How did I miss this? It doesn't matter that it's just an alternator belt, Carly is great for tackling it herself 👍. It may be a small job ,but it is still important .I once changed the fan belt on my Morris Minor after overheating in an unfamiliar town. It wasn't quite so easy as the Daihatsu, because the alternator bolts (converted to alt. 20+ years ago ) were quite rusty...

Quality bit of tinkering! Can I make an observation regarding tidying the unit though - I know you don't have a lot of spare time, but the only way to really get it tidy and organised is to take absolutely EVERYTHING out, including all members of the fleet, and start from scratch. Tidying up little corners will never make much difference, and is counterproductive!!😀

I remember tightening the belt on my FrankenSaab 99 with the 2.0L B engine in place of it's 1.75 liter TR7 based engine. The alternator is nearly under the overhanging side of the 45 degree leaning engine and is also a lot closer to the firewall than the smaller engine, which made access from above not easy. Would have been smart to have bought a pair of wheel stands/ramps. I'd use a jack stand and place the right front wheel under the footwell bulge, yeah a lot of sore necks from that car's needed repairs. I was much younger then. Miss HubNut gets a well done from me, she's a stickler for detail and that matters.

I once had a belt on my Jag X type that had been catching a jubilee clip and the tiny resultant tail whipping around on the belt going around loosened and removed the water drain plug on the fuel filter caused the engine to stop. Miss Hubnut, your spannering skills for a beginner are top notch, keep at it. What i will say is, after about 100-200 miles re tension that alternator belt just to take out the initial stretch, then it will be fine for a good few thousend miles. good way to do it is slacking the bolts and get Ian to hold the tension very tight with a long lever bar or long screw driver then do the bolts back up tight, job done and not really any need to disconnect the battery when retensioning the belt.

eh, don't worry about the spanner use. it comes eventually and gets to be second nature (my stepfather has a little trick where he can just LOOK at a bolt head the first time, and be able to tell the size). The lights, though...oy. glad to know we're (Yanks) not the only ones who have to put up with that. When they introduced them on the 99's in the Parabola type, they went opaque in only *three months of use* (and I mean completely opaque!)
btw, Daihatsu actually had a single model year shot in the states in 91. I think only 4-5000 units were sold over the entire country.

The issue with the sump reminds me of the engine and gearbox I bought for my Peugeot Expert, from a breaker's yard in Kent. The gearbox was the wrong type for my vehicle - it had a pull-type clutch instead of a push-type. When I rang them up to tell them, they told me it should be OK because the engine and gearbox both came out of the same vehicle. When I then told them that the engine was still fitted with a flexplate and torque converter, they immediately offered me a refund on the gearbox and I was allowed to keep it. I ended up getting another one from a yard in Bolton.
