Kamikaze Attack - Battle of Okinawa

  • US Naval Task Force 58 in deadly combat against Japanese aircraft off the Ryukyu Islands during the Battle for Okinawa. Over 1,400 Kamikazes attacked day and night for three months in a desperate attempt to cripple and destroy a large number of Allied vessels and slow their advance on the Japanese home islands. Aircraft carriers were their prime target. ⁣

I edited this video together with footage from the 1945 short propaganda film “The Fleet That Came To Stay”. The music is Shepard Risetone by Soundborne. The continually ascending pitch creates endless rising tension. I thought it was fitting for such a staggering spectacle. ⁣

“At the very moment of impact: do your best. Every deity and the spirits of your dead comrades are watching you intently. Just before the collision it is essential that you do not shut your eyes for a moment so as not to miss the target. Many have crashed into the targets with wide-open eyes. They will tell you what fun they had.”⁣

From a purely military point of view some may question the use of Kamikaze but when one considers that by that time Japan had mostly inexperienced flyers and that there was very little chance of survival in a conventional attack, not to mention a very low chance of achieving any hits, it made tactical sense.

My dad who passed in 2017 at 92 was on the USS Louisville CA 28 from 1943-46 and he witnessed (52) sailors along with Rear Admiral Theodore Chandler buried at sea due to (3) kamikaze hits in the Pacific. (1) 8 inch 55 caliber gun turret knock out of commision - currently, found in 2016 in Nevada Desert. God bless our service men and service women - past and present. Kamikaze was Japan's last source and the closer the U.S. Fleet got to Japan the more Kamikaze they saw. The Kamikaze were taught to aim for the bridge of the warships to get as many officers as possible.

Japanese pilots who went for kamikaze missions are mostly well educated ppl. They understood all surrounding situations and did what they thought it would be the best for his family and society. Americans would do the same if they faced similar situations. World War II air naval battles were just that insane and chaotic. Planes getting shot down like flies, the ship crew running around to aid the pilots that barely survived their sorties, firefighters trying to extinguish the fire on the carrier, kamikazes among other chaotic stuff, also most of these things happened at the same time. My uncle was there, a signalman on destroyer escort USS Tatum. He was high up on the mast when a kamikaze strafed the ship and he heard the slugs pattering all around him. Then a bomb fell straight through the deck and lodged unexploded in the ward room, having to be removed later. Getting back to Pearl Harbor he saw other US ships towed in with every last bit of their superstructure, guns etc. blown away---nothing left but flat-decked hulls.

We must keep foremost in mind the historical fact that air raids on Japan during World War II, causing extensive destruction to the country's cities and killing hundreds of thousands of citizens, led the youths to such an extraordinary decision whether good or bad. You cannot blame their aggression and tragic conclusion. I hear that they left notes to their family they wish to protect. How sad. War brings nothing...

Certainly an Alaska class. Both Alaska and Guam were at Okinawa but I believe that was most likely Alaska.

@@lawrencewestby9229 Good catch! My dad (1923- 2013) was on the Alaska from August 1944 to August 1945. He and I have looked at this video frame by frame and tried to match the ack ack bursts with pictures of this attack in his USS Alaska cruise book. Some of the odd looking ack ack bursts in the video match the pictures in the book. He and I were very confident that it was the USS Alaska after we completed our examination.
