There's a softness in the round brush strokes which becomes a crisp, almost severe feeling with the dagger strokes in the petals.
I have your brush set and I use the dagger, mostly for leaves. But it feels so awkward to me. I have no problem making leaves on the right side of a stem, but the left side is just awkward. I can't figure out how to hold the brush. Maybe a super slow demonstration would help: This is how I hold it, twist it, etc, slow motion. Lol I'll add that I'm fairly new to watercolor.
Yes I can do a slower demo! Also try the other, more always side of the leaf using the opposite direction stroke. So if you started with a downstroke, finish the other side with an upstroke. Also a bit of a twist of your fingers as you drag and slowly lift can help!!
I have two dagger brushes which I’ve never used since I always reach for my rounds. Now, I will be playing with my dagger brushes to see all they can do. Thank you for this comparison video
You’re very welcome!
I love the showdowns!
Thank you Kristy! I have recently found your tutorials and I really like your style! Thanks for sharing your talent and personality with us!
You’re welcome!!
I just cannottttttt get fully on the dagger brush train. You will need to REALLY convince me in this showdown, girl! I have your brush set and I am def gonna try this myself to compare!
Okay!! Let me know how it goes!!
@@KristyRice update - I still don’t love it and I’m frustrated with trying to make consistent strokes, but I do love the personality the dagger brush gives flower petals!
Gurl, I hope you did get on that dagger brush train! I've been riding ever since! lol
Thanks for the comparison and demos on how to use the brushes. I enjoy using your brushes best.
You’re welcome! So glad you’re enjoying the brushes!
So awesome the flow of the dagger love them .
I’m actually in love with your small cat’s tongue brush from your set!
Yay!!! It was a surprise favorite!!
I'm new to the Dagger Brush and played with it today. Boy, I love all the variety of different marks I can make with it! I'm eager to play with it some more and learn this brush.
Glad you enjoy it!
I’m so glad you did this video. I love how you use the dagger and started trying to learn your ways. But I like the round brush leaves and flower better.
Nothing wrong with an awesome round brush!!
I have always been a round brush devote until my husband bought me this set just recently for my birthday and the cats tongue is my absolute favorite but I am loving the quarter inch dagger it is a little bit of a learning curve adjusting to it but it is so fun to see the marks they make!
Yay!! Awesome gift!! XO
Just bought your brush set, very excited! It will be a long but worth it wait to get to Australia. Thanks so much Kristy.
Hope you like it!
I tried the Black Velvet Silver brushes in rounds after watching several artists paint beautifully with them and I gotta say I was disappointed. The round you have looks nice. The Black Velvet Silver brushes look bushy to me and don’t make a nice point. I have gotten a set of daggers since watching you paint gorgeous flowers, something I long to do. I have yet to try them though since I have recently moved and have to put my house together. Ugh! But you inspire me and I will try playing with them this week.😊❤
Definitely try those daggers!!
I am hooked on your videos! You are a fantastic resource!
Thank you so much!
I love using the dagger! Glad to hear from you!
Wahoo!!
I just bought your set from Amazon and I'm so excited! I did have to search for them because the above link took me to other people's brushes 😳but searched and found your set ❤
De the dagger I just tried it a few days ago and I love it! I now understand your love affair with the dagger lol!
It’s amazing right??
Love them both, love your channel!!
Thank you!!
Thank you! 🎨🖌️
Let us know when they are back in stock! Can't wait to try them out. Wonderful videos and art!
Will do I promise!!
@@KristyRice when can I order the brush
I just bought my first dagger brush because of you. I’m looking forward to playing with it
Hope you enjoy it!
I do like this kind of video. It helps beginners not waste money on buying every brush in the store. I also love when artist use a “non traditional” brush. I was actually shocked when Jenna used the filbert. But it was so good to see. I have used the dagger (your brand) and am still trying to master it. But I do love it. I make my leaves exclusively with the dagger.
Yes all of this yes :)
I just got your 1/4 dagger and girl, I cannot drive this brush yet 😂. But it's good to be out of my comfort zone and it is so fun to make shapes with.
Hahaha drive!! You will get there. There is def a learning curve
The round brush is easier for me to use, but your dagger brushes make some of the most beautiful and different marks. My problem is that I don't know which way to hold the dagger, when painting leaves and petals.
Most often I’m holding it curved edge down at a variety of angle… about 30% angle to the page most often ❤️
Ok you have made me a believer. Im gonna try a dagger. I appreaciate your instruction.
Thanks!!
Dagger looks more precise just ordered one in I love ur tutorials ur work is fun and amazing 👏 💖 💗
Thank you!!
