Nadav Drewe well technically most of the stuff he’s covered for WoW is released, they are released sample chapters. There’s a few snippets fans grabbed off computer screens and readings but the majority were released by Martin and his publisher as a teaser for WoW to sate the fans appetites. So no he hasn’t been covering unreleased stuff, at least not extensively.

Derfelkardan the work that elio and Linda does deserves much respect... but it's kinda easy to criticize and write in a world someone else has created.. I totally agree on the plot knots I've been saying for years he opened up too many new plots that need closing .. every chapter in dance leaves us on a cliffhanger and none of the sample chapters say nothing of the 2 big deaths at the end. And there's been 9 samples I believe around 200 or so pages.. that's a lot of pages without hearing of kevan Lannister or Jon.

I disagree that Lorra Royce would have had a harder time in the North than Catelyn did. We know that the Royce are descendants of the First Men and were known as the Bronze Kings in the Vale. We know that they fought against the Andal invaders but were eventually defeated. And I believe we can assume that the Royce remember the Old Way and the Old God if they still don't follow them. The words of House Royce are "We Remember", remember what? I always thought that it is referencing the ways of the First Men.
It seems the house Royce hold some reverence to the First Men, they wear bronze armor adorned with runes of the first men. Ser Waymar Royce left the Vale to join the Night's Watch, an interesting choice for a young southern knight when we know that few in the south hold the Night's Watch in high regard. We also know that Yohn Royce wanted the Vale to commit forces to Robb Stark's cause. Whether this is because Yohn and Eddard were friendly or because Yohn's disgust of the Lannisters or something more. I always thought it was somewhat suspicious that House Royce kept showing up all over the story. We have Waymar in the Night's Watch, Robar off with Renly, and we had Kyle Royce as a friend of Brandon Stark who was killed by Aerys.
Preston if you read this I am curious of your thoughts about Edric Dayne. I doubt there is enough material there to do a full video but I find the character intriguing. I feel that he might have been planed to take up Dawn and become the Sword of the Morning after the five year time skip but since that was tossed aside I can't think of any reason he is in the story. Unless that is his purpose, to throw readers off and give us something to ponder.
The Royces definitely follow the Faith of the Seven. The house is filled with knights.
As for Edric, I'm not sure his function. It could be as simple as a chance to tell a little bit of the Ashara and Starfall story. It's tough to say. GRRM has been super tight lipped about Daynes.

Even a month later, after having watched this a good 20 times, I'm still really impressed with this, and, I feel like more or less this is the story GRRM has in mind!
Do you think that Sara Snow's bastard child with Jace could be involved in this story somehow? Fire & Blood seems to hint that they had a relationship and I think that the "clutch" of eggs left behind at Winterfell could have been a Targ fetus. I could imagine Egg running into his distant relative in Winterfell.

One thing that came to mind seeing that family tree: what happened to all of the Starks? Are there no male cousins named Stark left by the time GoT starts? And by A Dance With Dragons with everyone assumed dead there's a fake Arya, but you'd think there might be real cousins being maneuvered around like pawns with Winterfell in ruins. Maybe I just missed something.

My mind warps a little bit that GRRM can have this much planned out years in advance. But the family trees are there, and the fan comments. it's just mind boggling.
What really amazes me is that he can obviously have so much planned so far ahead and yet still manage to need 8+ years to put out Winds. Hell, he wrote the Mercy chapter almost 20 years ago and we still dont have the book it's supposed to be in!
I‘m not sure all of this is necessarily planned, more like George comes up with all these little tidbits slowly over time and in the end the story is more or less formed. Could be he looked at the family tree and noticed there were a bunch of widows at Winterfell at the same time and he thought „wouldn‘t that make for an interesting story?“. Hopefully some day he‘ll actually get to tell it.
He admits that not all of it is pre-planned. On occasion he'll run into a continuity error for which a couple friends/fellow authors help him ghost write or fact check. A World of Ice and Fire is written primarily by these two individuals.
It's a combination of planning, seeing where the story so far and the natural consequences of motovations and worldbuilding lead.
He likely jots down an idea that interests him as far as the Dunk and Egg novellas are concerned, and then he either works on it bit by bit or waits to finish one large project before devoting his time to D&E so it could be that this comes to him piecemeal, or he sits down and plans it out when Winds gives him writer's block.
The consideration about Old Nan's age is of paramount importance and puts to bed a vast quantity of theories regarding Ser Duncan and Nan imagined romance!...
In some way there's a connection when the statures of Dunc and Hodor are taken into account, so if a genetic bond is present, it cannot be direct!...
I mean, if Hodor is a Ser Duncan descendant, it appears Old Nan had probably to interact with a descendant of the tall knight!

No doubt I'll be lynched for saying this, but wouldn't it be better if George had a co-author to help him finish his to-do list - at least if Gods forbid he dies we'll have a chance of seeing The She-Wolves of Winterfell with said co-author picking up George's pen.

