The fact people weren't aware to not stare at... the sun... is a bit depressing.

@JoulieRodgerwho even are you kiddo?
you add normal stupidity of some people, and add brain rot into it. and you get this.
to be fair, alot of people think the light is what damages your eyes, not the uv radiation
I would assume there was some confusion of the definition of totality, as if you were in the totality path of 100% you were able to stare genuinely directly at the sun for like 3-4mins with 0 consequences, this information had circulated prior to the event and I'm assuming some people didn't get the difference of percentages or what totality is.

I had the eclipse glasses on and was still afraid to stare directly up for more than a few seconds at a time. Possible damaging your eyes is not worth it guys, please, in any situation. A few seconds of awe is not worth the possible longterm consequences 💔
The real awe only comes with totality if you're in the shadow's path. Had close to 2 minutes looking at the corona directly where I live. Equally spectacular was the 360° sunset. As soon as the surface peeked out, I put the polarized glasses back on.
with glasses its only 30 seconds then 10 minute eye rest is what they dont tell you

Why would you fixate it more than 5 seconds at a time when the real show before totality is what it is doing to the surrounding environment? Colors all became desaturated.
The interesting thing about the eye damage is that eclipses don’t actually hurt your eyes more - it’s just way easier to stare at the sun for a prolonged period of time without discomfort. But the damaging rays are still there!
The sun *always* hurts your eyes
Huh the more you know.
Also the iris will be more open when you stare at an eclipse (because it's darker outside), making the problem worse than just staring normally at the sun.
This. People think it's some bad omen or something. It's just that the full force of the Sun is still hitting your retinas. Unless there's 100% totality of the eclipse.

I had my eclipse glasses on and only looked at the sun during totality. It was an incredible sight to see. While I didn't get any eye pain, It did feel a bit weird to look at, more like something felt super off. Seeing the eclipse during totality makes me remember that I am on 1 tiny little planet in the universe and that the cosmos is a lot bigger than I think.
did u know that the universe has at least 2 burgers in it
I have two stories to share:
The first is simple. I took off my glasses prematurely and had only a fraction of a second to see it the eclipse, but I still got a minor headache.
The second is dumb. When I was much younger, I had the pleasure of witnessing a completely different eclipse. I didn't take my glasses off, not because I was afraid of eye damage, but because I was afraid that you couldn't look at an eclipse because of an eldritch moon monster that woke up when it felt the Sun's rays and would kill you if you looked at it. This lasted for LITERAL YEARS, before the discussion over this eclipse began, and I realized "oh wait you can't look at it because its literally the sun"
I was a stupid child.
As someone who has actual problems in the retina thanks to macular degeneration, you can't imagine how much it _irks_ me to see people blasting holes in theirs inspite of many being explicitly warned not to.

Solar eye damage is actually much faster and easier during an eclipse;
Because the tiny sliver of light remaining is really easy for your eyes to focus on instead of a big disc, AND because the infrared is massively reduced (the infeared is what makes you look away from the sun normally, you dont "feel" the UV), and the image is resolvable by your eyes...
Your cornea basically focuses all the remaining uv into a tiny spot in your retina and it causes damage REALLY FAST
I would assume that the moon would also bend a majority of the suns light around it like a lens.
What do you mean „the moon bends light“?

I saw the full total solar eclipse back in 2017 in Kentucky and it was a sight to see. It went from day to night in the matter of seconds. seeing the sky darken so quickly and the sun be over the moon was mesmerizing. I know people have been told not to look up at the solar eclipse, but that should only be when you are not in the area of totality. In the area of totality back in 2017, I stared at the eclipse for like a few minutes until it became bright again and my eyes were fine.
when they say "don't stare into an eclipse" they mean during the partial phases. Every organization said staring at totality is fine.
I had to google this because I thought I might've been having a Mandela effect.
During the last one I was fortunate to be in a direct path and looked at the apex of the eclipse without eye protection.
*"During the core of totality, looking at the eclipse with the naked eye is safe."*
Basically, the fact most of it is blocked by the moon leaves essentially the atmosphere of the sun, which is still glowing plasma. simply put it's all the flares and solar winds, (and not the actual surface) it's not deadly to stare at.
My exact google search was:
"I thought total eclipse were safe to look at."