You got me convinced I want to try a dagger now thanks for the great video
You’re very welcome!!!
Just bought your brushes and How to Make Art for Joy's Sake book. I have only skimmed the book and tried my hand at the dagger brush a couple times. I have to say neither the book nor brushes have disappointed me. Definitely going to need practice on the dagger brush but love the results I have got with my first couple attempts. Thank you so much for sharing your joy of love and art! My motto Live Life Joyously
Wonderful to hear!! Great motto!
There's a book? Okay, gotta go find it!
I like both brushes. Since I got your lovely brush set, I've been really practicing the dagger brush. I have gotten so much better at using it. It really takes some practice because it was a brush that I haven't been familiar with at all. I'm having so much fun !
Wonderful!
I agree I just got ur set to day... So to make a fair comment I must learn the dagger brush. Any Videos? thanks
For your whimsical fun style suits the dagger works wonderfully, but I would not dare to use it on more serious paintings.
I love my #8 round, but I just ordered your free from fear set. To be honest, I have never tried the dagger, so I am looking forward to both the #12 round and the 3/4 and 1/8 daggers in the set.
Awesome!!
this came just the perfect time. i recently got myself a dagger brush by roman szmal and wasn't sure how to use it. thanks for sharing!
Well there ya go!! Enjoy!!
I don't have an opinion yet on which brush I like but do like seeing the comparison and review videos!
Awesome glad it was helpful!
I really love the dagar, at least what you do. I am a beginner, and I have not tried one yes.
Your paintbrushes are in stock on Amazon! Just checked, just bought them 😊 thank you so much, I’m so excited! 😍
Wahooo!!
Running out today to find a dagger brush! Been wanting to add one to my tool box.. Thanks!
You bet!!
I'm team round! Synthetic with lots of snap. Specifically Pentel Aquash line
Ordered your brush set last year, and your dagger and the liner brush have been my ride or dies since! Lol
Love it!!!
You are pumping out the content! Love it. Wish your brushes were available as separates, I’d be willing to give the stubbier dagger a try. The one I have is a bit of a one hit wonder,
The 1/4 inch dagger is available alone on kristyrice.com :)
Glenda, I, too, wish Kristy's brushes were sold separate. I'd buy the daggers immediately. I have so many other brushes, just don't need more of those shapes and sizes!
I love a dagger I have a short and 3/8 . The variety of strokes is unique always beautiful. It did take me sometime to get used to it tho compared to rounds
Yes the dagger has a somewhat steeper learning curve but then....!!!
Great tease on those dagger brushes of yours which we can't get lol. Now, do you know approximately when they will become available again in Amazon in USA?
I’m so sorry, they sold out last week :( More sets are coming in a week. The 1/4 inch dagger is sold separately on kristyrice.com
@@KristyRice Cool 😎 beanies. Thanks & keep up encouraging others to find their inner child through watercoloring. You're the best!
I have to say ultimately it's still personal preference and ability of the user to manage the brush. I love the dagger and the rounds. I use both. Each tool has its best of design to make specific marks. Each one is fun. Learning these machines of creation that are filled with colors to create artwork is an end that is wondrous. I am only painting since October so still new in this painting thing but I have bought this brush that brush. Costly and cheap. They all can be used . Why even a pointy stick is a good paintbrush for the right reason. I want to buy other brushes by different makers but I have enough brushes. Do I have the right brush I don't know yet. I am getting some favorite ones I like.
Trial and more trial! You’re doing it right!!
I have one I will try this. Thank you.
Yay!!
Don't have a dagger at all in my small collection. Must have. Must have. Must have. Looking forward to it. Great video as always. Thanks
I would agree, lol! And thank you for watching!!
Dagger looks great!
Sorry love them both ha ha😍😍🖌🖌cant wait to order a set of yr brushes ! Love from Melbourne, Australia 💜💖😏
Sorry, naaa the more the merrier!!
Ok....i have been binging on your videos and practicing with the A.Owin watercolor set and royal and langnickel watercolor brushes....love them....my issue is with the half inch ZEN dagger brush...i don't know if i have a faulty brush or what but its like it seems there aren't enough bristles on it or its waaay too springy(bristles seem too thin) but still working at because i decided to invest in watercolor paper and loving the results of painting with watercolor now.
I’m really impressed with your dagger brush techniques and would love to get your brushes. Will Amazon have them again?
Thank you❤️ oh yes, more here in about a week!
let the competition begin..
😂😂😂
I like these exercises. As a beginner i clearly need practice with the brushes. I inherited a boat load of brusher so it is ice to learn how and why. So far i like synthetic dagger.
