It isn't American or British, it's the young audience. Roasts have happened forever now and are hilarious, every celebrity has been roasted. But teens and parents in the audience don't get it. Simon got it though.
Roasts used to be held on purpose giving the person time to prepare to be insulted, but often it comes intertwined in some speech.
I guarantee any judge, if they were told "comedy central is going to hold a roast for you" they would be ok and laugh and take it on the chin. And Howie saw this after reviewing it.

I can’t get enough of this. Everything he said was true. The guy is a genius.
He fooled the crowd and judges so hard with his little passion speech in the beginning, boy was it a surprise when he absolutely destroyed them!
Well he mostly didn't lie. They just didn't know that "comedy" meant "funny for us, not for you". And the "happiness" part, that too wasn't technically a lie since plenty of people were and are happy with his performance.

Most British humor is a bit more hardcore and they aren’t as strict about family friendly content. Most American humor is more toned down and caters to being family friendly.
