OBEKA BREAKS THE RULES WITH MULTIPLE UPKEEPS! - Obeka, Splitter of Seconds EDH

  • Normally I will wait until the new set is done, but Obeka, Splitter of Seconds has my full attention and implored me to get a headstart on Outlaws of Thunder Junction. Something about this Commander is compelling and so far in small tests, has shown me that it can do some REALLY silly things if you can get multiple upkeeps off her damage trigger.

    Blade of Selves plus Mirror Box has the potential to explode with a ton of upkeeps.

      @twilightscallmtg  Před 3 měsíci

      It could. Remember, the token copies don't get the '+1/+1 for each other creature with the same name' because they're tokens. Only the original Obeka would get that part of the Mirror Box bonus, making her a 6/9. Otherwise, the token copies (with no other modifiers) would be 3/6's.

      @@twilightscallmtg Ah, good catch, didn't see that myself. While not as explosive as I thought, it still has the potential for a solid boost.

    Recently built a Grixis ninth doctor / Clara deck , this definitely goes in the 99.. might be good enough to steal the commander slot as well with a few tweaks.

      Nice. I generally don't like the Grixis color combination but I like Commanders that bend or break rules of the game to generate some kind of benefit. Extra upkeeps aren't new, I've run Paradox Haze in my Scarab God deck for a long time, but being able to chain 5+ upkeeps in a row off this? Yeah, it can be pretty fun to see what happens and so far in a proxied up version of the deck I like how it plays.
      One version I had worked up used the Ninth Doctor in it, along with Paradox Haze and Sphinx of the Second Sun, but they didn't feel right in the build. Almost 'win-more' when you can just use the slots to make Obeka better or keep her around, and still get the extra upkeeps.

      I agree, I can see why the combat damage trigger is more important to buff up with Obeka than including the extra upkeep cards.

    Something simple like Think Tank could put a lot of work in this deck. I also really like Gate to the Aether and Darksteel Reactor here too.

      Those are all great ones. There's literally too many to put in one deck. I had trouble focusing on a line of win cons to make it a little more consistent. At one point the deck also had a self-mill/Jace plan + Scarab God/Zombies thing going on and it was so scattershot. I think you have to focus on one plan and lean hard into it for it to work well.

    is the amount of upkeeps equal to her power? or the amount of times she hits.

    • @twilightscallmtg
      @twilightscallmtg  Před 3 měsíci

      Power. So the larger the hit, the more you get, but you can go even further and go with extra combats or double strike to get more upkeeps as well.

      EDHRec is saying out of more than 3.8 million decks in their database, 607 have it listed. That's less than .00001%. I think I'll take my chances and if my playgroup decides to start using it, I'll start packing artifact destruction. No one is raining on my upkeep parade.

      @@twilightscallmtg they will if they start playing things like 'glacial chasm' as well. Since it is extremely good with negative upkeep cards. If Obeka becomes even a top 50 deck. Eon Hub will see play as a general hate card.

    • @twilightscallmtg
      @twilightscallmtg  Před 4 měsíci

      Bit of a "dies to removal" reasoning. Hate teching for one single deck that isn't a cEDH deck is overkill. There's plenty of ways of messing with the deck without running jank like Eon Hub.
      And if Chasm was a concern, Demolition Field exists, as does the Court of Ambition. I didn't put it in my list as it's a bit oppressive but I'd pull it in for Chasm as loss of life isn't stopped by the Chasm. You could even Skullcrack another player and shut off the damage prevention.
      There's always and answer for a strategy and there's always a response. You can't prepare for everything so you prepare for what you can and adjust the deck as necessary. Two narrow, barely played hate pieces wouldn't drive me off this deck or any other deck for that matter.

    • @zurran00
      @zurran00 Před 4 měsíci

      @@twilightscallmtg if it was just a hate card I would agree. But there are plenty of cards that get better with Eon Hub. Like mystic remora etc. With all of the upkeep triggers in a normal EDH game. Eon Hub is becoming more of a toolbox card. That can drown out many decks that rely on upkeep triggers.

      Universes Beyond isn't everyone's cup of tea, and those cards can be swapped for other cards if you wish. They don't bother me and they give me choices of reusable unblockability that wasn't tied to an Aura.