Keep practicing!
Just purchased your dagger brush! I have a 1/4 “ Kingart Gold series brush that I have been practicing with but get frustrated b/c I can’t consistently make the same type of shapes. One half of a leaf or pedal looks awesome while the other half looks meh….. lol Looking forward to trying your brush!
My dagger is shorter and has a great bounce back so will give you more control! Can't wait to hear what you think!
Your brushes finally arrived, now to choose my colour palette!! Im curious to see what the dagger brush can do!!
Hope you like it!
@@KristyRice I will let you know!
From the daggers I have collected, i have enjoyed my Escoda Perla the best. I would love to hear your recommendations and which brands.
I like the dagger brush
❤️❤️❤️
I have used only the dagger from your line, I like it but I definitely need more practice :) I have used many round brushes, princeton velvetouch, snap and the craftamo and Callia
All great brushes! Thanks for watching!
Hello Kristy! Notifications are always on.. amy of Manila Philippines is looking forward to your wonderful tips and videos!!! M still rewatching ur videos one by one!!!😍❤️😍❤️
Awww thank you!!
Hey Kristy! The shipping to australia currently costs more than the price of your 1/4 in dagger haha! So I'll wait till your whole set becomes available on amazon coz i think the shippings a bit more reasonable! Cant wait. From just using the floppy dagger that I already have, its a game changer for leaves I swear.
Yeahhhh sorry :( More of the set in stock realllly soon!
I don't have a lot of experience with the dagger brush. The ones I own have the long bristles. I don't use them often. I really want to try the short bristles. I think I will like them better. I tried to order your set last week, but it was sold out. As far as rounds go, I like Escoda, Silver Black Velvet, Princeton, and Rosemary and Co. I use quills and Japanese brushes too. I really don't have a favorite, per se. I paint a lot of landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes. Occasionally I paint florals, but need more practice with them.
Yes the long bristle daggers are lovely once you get a handle on the short daggers! Brushes out of stock now but more coming soon
I got a Princeton Neptune dagger and...don't like it at all. After watching this, it's because the bristles are too long making it very hard to control. I just purchased one of yours so will see how that works for me. I've also been experimenting with filbert brushes some and having lots of fun with those!
Yes the longer and softer bristles can feel very wild in hand!
Round is my favorite......BUT....I am planning on purchasing a dagger. I am excited to try something new!
You’ll have a blast!!!
Love this video! So fun and chatty 😉. I purchased a few dagger brushes (unfortunately not yours because I'm from the Netherlands and import costs are so high) and I kind of like them but I need way more practice. You make it look so easy but I'm struggling a bit but I won't give up.
Don’t give up!! Watch this one, it might help :)
czcams.com/video/8uyfgbCREFw/video.html
@@KristyRice I've watched it and I'm practising right now. Filling a page with drag and lift 😀. Your video's are so informative. Love them!
I would like to have seen a side-by-side of the two floral compositions.
What brand of round brush did you use? I love the point on it!
I think the dagger brush is harder to use (I bought your set of brushes)-probably because it is more sensitive to pressure. I’m glad you said something about the really pointy dagger brushes being harder to use. I had wondered about that.
As far as which brush I think is better, I think it depends on what look you are going for and your skill level. I think your dagger brush is perfect for your style. I really want to try that pointy round brush because I have had a really hard time getting a fine point with my Princeton round brushes. Oh, also, what size is that round brush? I have had some pretty good results with the dagger brush, but I am still so lacking in skills that I think both brushes are hard to use.
What brand of sketchbook do you use? I have tried a few, and I get frustrated with the quality of paper. And I LOVE your “face-off” 😢
I bought your brushes a couple of weeks ago and absolutely love them as a newbie in watercolor. Keep up the good work. From rural Maine.
Oh I’m soooo glad!!!
Just purchased your brushes. Do you have videos explaining how to use each brush in the set?
Yesss :) Scan the QR code on the back of each brush card. You will be taken to exclusive how-to videos!
I love love love the black velvet silver line of brushes but in Australia there almost impossible to get and when you can the price starts at $100 per brush. I’m unable to understand the dagger brush numbering system . I’ve only been able to find 1/8 or 3/8 what is you dagger brush equivalent to on the market?
I don’t know what I’m doing wrong to get your brushes, I have gone to the Amazon link several times and I see brushes but not yours in the 6 pages I looked at. It is operator error I’m sure but I have even looked without going through your link and I’m not seeing your set. Im so excited to get them.🥰 I just found you and am loving binge watching, thank you!
