I was recently contacted by a company called Acuva and asked if I would be interested in being an affiliate for their LED-UV water purification product. I said possibly but would first pick one up and give it a try for a few months, especially when boondocking, and get back to them. They were nice enough to send me one out the next day at no charge to test out.
So, I decided to publish an unboxing/installation video and then come back later with my product review. The model Acuva sent me is the ArrowMAX 2.0, the latest version for RVs and boats.
The Acuva system disinfects the RV freshwater using UV LEDs and claims it eliminates "up to 99.9999% of bacteria, viruses, and cysts, offering safe drinking water straight out of your tap. Never worry about the quality of your water source ever again."
- Provides flow rate of 2 liters per minute (0.52 gallons)
- Can dispense 120,000 liters of water in its lifetime
- Comes with Acuva™ Smart Faucet
- It can be hooked up to multiple waterlines
- High-quality polymer body casing
- Stainless steel reactor inside for UV-LED disinfection
- Chemical-free, mercury-free
- Point-of-Use system for RVs, campervans, and tiny houses
- NSF/ANSI 55 Class 'B' and NSF/ANSI 372 certified by IAPMO R&T
We already use an excellent 3 stage water filter system from a company called Clearsource, but due to my wife's sensitive stomach, we still, when traveling, buy purified water. The Acuva purifier could put an end to that. Providing us that little bit of extra peace of mind to drink from our onboard tank water or at unknown campgrounds.

you're lucky you had PEX under your sink. Our RV had braided hose, I had to micky mouse together a way to make that T fitting work using adapters and small pieces of pex pipe
I would like to see a water quality test before and after.
Here you are. A video done by the RVgeeks in 2018 where they had lab testing done with river water and known contaminated water - czcams.com/video/0qk0vycLYAs/video.html I imagine the newer model is as good or better than the tested model from back then.
@@LoveYourRV Nice, thanks! I like it so far.
The pre-filter lasts 1000 gallons ($20 US). The advanced pre-filter last 4000 gallons ($50 US). The max worktop thickness is 1/2" which I think would limit the faucet placement.
I imagine the plastic spacer where the wire feeds through could be cut down a bit or even use a different piece of pipe with a smaller hole.
Great job Ray. The absence of any plumbers crack was much appreciated. 👨🔧 👍🙂
Tums on hand for the install....... Smart man!!! LOL!
Looking forward to the future video on this product.
Ray, I put an Acuva in our Class A this winter and used during our 90 day spring trip. I really like it and helped give me consistently good tasteing water. It as used as final stage after sediment filter, 20 micron taste, 5 micron taste and now this UV unit and 1 micron polishing filter
Thanks. Interesting product. Looking foreword to your review.
I installed one 7 months ago and it has been a blessing. UV is the gold standard for water purification. Customer service is excellent also.
I wonder if the blue light around the base of the faucet indicates that the unit is detecting that UV light is being generated internally, or whether it merely indicates that the UV LED's are powered (but not necessarily working). The former setup is less prone to undetected system failures.
I have to ask the rep. The marketing states "Visible indicator light to ensure UV is working" and the manual troubleshooting says if red contact Acuva support or yellow manes low voltage supply.
❤ Ray, I have seen residential units in the past made of stainless steel and about 16 in long. They had a count down 1 year timer on them to remind you to change the UV bulb. You may want to see what the life of the unit is.
Also, Ann may want to look into fermentation drinks. Things like kombucha. Love her photos of the areas you travel. 👍👍
They say the lifespan is listed as 120,000 liters (31,700 gallons). It is nice that the thing only runs the LED when it's turned on. Some of the older ones kept the lamps on I've read.
Anne's stomach issues stem mostly from damage when she accidentally drank jet fuel traveling in Russia back in the 90s. It was often mixed with booze. It harmed the stomach lining and has also had a few bad water-related sicknesses traveling the world. She is very careful now. :) She has tried kombucha, didn't do much at all for her other than taste bad. :) Cheers, Ray
Nice that it's a Canadian Company. Seems pricy but then a person's good health is priceless.
The RV Geeks installed a unit similar to this one about 2 years ago. As far as I know they like it and are still using it.
Great job installing the unit. I really like that you show your work, a lot of sites do not show theirs. Will be interested to see how Ann likes it.
Really love watching your videos, you do such a great job explaining all you do. Ann is very lucky having you around. Great husband!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you. :)
Hi Ray... I purchased this unit and installed it with no issues, works great so far... but i was wondering if you've changed your filter yet? Is there a way to get that filter off without cutting the white tube? Maybe there is a trick to getting the filter off? Once you push the tube in it seems locked in pretty good so i'm not sure how to pull it back out to change it... any thoughts?
Thanks for all the great videos by the way 👍👍👍
I haven't changed mine yet but I think its just a standard quick connect. To release push the outside ring in and pull the tube out. Here is a video demo czcams.com/video/8Xo4fl7MLYw/video.html Cheers, Ray
@@LoveYourRV Awesome!!!! Thanks so much Ray, I've never used those quick connects before so i appreciate the feed back!
As usual you've answered the question for me, like so many of your other videos have! 👍👍👍👍
Thanks again... Mike...
