I see his product like Mcdonalds. Not the highest quality of its industry but its not trying to be, but its fast, binge worthy and its predictable, there is a market for it, so Mcdonalds doesn't improve its product because it doesn't have to. It's customer base is pleased! That's how I think his content is which is why he focuses on quantity and less on quality

Y'all need to stop throwing Oprah Winfrey's name into everything including Tyler Perry movies. Oprah and Tyler actually fell out because of his poor writing. If you remember he had about 3 shows on her network and she most likely told him he needed to explore better storylines and hire better writers. He got mad and went over to BET. They have since reconciled but they are no longer working together.
Oprah produces along with female directors like Ava DuVernay and Mara Brock Akil and gives us shows like "When They See Us" the 4 part series about the Central Park Five, "Cherish The Day", "David Makes Mann", "Greenleaf" and "Queen Sugar" which was an excellent show where black men like the character Hollywood, Ralph Angel and Remy were all nuanced and portrayed with depth. Oprah's shows and movies are well written and well produced with multi-dimensional black men.

To some degree the market place determines what is being produced for consumption. Those negative stereotypes of black men and women are being distributed in many other ways. The music, social media content, the news, politics, TV shows especially the real life drama shows, sports, podcast Diddy. If Tyler closed down shop today and never made another movie would all the negative images of black folk suddenly stop?

    • @thekid8224

Nope and you're right it's supple and demand. I have to be honest but as a community we need to look in the mirror and ask why we don't support films of us in good roles. Tyler Perry is using his movies as his own therapy. Which is endangering the images of the black community. Yes he was abused by his stepfather however he may not see the part his mother played in that. If he didn't know that man wasn't his biological father, his mother definitely knew.
The issue I often times see in the ADOS community is that we pedestalize our women and ignore our men. No matter what mama does she is always right. That has damaged us to the point that we have a superimposed superwoman image of our women that doesn't live up to reality. Tyler is using that to make his money. The question we have to ask ourself is, is it OK just because he is black or would it be OK if someone form another ethnic background did it?

Tyler has shown he can make funny & thought-provoking movies like "Why Did I Get Married 1 & 2" that are somewhat balanced; but he knows where his bread is buttered. He knows what his target audience responds to regardless of how many naysayers on the outside keep saying about his work. The ppl that matter to him are the ppl that are buying the tickets & willing to put their money where their mouth is.
He had a brief dialogue on Kenya Barris's show BlackAF where he explains his thought process a bit among the criticism.
I can't knock him. He has created a lot of content & put alot of ppl to work, and made himself rich in the process. Most of his films aren't for me, but that's okay because apparently there's enough ppl that just eat his content up.
The question of whether his content is problematic is a difficult one for me. I'm more likely to side on the perspective that it's Art, & whether it's low brow with repetitive tropes or not it has a genuine audience. You make Art for ppl to appreciate it & many clearly do. Believe it or Not there's a whole lot of Black viewership that go to watch movies or TV with no intention of being stimulated or challenged intellectually by what they are watching. They just want to see themselves on the screen doing something they can cheer or boo at.

It was Tee Rash. I only watched it because a couple people recommended it so I gave it a try. It started off okay and I kept waiting for it to get good but it never did. It went from okay to bad to terrible. Tyler Perry be doing too much. It's hard to argue with his formula because it works for him but as a fan of film, I would love for him to hire some writers.
On another note, if anyone hasn't seen the Tyler Perry documentary, Maxine's Baby, I highly recommend checking it out. It was excellent.

The key is to not let artists’ intentions dictate the analysis of the art. Who cares what he meant it to be? It can be analyzed in lots of ways that have nothing to do with his intent.
It’s OK to enjoy it as art and then analyze it on a deeper level. It’s also OK to just enjoy it as art and that’s it. Sometimes we need a break from reality, even if they escape mirrors reality (e.g., romance novels).

You are correct and the reason he does it is because they wouldn’t allow him to continue to operate on the level he does in Hollywood otherwise. He loves his money and his lifestyle much more than he loves God or the image he portrays of us on the screen and that is proven evident in the body of work he has been producing. That is what the devil loves and God hates but that is what keeps the money rolling in and he can keep holding hands with the devil while pretending to be a friend of God. It won’t end well for Him unfortunately because all the money and fame in this world can’t save anyone from the wrath of God…

Your analysis was so on point but I think you missed the point that was right there. It’s neither and both. His success and therefore a lot of aspects of his freedom became linked to making money from past trauma and no doubt, there is some cathartic value to that for him as well. So I suspect that a lot of his self identity is tied to doing things this way

While watching the Grio Awards on tv, i remember the audience "gasped" collectively when TP was given a award. Black folk know TP movies and tv shows are pure garbage, but he keeps black actors working. I have tried to watch some of his movies and tv shows. The Oval is pure trash and the dialog is redundant (I wonder if the actors laugh at him behind his back). We as black folks deserve quality over quantity.

I don’t know why Mr. Perry will not hire a writing team and come up with some better subjects and characters. There is no real variety in his work now. I feel like I don’t need this kind of regurgitated traumatic and disturbing form of sexual content in my psyche.

  • @quirky6334
    @quirky6334 Před 5 měsíci

TP's movies give me the impression that I'm watching someone else's trauma response, his whole career is a trauma response on loop.
In psychology, they talk about how sometimes victims of trauma can repeatedly replay or reenact their trauma for a long time, unconsciously (in different ways, but same dynamics). The "big scary black man" was very present in his life and it plays out on screen over and over again. This unconscious behavior is also the reason why some people continue to experience more trauma thereafter. It actually affects the way the nervous system and the way the brain functions (PTSD). You can see physical differences in a healthy untraumatized brain vs a traumatized brain via side by side scan.
In order to heal, you have to process that trauma, understand it, then train your mind and nervous system to recognize it as a past memory, old stuff, so that your body understands that it's time to store it away in the right place, the subconcious region of the mind where past information belongs. A key component to doing that successfully is by sealing it with a positive thought, like an alternate outcome or something that gives you peace about it, and recalling that installment when old stuff pops back up. This is often accomplished through visualization exercises and/or somatic therapy and EMDR therapy.
