens naturally as you consume social media. it can be very emotionally draining if you aren’t aware of how it’s affecting you and altering your state of mind if say, you see a post of your friends at a party and didn’t invite you or if you’re unhappy w your life and you see others doing all the things you want to do and then jealousy followed by self loathing deepen the depression. One caught in this trap might only feel better by posting something themselves or forcing an activity just for the picture and the dopamine reaction that comes after people notice an awesome picture. It becomes an addiction to attention and especially those w a weak sense of self. It’s def not all bad but if you’re one of the more sensitive or emo types of people you gotta be aware of what things cause you to lower your vibe and either stay away from it altogether or limit your consumption. and then do other things in between that lift you back up. I actually feel sorry for the people that are constantly on certain apps trying to escape an unhappy existence or the self whores hunting 4 validation from people that mean nothing to them in their real every day lives.

Moved away from everything and everyone a bit over a year ago. Quit smoking and toxic substances like alcohol. Established a workout habit. Thought what hobbies or skills would be interesting AND beneficial to my life to learn, picked up a few and have practiced daily more or less. Sounds good right?
But the thing is - I am alone 24/7 , almost zero contact with others. Normally, I enjoy being alone, but being so all the time, makes me feel disconnected from the world. It all starts to become pointless. Even when I imagine for example accomplishing something HUGE that would help the world - without the other humans to share it with, it would become useless and have no meaning.
So I've learned from this experience that we need to interract with other people in meaningful ways to feel balanced and happy. Before moving, I kept telling myself that others are obstacle and I don't need anyone, all I want is to LEARN and grow. But heh....I feel like the intrinsic motivation to grow is because we want to grow TO have something useful to contribute and lift others up etc. Doing it for selfish reasons can only sustain you so long.

      @brandongrabowski5950 Před 3 lety +3

I think the point has been missed... the end goal is balance. It's not wrong to desire to interact with others sometimes. But to NEED it... to REQUIRE it in order to feel sane, whole, or validated in any way is not necessary nor is it healthy.
Many claim that it is good to talk to someone if you need it. This gets misinterpreted by using words that assign moral polarity to it. Instead of saying, "good", it should instead say, "nice, "pleasant", "enjoyable" etc...
Even if you feel restless, anxious, on edge... even mad when alone for too long, that's merely evidence that you are not well. And it's not a state of unwell that comes from being in solitude. It just becomes more noticeable because of the solitude. It was there before. It must be conquered. It's not fun. But the other side brings such peace and meaning... everything that's been eating at you finally makes sense... everything is understood. This is a psychotic break.

But a friend needed a hiking buddy for a South Rim backpacking trek and I accepted his offer. After hiking for three days in the Canyon, it came to me, with clearity and assured confidence. I was to become the massage therapist I wanted to be. Being alone much of the time in the Grand Canyon open my mind to such beauty and unimaginable "space" and true liberty that I knew working with others in a quiet, private setting was preferable to working in a sterile, white laboratory doing boring, redundant tasks, day after day.

Introspection is a "shadow-filled hallway" that most fear... I have always silently relished it, for it is through exploring that "hallway" that I found what I needed... Not in outside influences, but within myself. Others have always proved themselves to be wholly wanting & never satisfied... I am enough for me & neither want nor need anything from "them"... including approval. I realized this in my teens, and now in my sixties, I am quietly content that I quietly stood my ground for me all these decades. i've been on a spiritual (and humorously, financial) journey for several years as I exit my teenagehood and i've come to realize a few things.
i can only improve myself and my craft when i'm alone for extended periods of time. the more time i spend with other people, the more i begin to feel myself melt into them and become immersed in their strengths, problems, quirks and weaknesses. Time spent in solitude has allowed me to forge a strong sense of identity, while simultaneously placing a hard social bubble between me and other people. i find it hard to bring myself to actually care about other people, when my heart is filled with finances, spirituality, video games and routines.
solitude builds character like nothing else. i feel like a person *in* the world than a person *of* the world, and that brings with it a fantastic sense of independence. I've noticed that my friends who can't stand to be alone for extended periods of time or begin to feel depressed the longer they go without human contact are creatures of the crowd. without the group, they feel like nothing, and thus the mindshate beckons.

Its necessary to say (re-enphazise, actually) that solitude without a serious and complete reflexion about oneself, without detachment from all digital devices and technological fancies doesn't develop any spirituality, and may even make one more dumb, and overall unconscious of oneself. In other hand, talking to people, "suffering patiently from the other's vices" (in the christian sense), *leaving the goddamn phone*, getting out of one's cave and really practicing charity frees one from the tiny shell in which him habitually lives, and brings maturity to every person.
To summarize, solitude needs to envolve mental seclusion and spirituality, prayer and reading, while (alongside with it) one ought to actively engage yourself in the world by helping others and loving them, instead of simply labelling them as "stupid".

It's nice to have my own recent experiences summarized in a neat video. Since returning home from travel and seeing all my childhood friends again, I've noticed just how much the reality of your social circle contaminates your own reality. It's great to see everyone in the beginning then you quickly get to see where their heads are at.
They are ultimately good people. But if I spent any more time with them than what what was absolutely necessary, I'd be just as prone to the same attitudes, outlook, prospects, beliefs and intelligence that they have. They'd sit around all day drinking, smoking or wasting away in front of a screen instead of putting energy toward things that can change their circumstances. The phrase "rubbing off on you" is not just a joke. People can and do rub off on you and it takes real energy not to be brought down to their level of reality. People think kids are impressionable but it goes right into adulthood and beyond. Sometimes old friends have to moved along so you can go make something of yourself.