Nice install--very straightforward. Seems to be a well-made unit. Looking forward to your follow-up review.
Nice Job, thank You! Can't wait for the review. I did put in the Eco-NX this winter where you helped me with electrical :-0) . I have yet to find a better 12v hookup, right now on the pump. Working well, good test but I did not have the water tested yet. Cheers 😊
Full timers "Prêts pour la Route" installed on in their Airstream a while ago and then went to Mexico for a few months ( had to cut the trip short due to the pandemic).
But had 0 issues drinking the water in Mexico from different sources after filtering with the Acuva, including the dogs.
Cheers Ray! - Another great install - stay cool!!!
Hey Ray, just wondering if you have an update on the ArrowMax 2.0 system. Are you still using it? Thanks!
Yes, here was a 3 month update czcams.com/video/xt3rxdD6JrA/video.html and this one from July 2022 czcams.com/video/QhGEugiSDO0/video.html We are still using it, works great. Cheers, Ray
@@LoveYourRV Thank you Ray! Sorry, I should have dug a little deeper for the reviews. I really appreciate your quick response. We are getting a little tired of lugging the 7 gallon water containers around. Currently enjoying Louisiana now before heading to the SW then home to Vancouver WA. in the Spring. Cheers!
Have a great trip!
Cheers Ray!
Hi Ray, Like 523 now. :)
I am installing mine this weekend. At 12:12 you mumble "gonna cut off some of this pipe". Did you? How did you mount it to the exterior RV wall? 3/4" screws? How many? Has it held? I assume this wall is foam core. I was thinking of using VHB tape. Do you think this would hold?
Yes, I used 4 - 3/4 inch screws and its held fine, its not too heavy. My wall is foam core. I think VHB would hold no problem.
Hey Ray! How are you and Anne enjoying the ACUVA system? I hear they are running 20% discount for Black Friday. I'd like to use your affiliate link.
Thanks! Here it is www.acuvatech.com/shop/?ref=loveyourrv We have been using it all the time and works great. Anne gives me the thumbs up on the taste. I did an update video not too long ago czcams.com/video/xt3rxdD6JrA/video.html Happy Thanksgiving, Ray
@@LoveYourRV Ordered the 2.0 system this morning with smart faucet and extended filter. $640 CAD including taxes and delivery!
Cool, let me know how you like it.
Thank you for your thorough and, as usual, professional presentation. This appears to be a high-quality unit. Playing The Devil's Advocate, meaning that I dabble in the details. My most important question that I would like answered is exactly how good is this unit at what it is supposed to do? As far as I remember, water purification systems certification is completely voluntary. While the company's website is very informative, they are obviously marketing their product. So I guess my bottom-line question is, exactly how good is the water that's coming out other than, take my word for it. I have found no data on testing of this unit from independent sources. Having said all that, I am certain that it is exactly what it appears to be.
Here is a video from the RVgeeks in 2018 where they had independent lab testing done with river water and known contaminated water - czcams.com/video/0qk0vycLYAs/video.html I imagine the newer model is as good or better than the tested model from back then. Cheers, Ray
@@LoveYourRV thank you Ray, if I wasn't such a lazy bum I would have scrolled down and seeing you had already answered this question. I'm going to be a Burr under your saddle, and stay in Devil's Advocate mode. I watched the rvgeeks video. Nothing personal, but there's some marketing going on in that one. Unless I misunderstood. The sampling and artificial contamination was being done by the people who produce this product. That makes this quasi-independent. I did find an interesting link on the webpage after much perusing and the bottom line is there is really not a clear standard in testing for water sterilization in this area.
But again I must add that this system does appear to be a high-quality unit that actually delivers.
How easy is it to winterize?
Here is from the FAQ page: www.acuvatech.com/faq/
How do I winterize my water purifier?
To ensure your system delivers quality water year round, please follow these recommendations for winterizing. (Note: Simply draining your water system may not be effective at removing enough water to prevent damage inside the device)
Step 1:
Remove the pre-filter from the system and set it on its end (outlet-down) to drain. Place the filter in a bag and store in a refrigerator or a cool environment until it’s time to flush and use it again.
Step 2:
OPTION A) APPLY COMPRESSED AIR.
Apply compressed air to the inlet of your unit to blow out any and all water trapped in the system as well as any accessories such as flow restrictors or faucets you may have. Repeat this a few times to ensure no water is left in the lines.
OPTION B) USE ANTIFREEZE REAGENT.
Follow your RVs owners manual to drain out your water lines and run special RV antifreeze through the system.
OPTION C) REMOVE & STORE AWAY.
If you do not have access to compressed air or antifreeze, remove the system and flow restrictor (if present) and store in a temperature controlled environment (>4°C) until ready to re-install.
Failure to winterize can results in damage to the system which is not covered by warranty, so please take care to winterize well before freezing temperatures or inclement weather may occur.
@@LoveYourRV what I don't understand if the filter is removed how do you pump air or antifreeze through the system if it is now disconnected from the water pipe by removing the filter first. Am I missing something here?
