Me too! I have a filter and everything that circulates the water pretty heavily. I got sick of seeing it so I completely changed the water. Nothing else I did got rid of it :( Hoping this will help!
@@ViosSlays get an air stone if you can! I used to deal with bio films no matter what filter i used or how ontop of water changes I was, the airstone was such a game changer I haven’t had any since 😊

Another way to get rid of it which does not involve chemicals is to just float a piece of newspaper over it for a few seconds. When you lift the paper off it takes the film with it.
isnt a Paper towels bertter than newspaper? I was always afraid the ink of paper might get in water column.
@@urbansk8r231 There is an element of risk to both I suppose. Newspaper may well leave something behind due to the ink but equally kitchen paper is likely to be bleached. I have never used kitchen paper, only newspaper. I would have thought that kitchen paper would instantly become waterlogged if you put it on the water surface. Newspaper remains pretty much intact and only removes a minimal amount of water.
Well i guess it's not a big issue. The last time i had that happen was when i first started. So i always look for the rout of the problem, and resolve that. Otherwise it's just a band solution. So a little tds aint so bad. If the ink was really effecting the fish their behaviour would let you know. And you can always water change it out. So i'll take your word for it. No matter how long you've been in this hobby, you can always learn new things or a better more efficient way of doing thing. 👊
@@urbansk8r231 no DO NOT use paper towels as it is a dye based sheet of basically paper thus meaning it it not safe for use in an aquarium.
If you are using it quickly then i dont think there is any risk involved but its just if you are using it long term.
andy stokes, an dylan 15 lodge, thanks for you concern and showing me a safer way. Mine wasnt as bad as the vid (no chunky bits- just film) i solved it with Surface Agitation, an an ehiem 400 air pump and a differ that came wth it. Also i have a power head on my internal filter.

Beka Whalen ... what do you clean the inside of your tank with? I just use a clean sponge for the inside to remove any "brown" deposits.

It's always that my betta tank has it with the filter yet my Jarrarium with absolutely no circulation and zero water changes doesn't have this.
I have this in my betta tank however betta really hate high flow so I am really hesitant in increasing the flow. As bettas breathe air on the surface would mine actually be affected by this?
A simple bubbler is the easy and effortless answer to this problem.
Whenever I get biofilm buildup, I always just stick an airstone into the tank and walk away. The film will be completely gone within a few hours, and all I had to do was plug in my airpump.
You don't need to use chemicals or buy a special filter or waste paper towels or anything like that. All you need is the cheapest air pump you can buy.
You can remove this by slowly lowering a container in to the water and skimming of the surface. You should see the film flow in to the container.
I like this video. I have a new betta and put a sponge over the outflow of my filter to reduce any current for him, but I think what’s contributing to this is the live plant I put in. My siphon changing of the water didn’t help so I tried to skim it off with a tea strainer but that wasn’t very effectual either. Probably gonna do another skim and remove the plant I put it. Thanks for this video, very informative!
Very fortuitous timing because i have this going on in my scape right now. Usually it happens in my set up around 6 weeks after the filter has been cleaned and the flow becomes considerably slower. I've always just taken it as a sign the filter needs cleaning without fully understanding what it actually is.

My bettas tanks have super low flow because thats how they seem to like it so i used to run into this problem all the time. I just turn the air stone on for an hour when i wake up each morning to get rid off the small amount that builds up every day. Works really well for me
Is the hydrogen peroxide safe to spray in the aquarium like that if you have fish and shrimp?

I also want to know if hydrogen peroxide is ok if fish are in tank and if food grade hydrogen peroxide is ok in 3% mix

You’ve posted this literally a week after I got some MAJOR film. Like the film was so thick you couldn’t see through it
I have a thin layer all the time from excess nutrients, because the plants haven't caught up yet. It is not a big problem, because oxygen is present to a degree it is saturated in the water.
It traps O2 in the water to some degree as well as CO2, but it is not a big deal in general.
Some part of it is made of dust caught on the surface by my cooling fans.
This just helped me solve a problem with my two 3.8 gal. betta tanks that was driving me nuts. Thank you!

Just have water flowing DOWN breaking the surface. Like, if your filter output is under the water, connect a litle hose pipe upwards with zip ties. Let it fall into the water. It made a massive difference to my tank :)
Should it be pretty loud?(the water hitting the..water 🤣). I just let out enough water that the water flow from the filter is now outside of the water in the tank.
I have my molly fry separated in a mesh net in my main tank and it’s only on that area where it’s blocked off. I can’t move the fry any closer. Any ideas?

My recent video is building a planted black water tank for a betta and I noticed today that it has this on it. There is a low flow filter in the tank but the surface has some frogbit and duckweed and this has pretty much taken up the open space. Any natural cure for this?
I'd like to try using a skimmer, yet I have no idea how am I supposed to use it... Should I attach it to a pump or something?
if you had a tank with fish, would the hydrogen peroxide hurt them?

