I actually disagree with the specialist take, I think it’s pretty much impossible to be a well rounded fighter while also having BJJ as good as Maia or striking as good as Izzy, it takes about 10 years of consistent training to get a BJJ black belt, Izzy fought 80 kickboxing fights with MMA fights spliced in between for about 7-8 years before debuting in the ufc and exclusively focusing on MMA. Hypothetically, let’s say you take a kid at age 6-7 and just train them MMA until they have their first fight at 18, and then you take another kid and start training them at age 6-7 in just BJJ until their 18 and mix some MMA training in for 2-3 years in between, the kid training BJJ is gonna be better on the ground guaranteed, and the MMA kid most likely won’t even be able to compete on the ground, It takes a really long time to master a realm of the MMA game so I think specialists will always be a thing.

All I know is, you don't beat Izzy by chasing him. You can't let him counter, he's too good at it. If you can at least hold your own in the stand-up and make him open up and attack you first, you are much more likely to land takedowns in open space and keep top position for an extended time. That was the biggest difference between Jan and Marvin. Jan let Izzy do the mistakes, Marvin tried to be the bull and got Matador'd, like everyone else in that division.

Izzy didn’t even come in at 205 lbs to fight at lightheavyweight. He gave up at least 20 lbs to fight Jan who actually cuts weight to make 205. In the cage the day after weigh ins, Jan is easily 220 lbs at least to Izzy who didn’t cut weight at all. He was 200lbs. He was underweight. He gave up so much size to Jan.