There is a shut-off valve installed on the shark bite T-fitting. I personally would just turn it to off and remove the Acuva stuff and drain water out of it. Put it back or take it inside your house. czcams.com/video/hgQCUzALokA/video.html Or you could take the pipe feeding the filter and instead feed it directly to the UV box and pump the antifreeze through. They are all easily removable quick connections.
I use a zero water filter for anything I'm going to drink. I made the mistake once of giving my dog tap water from a campground and man o man did he get the squirts. The poor guy has a more sensitive stomach than I do.
Great video Ray. Nice to see that New Brunswick sticker. Question. R U going to have a actual municipal water test done on the treated and non treated H2O?
Here is a video from the RVgeeks in 2018 where they had independent lab testing done with river water and known contaminated water - czcams.com/video/0qk0vycLYAs/video.html I imagine the newer model is as good or better than the tested model from back then. Cheers, Ray
I like those units. The only thing I don't like is that plastic tube line. How many kitchens have been flooded by ice maker lines like that. Lots! I would have to find some kind of proof that the tube is better quality. I am sitting in the heat with you pal. Hard to believe the forecast isn't it? I see the Tums in the background which tells us your still cooking. LOL just kidding it was too good to pass up.😜
haha, yeah! :)
My concern with these UV units is that the water doesn't stay under the UV's long enough to be actually made safe. Seems to be a bit of a murky area of 'science' vs 'advertising'.
Supposedly they use an optically focus beam - acuvatech.com/technology-uv-led/ Here is a deeper dive into the tech czcams.com/video/pVspJTsY0E8/video.html
I noticed in the marketing that they say for using with known good water as a secondary treatment so the water needs to be pretty good to start with. Likely the reason for the prefilter.
This is what the certifications say.
ArrowMAX 2.0 is certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 55 Class “B” for the supplemental bacterial treatment of disinfected public drinking water or other drinking water that has been tested and deemed acceptable for human consumption by the state or local health agency having jurisdiction. The system is only designed to reduce normally occurring non-pathogenic nuisance microorganisms. Class B systems are not intended for treatment of contaminated water. It is also certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 372.
Hi Ray........ This comment is actually a question ( nothing to do with this video) I have always wondered about what works better (faster ?) when you are Boondocking and have your generator running and hooked up to the RV, is the Generator Charging the RV Batteries? Would it be better to plug a battery charger directly into the Generator? And make it run directly to the batteries? Or is just plugged in to the RV and let the built in inverter/Charger do it’s thing ?
Incidentally, after watching your review (a few years ago) I purchased a Champion Generator just like yours...... you bought two of them
But I could only buy one at that time...... anyway, I hope I explained that correctly.......
in other words..... does a battery charger plugged directly to a generator work better than the built in inverter charger?
Yes, the generator will charge the batteries using the onboard charger just like being plugged in at the RV park. How well all depends on the quality of the charger and the wiring of the RV. There is a lot of variability in your question. Generally a poor quality battery charger hooked right to the generator will usually under preform the OEM RV onboard charger but a good quality converter charger wired close to the battery bank will often outperform the OEM setup.
I installed a Inteli-Power PD9260 60 amp charger right beside my battery bank and plug my generator into it and get much faster charging versus the OEM one installed 20 feet away under the stove in the kitchen. Its a better charger than the OEM and the wire losses are much reduced.
Here are a few videos on the subject:

Nice job and a Cansdian company. Is there any way you can test the water for impurities Ray? What about taste? I made a homemade Berkey using large carbon filters. Interested in your results...
Here is a video from the RVgeeks in 2018 where they had independent lab testing done with river water and known contaminated water - czcams.com/video/0qk0vycLYAs/video.html I imagine the newer model is as good or better than the tested model from back then. Taste seems great, but we have pretty good water here to start with. Cheers, Ray
@@LoveYourRV Glad to see there are alternatives and innovations! Thanks Ray! Stay away from Jet Fuel invigorated drinks Anne!!
$600 U.S. just to kill the bugs in the water? For thet money I'll just continue to dump a bag of good old fashioned DDT in my holding tank.
I haven't heard of that method. What is DDT?
No way that works.
Here is the company certifications page - acuvastore.com/pages/faq-certification
I found this video by the RV Geeks done with an older model in 2018 where they had a lab independently test river and contaminated water for bacterial removal. czcams.com/video/0qk0vycLYAs/video.html
600$ what...
So if you want the best and a company that stands behind their product then you may want to pass on this product. I had a professional installer put this product into my vehicle. Since the company was not an authorized installer they will not stand behind their product. If you install this yourself they will not stand behind their product. This install is not rocket science. I am a firm believer that when a product is faulty then the company should stand behind their product. For this unit to go bad and leak at this price point I would be very hesitant to purchase this. You don’t know till you know. So if you want to toss a good $500+ towards something, you might be better off investing in water bottles.
Wow, thanks for letting us know, kind of surprising. So far my only interaction with the company has been to buy a new filter last year using the online website ordering, shipping was fast no complaints there. I've had the system installed in our RV for 2 years and no issues. We are living in it full time and have travels about 10,000 miles in that times. All the best, Ray
