The LockPicking Lawyer Challenged Me: Pick This Lock Without Knowing What's Inside

- @lockpickinglawyer sent me a lock he modified, (kinda like a challenge lock of sorts) and thought I might have some fun trying to get it picked. He gave me a couple clues as to what was done inside, and so when it arrived I quickly got to work. It took me an hour to pick it and it was quite difficult to figure out at first. In this video, I show you my 3rd try at this lock.
At this point, I knew what modification was made and It still took me 9 minutes to get open. I kept resetting, and I fast forwarded through to my last reset so you didn't have to sit through 9 minutes of me silently picking a lock lol. I then gut the lock and show you what was done inside. This very simple modification made this lock a nightmare to pick.
LPL got his inspiration from the Hiines Key System sold by Segal in the 1960's and his variation of the HKS from his video:

Nice job. 👍 I knew you’d crush it!
One subtle thing you may have missed is that chambers 1-5 were reamed slightly oversized to 3.2mm. This forces pin 6 to bind first, which in turn makes avoiding the “trap” more difficult. That was needed because I wanted to keep chamber 6 standard to aid in smooth key insertion and removal.

I thought maybe there was some type of trickery, or you just placed the standard pin into whatever bound first. But that made it treacherous! Very well thought out mods. Thanks for offering me this awesome challenge, and thank you for watching!

It definitely was! Felt bad I couldn't talk through the picking like I normally do, but it took a lot of concentration on my part to be able to get this one open. Especially on camera. LPL sure knows how to make a rough lock! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! 😍😘🥰
As a locksmith, I remember the Hines Key System with smaller holes to fit the smaller T pin at 10 and 2 o’clock on the plug where the T pin (not picked high enough) would fall into the hole and permanently jamb the lock plug to its immediate death even to the lock owner with a key, as drilling it out was the only remedy. Hines also had an anti drill hardened plug face insert. Hines was sold in a bronze finish with the Segal rim drop lock. Very old school typical New York (ugly).
I never knew about it until he sent me this lock and I was checking out what the modifications on the Hines system was. That's a genius idea to be sure. And LPL's idea on this lock is great too because it makes it super pick proof (obviously not 100 percent) but most of the world could not pick that in the moment attached to someone's door. And in the end it doesn't ruin the lock either. It's amazing how LPL's mind works and how tough this small modification made this! I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! 😍😘🥰

Wow, over 50 years in the business, I’ve never seen anything like that, after your 2nd attempt, I would have used my pick gun and rake combo and maybe got lucky.

I know, I know.🥲This one was so freaking hard it took every bit of my concentration to get it picked. I probably would have been spouting nonsense if I tried to talk while trying to pick this one. But I do usually comment about what I'm feeling or at the very least complain about the lock 🤬🔒while I'm picking. 🤣
I apologize bc it really was a boring pick to watch. It sure wasn't boring picking it though and this lock could've easily kicked my butt. I mean LPL sent me this and challenged me, I HAD to show up for this one and get it done however I could.

I’ve watched way too many LPL videos apparently because I instantly wondered if he was going for the wafer and T-pin trap he recorded for his $1 security upgrade video. Regardless, congrats on the open. LPL was wise to collaborate with such a pillar of our community.
Awwww thank you man! That was so nice of you to say. I don't think I ever saw that prior to this lock, but LockChuck has sent me some evil locks that had some awful trench traps and whatnots in them. And so I had a feeling that was what was done on this one somehow. But I had no idea it was every single chamber and would be this tough to pick. Have you picked any setup like this? Wonder if there's a specific way to pick this bc I felt like an idiot just trying my best here and it was pretty rough 🤣😂. @@LadyLocks no. I haven't picked anything like this. Even with watching his previous video I mentioned, that ends with a bricking situation. So I wouldn't have gotten this open as quickly as you did here. Kudos!
@@senorsilky you'd have been able to do it, I had no idea what the heck was in here either and never tried one before. And if I can do it, you could definitely do it!
After reading where LPL got his inspiration for this challenge lock, I had a feeling it would use T pins that prevent the core from turning past a certain point...but I was puzzling over how he modified the core to do that without the lock permanently seizing up (both the Hines and his modded Kwikset would permanently seize if picked incorrectly). Very clever of him to take that approach!
I wanted to pick it without any knowledge of what was done inside. Took me an hour. But I got it done. It was very clever indeed. LPL's a pretty smart dude. Thanks for watching!
I had the same thoughts. Very cool how he managed to modify it to not brick.
I got my best friend and I beginner kits from Covert Instruments for Xmas. We both ended up needing our rakes pretty quickly; prior to getting our kits we would have just cut the locks off. Having a non-destructive alternative is great, even if all we can handle at present is Masterlock.

When you mentioned "Hines" I wondered how you'd avoid bricking it. Slotting for the wafers was sneaky as was the slightly enlarged pin chambers as you had to set 6 before getting any feedback from the rest. Now imagine some security pins thrown in the mix- ZOWIE! 😮That would make for a very Harry picking experience 😉😂

So maybe I'll name all the picks from my Genesis set: the short hook will be Frodo, the long hook, Samwise (I think he was a bit taller).
The quad rake: Saruman, the quint: Gandalf (the rakes are wizardly). I added two decoder knifes so that's Merry and Pippin. I've also got their ergo combs stuffed in the case so that's Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli! Violá !

