- We humans are restless creatures, always seeking what the French religious thinker Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) called divertissement or "diversion." Understanding the root cause of our restlessness, the tension between our conflicting capacities for profound wretchedness as well as genuine greatness, is the key to coping with it.

This is a great quote, but Dostoevsky captured the same idea more effectively when he wrote, "Reason is but a slave to passion."
