Making a Japanese Garden

  • This is an interesting project for multiple reasons.
    1. I live in deep snow country Japan. Every decision needs to consider where the snow will land and sit for months. It will be up to the windows and everything underneath with be crushed, frozen, and wet.
In other houses you can see where people once attempted to build balconies. Now only the concrete footings remain as they either rotted away or was crushed. This is just one element.
    2. I have a need / parameter to have a parking space. Eventually I will also install a carport here (again, needs careful snow consideration) but this year just parking is fine.
I currently have the shed but my big car only just fits inside. It’s better for a small car.
    3. I would like to have more than just a parking space but also an area to enjoy outside. I have a small courtyard area around the back of the house which I hope to use for this but I would also like to have something simple around the parking area, too.
One of the benefits I mentioned in the video is that by removing my mini forest I reduce the water (plants) and reduce the humidity effect… which leads to less mosquitos. But it doesn’t stop there, other troublesome pests like termites will also dislike the airy environment.
Without giving too much away (because I’m deciding on the fly) I do hope to incorporate Japanese elements of simplicity and appreciation for nature.
Enjoy as I learn more about Japanese garden design myself :)

Less than one million yen for a house is crazy!! I need a loan to pay for mine! Houses and prices aside, it’s really nice to see positivity from someone enjoying their life here. I hope you can always be happy 😊

Yes, but did you see the degree of mold he had in this home? The mold was not only in the walls, but go check out the ceilings. My heart just broke for him when I saw how bad it appeared.

Has anyone told you that the plants in your garden are Perennials? They will come back every year. You will need to dig them up if you do not want them there. You could replant them in the field across from your house and you would have a beautiful view!

Matt, thx for posting this video,! Helps me tremendously in ur methodology how to deal w/ weeds and bushes in the garden. I recently purchased a property in Fujigane and has almost 12,000 sq ft. of land. It's a nightmare to see both weeds and bushes to grow during the summertime.

I would literally cross the road and ask the workshop if they can use the front loader that's in the video to scrape off the top layer of the garden. Then you can start new garden level with the road.

all i could think was that surely getting that tractor from across the street would have made quick work of this job, especially when they can just dump the greens 20ft down the road lol

Maybe a couple of small garden beds to grow certain plants you want to keep manageable. Interesting enough to add landscape fabric with rock coverage facing the porch in the back to have a space for outdoor activities optional.

I love working in the yard. I would start with a blank canvas. The Japanese maple is amazing but needs a trim. I would take all of the debris and additional construction materials away from the space and get a backhoe and level the ground. I am not sure if Japan uses weed fabric but that and several tons of pea gravel would make the space super clean. Saving your private garden in the back. Again I would use gravel and stones as it creates a nice atmosphere.

This is exciting . I love watching somebody creating something either beautiful or practical (or both!) out of something which was neither before. Are you looking at your neighours gardens in the area for plant inspiration? Or even in the neighboring town?s/villages? What survives in their gardens should be in yours? Really like the sped up garden clearing. Its "peaceful" in itself :-)

Hey Matt. First, I love the videos and what you did with the house. My question is, I know you call it a shed, but I feel like it's a garage, and if there was a way to widen the garage door, and use it as a garage.... you wouldn't have to lose your back yard.

DO NOT PAINT THE WOODWORK OR THE DOORS!!!!
THEY ARE TRULY WORKS OF ART.
Live with it for a while until you can appreciate the craftsmanship around you. I’m a carpenter and home builder and I can assure you that the people who built your home are a dying breed. Study the workmanship for yourself. It’s the best in the world 🌎.