Very creative by LPL to use the hines key system to inspire this unique design... i can definitely see some lock manufacturers starting to do this.
Ps. Technically, the modification that was made to the plug is called "milling", in this case, I believe it would be considered a version of overmilling

What a clever way to modify the lock for more security. Well done getting the open. The locks looks really good with the CI engraved on it. This is a lock that will go down in locksport history as the first CI by LPL that LL has picked, cheers

A semi stock lock challenge 😳. Nicely done to get past that! A lot of fun there ✌🏻🌶

Some standard attacks I believe you should subject any lock someone sends before you even try picking, in no particular order:
1. Rake attack.
2. Hammer test: Test lock's ability to withstand a standard quality hammer blow applied to the lock.
3. Bypass attack. If LPL would use it to bypass the pins, you should try that too.
Please note that these are written without knowledge or experience of how they work, but if LPL himself would use them, you should subject any further locks he'd send you to the same standard attacks he would use. Additionally please note that you should only do these if you want to, If you don't want to, I have no issue with that.😀
It is customary when you receive a challenge lock that the only thing you are permitted to do is single pin pick it. This lock belongs to LPL and I’ve got to return it, so I do not want to damage it in any way. I trust that he tested it in whichever ways he wanted after he created it. Plus the challenge he asked of me was to single pin pick it without knowing what modification was done to it. I wouldn’t want to anger LPL by damaging his lock in any way. One small correction, I said there was no milling in there but I meant there was no threading. Sorry about that guys lol. I was just so happy to get it open I was messing up what I was saying!
Well there was no counter-milling (undercut) so you were right about that. How do the master wafers measure up with the depths of those side cuts? Are the wafers about twice the thickness of the cut depths?
@@penfold7800I'm not exactly sure on the wafers, but they were very thin. I should've measured them. I bet LPL knows exactly what size they were. The key was so smooth though and it was very very tricky to pick! I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment my friend!

I do usually talk through what I'm picking and sometimes it's very colorful lol. This one was not gonna get picked if I tried to talk it out. This lock took every ounce of my concentration. quite interesting, I think I remember seeing a video on a lock like this before and can't remember if it was a CL or a factory design. definitely something that will trip you up, if not expecting it and of course this has gabe birth to ideas using this in tandem with other mods. LPL has ran across numerous locks and has opportunities to see things that we may not see nor remember if covered prior. there's just so much that can be done to a lock. anyways 🎉🎉 on getting the open. remember the googly eyes 👀 of pressure are always watching 👀👀👀👀

This one took all my concentration just to be able to get open. Couldn't fail at a challenge from LPL. Lol. Promise I talk through most every lock I pick that isn't this treacherous. In fact, I just posted an ASSA 600 that was cursed and I was able to do the whole .. nothing on one .. for that one. I've got one of those covert instruments practice locks. Mine is loaded with only 3 standard pins. It is a tough one. I can pick American Lock 1100 and abus 72/40 and even got open an paclock 900. But for some reason I always have trouble with this practice lock. Also sparrow's 4 pin lock too.
These ones have pretty good tolerances and can be tricky to pick without any mods. You'll get the hang of it, it just takes a lot of practice! You're doing great from all the locks you've been picking so I'm sure you'll be breezing through the rest soon as well! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!

I usually do comment while picking. But there was nothing on any of these ones, I had to basically force all of these into place while holding the tension in the perfect spot. It took all my concentration to pick this one I couldn’t even swear at it while picking it (& believe me I wanted to) 😂🤣😂 No, but sorry bout that it was indeed boring to watch! Those seem to be very simple (and cheap?) modifications to make, which also seemed to have quite an impact on the resistance to picking; not that I know anything I have a hrad enough time using a lock when I have the key ...! But then I don't have Lock Picking Sauron peeking over my shoulder 😁

Can you update your link to: Adaptor for the base to small rig ? not sure what to get here.
Those are 3d printed bases and the file for them is called the "mini Chuck vice" and it's up on thingaverse. You just have to find someone that can 3d print you one and tell them what it's called and they can access the file on thingaverese. @eschlenz can do it for you he sells them already made in all kind of colors.

Ah the small rig adaptor is just a bolt that comes up through the 3d printed ball joint that comes out of the base of the 3d printed vice. I'll check with lock chuck to see what size it is. Or are you looking for the adaptor for the Panavise to the small rig?

Am I right in thinking that if someone tried to pick this lock and caused it to jam then the key would no longer work?
On any lock, you can run the risk of jamming it up by picking it and if that happens the key wouldn't work. If there were secondary holes drilled into the core on this one where if you were picking it and the core turns, those t pins could fall into those holes it would seize up the lock making the key useless because the lock would be bricked at that point. This lock didn't have those secondary holes drilled into it though, and so doesn't run that risk how it's set up now. But these particular modifications make this lock extremely hard to pick, especially if you have no idea what was done to it. So it still makes it rough for anyone to come along and pick it but you'd still be able to use your key as long as they didn't do too much damage inside the lock while trying to pick it.

I know. It was a boring pick to watch, but I was stunned speechless by the difficulty of this lock. Plus in the back of my mind LPL was gonna watch this and I better get it open! That whole speechless thing doesn't happen often either! 😂🤣 I usually do talk through all my picks or at the very least complain or yell at the lock. Sometimes I've even sang to them to try and get them to cooperate. Eh well, I got it open and I'm thankful for the challenge he offered me and glad I didn't fail! I appreciate you watching! 🥰❤️😍😘

Point 4 was no security key pins. The T-pins are actually security driver pins. But the key pins in this lock are actually just standard key pins. 😍🥰

It truly is! I had to basically float pick the entire thing. When I first picked it I had no clue what was in there and it was terribly difficult. Once I saw what was in there it was still terribly difficult! Thank you so much for watching!