People waste so much time buying into the BS about being "happy" and finding a "soul mate", and so much of instagram and facebook is a facade. It's no wonder people feel dissatisfied comparing themselves to influencers who are pretending things are perfect, to get more engagement, often in their own pursuit of a shallow goal.
EDIT: Look at me with my negative energy outlook.... damn. Don't listen to me.

I find that most needed wisdom comes from my own depths during solitude in nature. Most people don't seem to really understand this and I get heavily criticized for it frequently but it brings me such peace. The poem The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry describes it all perfectly for me.❤✌🐾

This video perfectly aligns with events in my life it's as if I've heard just what I needed to hear about the subject that miraculously I already knew and was actively taking the steps to progress without consciously knowing it. As if a mysterious force is watching over me making sure the path ahead stays clear so that I may reach a destination of my own destiny. Of course I don't know if that's true but allow me to explain. Ever since I left college I did so with the purpose of cultivating my own creativity to do something with the precious life we are all given to not let obstacles that seem big be impossible to phase through. I wanted to sing, to write, to build and to experience my plan was vague and my life was unpredictable anyone looking at me from the outside would have thought I was reckless and moronic for making the choices I did. Anyone on the inside would have thought I was saddened and desperate. I knew that none of those things were true to me. A person I loved very deeply was hurting and disturbed by events that felt out of her control I stayed with her to help out but she shunned my decisions from time to time and spoke of the struggle I would have to endure for leaving college which I explained would be nothing compared to the struggle I would endure If I hadn't followed what I felt to be right. The home I stayed in was consumed in panic and dismay, it was almost as if stress was picking away at the paint on the walls, I was living in a state of decay and my messy surroundings reflected that. I couldn't keep my head straight I would fall into bouts of nervous depression in which I would try to shake it off like water on a dogs back. Sometimes I was consumed and angry at people and actions I couldn't control this made me feel helpless but still I knew I had to proceed. At the time i had surrounded myself with like minded artists and musicians who had all been creatively endowed some producers some singers some rappers some designers. With them I felt a sense of place and commonalty I wasn't alone I was in pursuit together with people I called friends and brothers. I knew right then and there that I had to be grateful no matter the circumstances, it may sound corny but this idea liberated me from a self destruction that would have decimated myself and others. In these people I found liberation and eventually an even greater love for my craft I wanted to be good to become great and to work on mastery. So I have isolated myself while keeping in touch and working with the friends. 'Without knowing it and being close to the point of giving up..... I found a group of like minded people that liberated me...... and I pursued mastering my dream in isolation which has lead me on strings of self discovery and given me peace as well as confidence.' Somehow things worked out even though I find myself fighting to stay motivated and positive sometimes I am happy and excited for what comes next . I am at a point now where I see no end to what's possible. I wrote in my journal recently that "I feel like a wave trying to reach it's way past the beach and onto the dry land, everytime I make the effort and crash onto the shore I am pulled back, I am restricted unable to fight the forces of the ocean I belong to. But what I didn't realize in my desperation to make it onto land was that I was pulled back into the body of the ocean a place of infinity. Within it's endless currents I can go anywhere." This was significant for me to recognize because I was so desperate to just reach land that I didn't realize I had the vastness of the ocean to explore. Anyway I still have much to learn and do and Academy of ideas is a good place to collect myself and stir the brain. I like to listen to the philosophical ideas of wise men who have experienced life in the same way many of us have. I guess all I can say is be kind and tolerant of other people and don't give up while you are alive.

Marvelous. It was Emerson’s Self Reliance that started me on my journey. TS Eliot’s The Cocktail Party played a great role in solidifying it. It was his response to Sartre’s No Exit, arguing that Hell is not other people, but that Hell is oneself, if the self is not developed.

I attended group therapy for a while and observed a common complaint about visiting family members over holidays.
They often feel injured or depressed afterwards. I think family acrimony is manifest by the so called 'pushing my buttons' syndrome. Family members often disguise deep rooted resentments and know how to create negative stress triggers against each other. I know this firsthand.
On account of this created crisis, many people are home alone and are okay with that. Rather than feeling lonely, holiday solitude can be seen as a reprieve from such stress and tension. You could bring a friend, neighbor, or say Church member to your family get together and they may well serve as a BUFFER to that kind of negative situation.
A few Thanksgivings ago, I had no place to go until I was invited to join a family for Thanksgiving dinner. The family was delighted to have a guest and it was quite pleasant.

Going to get married in a few months, but I've never been single in my conscious life and I have this nagging feeling that I'm making a mistake. Been close a few times but when it gets to I decide it's better to stay and im fine but just for a while... Pff I feel so pathetic sometimes and filled with anger.

Feeling the extreme of this, it gets scary if you're not equipped with methods to deal with emotions that arise from loneliness. I don't know if there is a light at the end of my solitude. Even the Buddha eventually found his enlightenment when he accepted a return to the world - with balance.

@@gee_ That is the key - balance. Too much isolation can be poisonous to your mind. Too much socialization can be poisonous to your individual spirit. It seems to me that isolation is for reflection and socialization is for action. There is a time for both!
