    Raccoons love the smell of fish fertilizer or fertilizer for fruit trees - I learned the hard way. I had a lemon tree planted only to find it torn out of the container and the raccoons dug a huge hole into the container looking for fish, soil everywhere.

    Use only liquid fertilizer for potted plants! that is a good advise. I also thought about it but was not sure till i heard you.

    this is so helpful, thank you! I have been researching how to water and fertilise my container roses, and nearly everything says to use a slow release fertiliser, and gives no advice on winter care!

      As long as the varieties are hardy for your climate zone and are well established, then they should be just fine in a container through the winter without tons of added protection. A heavy layer of mulch and maybe a burlap covering or rose cone on nights below freezing will help keep them safe!

    Is 17 inch pot appropriate for roses you send in 1 gallon pots? Can I top it off with organic leaf compost, organic alpha alpha, little bit of organic chicken manure and organic worm castings ? Just ordered 4 English David Austin roses from you and want to set them up for success. This is my therapy new project. If they don't thrive I won't take it very well. Thank you!

    Ben - I have purchased a lot of roses from you over the years, and I have been delighted with your roses and customer service. I have had difficulty overwintering roses in containers. My containers are large, and I plant them according to your recommendations. I am in the Chicago area, Zone 5b. The roses are, for the most part, Zone 5 roses. I move the roses to the east side of the house to protect against the winter west and north winds. I use your mulch, etc., and I still have winter losses. Am I missing something? Should I only use Zone 4 roses in pots? Thank you in advance for replying.

    • @heirloomroses
      @heirloomroses  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Thanks for reaching out! Great question, in general your rose will have less insulation when grown in a container, and you may need to select roses that can withstand the colder temperatures they will be exposed to. In that respect, Zone 4 roses could be a great option.
      However, our Customer Care Team would also be happy to speak with you regarding your specific situation. They may be able to make specific recommendations on insulating the roses you currently have. They are available Monday through Friday 6:00 am to 4:30 pm PST at 800-820-0465, by chat at HeirloomRoses.com, or via email at info@heirloomroses.com.

    That container looks big, does it matter the rose is young & small growing in a big pot ? I just purchased fish fertilizer & it was delivered yesterday!

    • @heirloomroses
      @heirloomroses  Před 3 lety +2

      It can be beneficial to start a young rose in a smaller pot and size up as the plant grows, however the rose will still thrive perfectly fine if started in a large container such as this. The key is that you use a pot with drainage holes and fertilize with a liquid fertilizer regularly through the season.

    Ben - I'm trying to find the right balance of your fish fertilizer for my container roses - such that I'm minimizing an environment that attracts aphids, yet provides optimal growing conditions for the roses; I do also use your mint compost and the soil you have that contains the worm particles ;-) Last year the aphids were bad and after researching online this year it sounds like too much nitrogen can create an environment where the aphids will return and thrive--I want the roses to thrive but not the aphids! I'm not a fan of the pesticides out there be that soap based, ones with oils, diatomaceous earth, etc. Net-Net: I'm reluctant to add the fish fertilizer this year -- wondering if cutting the amount of fish fertilizer to a lower amount say half what the package recommends might achieve the right balance.
    What are your thoughts? Thank you!

    • @heirloomroses
      @heirloomroses  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello! Yes, cutting down the amount of fish fertilizer would reduce the nitrogen. We recommend fertilizing about every 2-4 weeks for roses in a container and 4-6 for in-the-ground roses. You could lean more towards the 4 or 6 weeks time span and see if that works we also recommend Bio advanced 3 in 1 as a pest deterrent, and here is a link to an article on natural home remedies pest deterrents. www.heirloomroses.com/info/natural-remedies-for-roses I hope this is helpful!

    Could I just add more soil on top as the plant matured or do I need to remove the entire plant in order to add more soil at the bottom of the pot? Please advise

    • @heirloomroses
      @heirloomroses  Před 3 lety

      We do recommend replacing the soil entirely after several seasons in a container as the soil will become dull and devoid of nutrients. Refreshing the soil will keep the roots healthy and growing strong for years in a container!

    Ben, what is your opinion of superthrive for potted roses?

    • @heirloomroses
      @heirloomroses  Před 3 lety +1

      Superthrive is a good option as it is a liquid form of fertilizer, though the ingredients are not super clear and the nitrogen content is not very high in comparison to a fish fertilizer. Roses in containers need a more frequent supply of nitrogen to maintain healthy foliage.

      @@heirloomroses thanks so much for your reply. I’ve read articles by show rose growers who concoct a “magical elixir” of alfalfa tea, fish emulsion, super thrive and chelated iron and wanted your opinion on super thrive before using it. I do use the other three ingredients as well as a yearly top dress of worm castings. I swear those roses eat better than I do 😋

      @Heirloom Roses I’m really a newbie at caring for roses but always wanted to since being a little girl growing up with my grandpa. Was wondering how much liquid fish fertilizer/water mixture I should use for a new 16”H, 16” diameter (Floribunda) container I just planted?

    Hi. My container is about that size. How many gallons of water do I water my baby rose bush daily when temps r like 90° ?

    • @heirloomroses
      @heirloomroses  Před 2 lety

      Hello! You should water your rose until there is a small pooling of water around the base of the rose and then continue to water once the soil drys; with this heat, you may need to water more than once a day.