I actually understand why a lot of people did look at it. Its the simple fact that it was never explained properly why you shouldn't, and its not because of the amount of light hitting your eye. The reason for it is the quality of the light. Light from the sun has a lot of very high energy radiation, and even a little bit of it can significantly hurt your eyes. Your eyes have adapted to know to not look at bright things because of that. As we evolved bright things and eye damage went hand and hand. But during an eclipse the sun isn't bright but can still damage your eyes. But your body doesn't know that so it doesn't react
I'm just wondering how this happened to so many people. Like even if you don't get specialized glasses for the eclipse, you can literally just hold your phone in front of your face while in the camera app and watch it through that. Then you also get the benefit of rewatching it later and also keeping your vision. And almost everyone in the US owns a phone, so why didn't they think of this?
Because filming with your phone’s camera directly at sun will also cause damage to it.
Still better than watching it directly, as your phone's camera can be replaced and repaired, while your eyes cannot

the eye doctors must be happy for a sudden strike of money coming in
Thank you LIMC for making the perfect video to educate future generations
Having seen the 2017 eclipse and the 2024 eclipse, It truly is an experience to witness.
I whole heartedly wish that everyone gets to witness one in their lifetime.
Words, Pictures, Videos, None of them _really_ capture what it is really like.
I only got to see the particle eclipse but hopefully theirs 2045
@@tux_the_astronaut i am not waiting for 20 or 2something years just to see a cool event for the first time.
I was able to thankfully catch the 2017 one in all its glory. I wasn't as lucky with this one.
@@SilloMakeThingsoh well in that case, feel free to just force another eclipse to happen. yeah just go ahead and do that whenever you feel like it, yknow?
Idk the video I got captured the gist of it minus the thought of “will it return?” The unreasonable part of my brain pitched out
The problem is people thinking that the reason you don’t look at the sun is that it’s too bright when it’s mostly the UV rays.
What I don't quite get is, like... they scatter and bounce, though??? It's surprising to me that we don't get eye damage from going outside without sunglasses (at least not much faster than we actually do)
@colbyboucher6391 when light scatters, it gets weaker. You can still get eye damage from the sun if you're not directly looking at it though. Specifically sunlight.
Sunlight that bounces off of snow is still concentrated and can give your eyes sunburn if you stare at it too long while you're outside. Snow glasses are special sunglasses made for people who live in snowy climates that can give their eyes sunburn.
For real lmao
some kid tried ripping off my glasses while i was staring at it
mom: DONT LOOK AT IT
youtube: DONT LOOK AT IT
me: haha eyes go burn
I never expected that last line from a meme news outlet channel. "Poetically viewing beauty so raw and powerful, it can cause blindness." What the hell LIMC that was really good
Everyone in my college started cheering at totality, which was a pretty cool experience
The stuff people do for attention is crazy 😂, “hey, I’m gonna look at the sun while being told CONSISTENTLY to not look at it with the naked eye” hilarious
gettin flashbacks to the day of black sun with this one
They're gonna sue the sun for not having a "do not stare" sign on it.
Its like using light mode on youtube, both of them makes you having s conversation with the sun
I was working in my lawn wondering why the hell the the area was darker until I got a text about it happening
insert spongebob "MY EYES!!!" meme
sun hurty

I eat the cotton candy from my walls
@Beanzops what does it taste like

Man if only there was a pair of glasses you could get for free at your library or any place that's giving them outthat was made specifically to be worn during a once in a life time celestial event
I stared at it bc my school wasn't allowing us to go outside but somehow didn't get eye damage, it was only half blocked.