Lionstar16 you’re absolutely right, if he got people to help him write AWOIAF then why not have someone co-author his other works? He obviously has too many ideas for his own good and cannot stay writing one story at a time, but it’s getting fucking ridiculous at this stage
It's a good idea, but each writer has their own writing style and with someone like GRRM who isn't really open to outside ideas for his novels, it would probably delay the future books even more, granted the dunk and egg tales are shorter than the ASOIAF books but GRRM loves dropping clues into those stories that foreshadow future events in the main series. That said, we can't rule out the possibility of it happening either, though I wouldn't hold my breath for the Southron Sword (aka The She wolves of winterfell) having a coauthor

Preston, have you heard about a friend of George, who did an interview somewhere, stating that George asked her whether or not she has ever had the experience of "...killing off a character that you now realize you needed...?"?
George stated that he was stuck with this issue. She asked him about how his writing has been going...This was about The Winds of Winter. Now, the friend did not state WHEN George asked her this, or when this conversation took place. It could have been YEARS ago for all I know... She just said this in passing. I just want to bring this to your attention, in case you did not know.......
This is perhaps like the Mereenese knot problem for A Dance with Dragons that took George YEARS to undo... Thoughts?

Emma J. Quinn It would be really interesting to know when he said that. For all we know he could have meant Catelyn, which he resolved. Though my guess would be he meant Oberyn because he is pretty important and probably can't be resurrected as his brain is pudding.
Interesting. Lady Stoneheart did seem like a contrived forced plot development to me, and I was puzzled as to why he'd undo such a good death. Oberyn does make more sense. But geez this series is so full of characters who *seemed* to have an important purpose but died. GRRM really likes to undermine the idea that everyone has a destiny. :-(

I think this family tree will play a role later in ASOIAF. Think about it, we already have tons of Riverland Houses with no male heirs. Plus, heavy casualties among many House throughout Westeros. By the end of the wars for the Iron Throne, Dawn and who knows what else; few of these houses will remain. This means we will be seeing weak claims turn into strong ones. Any thoughts on that?

As always - another truly excellent analysis Preston. I've been awaiting the "She Wolves" for several years and like everyone else we are simply at the mercy of George's glacial writing pace. Years ago George also mentioned in a Q&A that after "She Wolves" the working title for his 5th Dunk and Egg story was "The Village Hero" and involved an adventure Dunk & Egg get into on their journey back south through the Riverlands. I wonder if you have heard anything about this mysterious 5th story or what it might entail?

19:40 - Maybe the way they convince her to move passed her hatred of Lonnel Snow is by finding out that he's not really a bastard son of her late husband. Lonnel IS built up as a Jon Snow parallel seemingly. So it wouldn't be too crazy to think that maybe he too was not really a bastard but somehow "adopted" by his father as such for some reason. A bit blatant maybe, but not crazy either.
Now I really want GRRM to write this story just to see whether Preston is right!

Old Nan arrived to Winterfell after Dunk's visit. And Bran's Winterfell visions are about Starks not other people so Preston theorising the girl with Dunk is Arsa Stark makes more sense, and the pregnant lady wanting vengeance would be Serena Stark.

Honestly I think it's more likely we'll get another Dunk and Egg story than Winds of Winter. GRRM seems more interested in doing side stories/projects than the main thing. Since A Dance with Dragons he's released A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, A World of Ice and Fire, The Lands of Ice and Fire, and in November Fire and Blood will be released.
Preston, do you think there would be any hint in this story to what's going on with the Blackfyres? Dunk and Egg novellas seem to be involved with them and with the Targaryens in one way or the other.

Couldn’t Dunk have meet a girl named Nan (a girl from Brans perspective would be a girl, say 10).... that girl kisses him in front of a heart tree.... he tells her that he is to old for her.... Dunk returns to the North 22 Year’s later after delivering Blood-raven to the wall... meet a older Nan, now 32... they get busy.... have a kid.... that kid has kid (Hodor).... then dies is Roberts rebellion when he is in his 50’s.
Hodor was her grandson.

I fear that you may be right, however, about GRRM finishing everything, so I appreciate this work for yours. It will be a great read if GRRM ever finishes and releases it.
I agree, but this is reaching a certain level and Martin himself should be concerned by the reconstructions Mr Jacobs is developing. With info and analysis there are lots of things one can do, Mr Jacobs is like some professors, you never stop enjoying this kind of insight. Thank you Preston, and I insist, you may reach a perilous level of analytic «foresight» for the author and his ouvre, and that could be fun to see. I can argue that Lorra Royce may keep to the Old Gods since its hinted that the Royces and Blackwoods are among the few houses south of the Neck that still follow the Old Gods. There have been other Stark/Royce matches which leads me to believe in this theory. As for Old Nan, I agree with your statements....IF Old Nan isn't a Stark. I believe she is actually either Alyssane or Berena Stark. Both of them Lorra's daughters. Eddard Stark stated that no one actually remembers when Old Nan came to the castle except that she was there to care for Brandon Stark. Do bear in mind that what I'm saying is still speculative for the heck of it because its just interesting like that lol

You can be wrong about more than half of this but it is still very impressive to be able to infer all that you did from the scant information you had. I like the idea of the bastard that is part crannogmen using skinboats to mess up the ironborn, and Egg and Ronnel Stark becoming friends. Kudos

Error on Serena and Sansa Stark in the family tree according to GRRM. Sansa is the eldest sister, Serena is the youngest.

I'm starting to notice a pattern here, Martin wrote 3 ASOIAF books in a timely manner then they started taking forever, later he wrote three Dunk and Egg books but the fourth is perpetually unfinished. Sounds like Martin would be better off sticking to Trilogies.

Preston, to connect this to your other series on the genetics of the starks and sacrifice, there has to be someone making sure that the women don't take their seat. One of the houses which are more interested in prophecy, have to be making plots to keep men in power. It might even be that they have a hand in the continual rebellions, if rallying the north is the way they keep women from power. Additionally they would likely be the ones who suggest marrying the young women to Stark uncles, in a bid to be trying to create better warg genetics.