The amount he sprayed is probably just fine for fish. A little spray won’t harm them
Don’t do too much because it will if you overspray, it will, but keep it small enough of a dose, it should work just fine.
@@isaacbailey3681 yes I'm one of those people I'm very hesitant of really adding anything I don't have to to the tank. That's why I was so skeptical of people saying you could do hydrogen peroxide. I just figured any of the chemical would be very harmful to the fish so seeing this video, it piqued my interest a bit
Very informative. firstly don't but submersed plants that can carry all sorts of nasties. Emersed plants are the only way to go. The Eheim surface skimmer can be a big help and you can share it around tanks. It clears in seconds. I also agree with an airstone, why these simple things have last favor has me puzzled.
The only time I have experienced this is when I don't run lids on my tanks. Any tank with no lid on will develop this over time, but if I have the lids on I have zero issues.

What about the lids that have that backspace for a filter. I guess i have one but it's a shorter lid then the 12 inch tank (width)

Is that film bad? I get that when my water level gets too low and the plants block circulation at the surface. My gourami makes bubble nests in it. It goes away when I put more water in the tank and the filter moves the water at the surface, it kind of bums the fish out though.
Thanks for sharing this! I thought this was a good thing (biofilm) when I saw it forming in my snail reject tank. Can I still spray H2O2 on a small body of water (2gal) or should I remove it manually?

safe as long as it ddnt directly sprayed on your fish eye altho spray it away from yourfilter it kills fungi and bactera including good bacteria the waste product is Water and Oxygen.

Where do you get your plants from and would you possibly know what plants Koi and Fan Tails won't eat? They ate all the lily pads.
That's food to some varieties of fish. Its natural. Forms on all water surfaces but agitation usually pushes it to the sides where it accumulates at the waterline or is eaten by biofilm loving fish. Hillstream loaches love the stuff as do some snails. I'm seen snails crawl along this stuff along the underside of the surface enjoying this stuff. No idea how they do it but its interesting to watch. It does reduce O2 absorption though so a bubbler is a good solution to keep this stuff pushed to the sides. All still water has this. If you see still water but think you're not seeing this stuff, get a bit of dish soap on the tip of your finger and touch the surface with it. You'll immediately see it separate away from the soap.

Can peroxide be used on a tank with fish?
short answer, yes, sparingly.
I use it on occasion to combat black beard algae. using a 10cc syringe with a 6" piece of air tube for reach. not sure what the limit is. i'm cautious not to overdo it.
My 85 g has lots of circulation, but no surface agitation, and I get film weekly. I skim it out with a 2 liter bottle. I'll sink the bottle at an angle and let the surface water slowly drain into the bottle. Two bottles full usually clears it.

I have white cotton substance coming from my aquarium filter every time I plug it back in after a water change. What’s that ?
Must be white fungus. Did you get rid of it? I recently had it and started fresh after transferring fish to another tank. Bleached and rinsed everything.
You just need to have some current in the tank and that will prevent it. Don't need loads of surface movement.

For immediate remedy if you dont have airstone to agitate the surface yet, use a plastic flexible cup and press together to make a spout or v shape. Push against surface enough so that only the surface water and film goes in. Try to do it in a corner of the tank and the film should flow right in. Then get your air stone and use it to try your best to make the water flow in cyclical fashion back to the intake filter.
Take a sheet of printer paper and skim it across the surface flip it over and do the other side.
Just a quick life hack for you. If you have this for whatever reason, just lay down paper towel on top and then just take it off

yes, a few sprays on the top is harmless, however if you add a lot directly into the tank it can burn the fish.
Such little dosing generally is harmless for fish. Regarding Shrimps on the other hand, i would be a lot more careful with using hydrogen peroxid
I use peroxide to kill duckweed. Never had them effect my fish

How do you deal with all of your tanks not having tops on them? I have 2 without tops and I swear I'm refilling them almost every other day because you can't hear the TV for all of the aquarium waterfall noise.

I find this happens a lot more when its warm in my tank room in the summer months (about 26C), also my moss almost dies off at this time. In winter I keep the room at about 19 degrees and dont get it and the moss looks good again
I have a sponge and a internal filter and I get pretty good movement but this stuff is still building up

That happened to me awhile ago, i wasn't sure what it was so i tried the paper towel thing and it didn't work, i then added a air pump that would push the water around nothing happened immediately but after some time and couple of water changes it went away and now i have a air stone so i don't think it will happen again.

Hey Mike I had a question. Ok looking to switch my 40b from a non planted tank to a low tech setup but I’m stuck on substrate choices. Debating between a dirt bottom with a sand cap or using an aquasoil. My big question tho is
Which choice will leach the least amount of ammonia? I don’t have an extra tank to keep the inhabitants so they will need to go back into the tank after a little while. Will this be safe or should I look into a tub or something to keep them in for a little while?
Go with brightwell substrate, no nh3 leach. Its also easier to move stuff aroumd later on compared to using dirt

When you add the hydrogen peroxide, do you dilute the already diluted 3% solution, or do you use it at that concentration? I have this beginning in my aquariums, but I'm always curious to know what I'm adding so I don't disturb my system too greatly. Always dilute. Around 1.5ml per gallon (4.5litres)
Use a calculator online to ensure you get the volume correct