I’m so sorry! When an item is out of stock Amazon search gets super weird. More brushes are coming soon!
Oh thank you so much, I guess that means that they’re really wonderful that you are out of stock! I’ll keep looking thank you!
Checking Amazon daily to see if the brushes are back. I was waiting for you to show the florals at the end side by side. Did I miss that? I am intrigued by the dagger brush. Even the name is mysterious. All cloak and ...
I’m so sorry, they sold out last week :( More sets are coming in a week. The 1/4 inch dagger is sold separately on kristyrice.com
I have the black velvet dagger and it's not like that lol I do use it but not as much as my round. But I like the shape of that one
The black velvet is quite a bit softer so feels more out of control but is a lovely brush once you get the hang of using a dagger in general :)
I do not have a curved dagger. Mines more a straight one. The round one works nice I see. Thank you
Straight is fun too!!
ARRRGGGH! I'm having a major meltdown over the dagger! I want to love it, but think I just got a dud. I wasn't able to get your brush, so I found one I thought might be okay a Princeton Neptune 3/8" dagger. It's horrible. Or perhaps I'm just too used to my round. I want to branch and be brave, but this baby has none of the snap and I have none of the control as I do with my rounds. Or even my filberts!. I will watch and follow your dagger tutorial and see how I do after that. I am also going to buy a couple more daggers of different brands/sizes. I am a bold beginning expert (as my sweetheart loves to call me), so I won't let any tool beat me. I just need to find the right one for me.
For most of my work I use round brushes in 6 or 8. Occasionally, I will use a 10 and I use 2 for detail work. Anyone recommend a good size of dagger that won't be so floppy like the one I got from Princeton?
The Neptune dagger doesn’t have the snap my brushes do… it will definitely feel more out of control. Also my dagger is a short bristle dagger which give even more control :)
@@KristyRice I have ordered yours and CANNOT WAIT! I definitely appreciate snappier brushes. I am hoping your whole set is back in stock soon, but I understand the world we're in right now! I'm just grateful to add joy in my life and the lives around me with the beauty I create!! ❤️
Hi Kristy. I really enjoyed this video! I want to try your brush set but I was also wondering about the round brush you were using. Is it from your set? If not, what brush is it?
Welllll that brush is a little something I’m working on :) More details soon :)
I have not used a dagger brush at all. As for my round brushes I have a Dynamic Distraction set of brushes that are my general brushes. I also have a set of water brushes that are both round & flat, and I have a cat tongue brush.
All awesome tools!
New to the Chanel was wondering when the brush set will be available on Amazon would love to buy it thanks
Yes very soon! We’re just waiting for a new shipment to arrive any day!
I like these
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Can’t help feeling that talent wins! Maybe a different brush will improve your technique but tools are no replacement for innate ability.
Can't say I disagree but a dagger definitely makes some strokes easier :)
I’m new to watercolor and only have the round. I have an angular shader brush - what is the difference between that and the dagger? Love all of your videos! Filled with so much information and inspiration!
Usually a true dagger will have more of a curve on the bristles, not a sharper angle :)
Thank you Kristy!
I will say I have a couple Princeton daggers and cats tongue and I like yours way better 🥰
Oh my gosh thank you!!
G'day Kristy, I am a new subbie and I love! love! love! your videos, you make everything just click and make sense! and oh so much fun. My daughter is the artist in our family, but I do love to try! I am in Australia and I cannot find anywhere to purchase your gorgeous looking brush set? any ideas? Cheers Wendy xx
Welcome Wendy!!! So glad you’re here! Right now my brushes are only available on a Amazon but we’re sold out there! More coming soon!
@@KristyRice Thank you so much for replying :) I will keep an eye out xxx
I'm still struggling with the dagger brush, still figuring it out. I'm not a huge fan of the round. I tend to use the cat tongue the most.
The cat’s tongue is tooo fun!
How long do watercolors last? I have super old art supplies from when I was in high school/college! I’ve always kept my supplies inside because I’ve used them here and there throughout the years.
I mean, I purchased a 70 year old set and used it a few months back and it was perfection! So as long as the palette hadn’t been contaminated with anything else I’d say it would likely outlive us!! Here is a vid about my old paint discovery!
czcams.com/video/eeLC1HNlTfk/video.html
Wow, that is incredible, thank you!
Hi Kristy, I love your videos!! I have tried to buy your brush collection on Amazon and can't seem to find it? Any suggestions? Thank you!
They are currently sold out but more are on their way!
Dagger 🏆 but I do love a good pointed round ♡
Me too!!
Hey Kristi if you could only have two brushes to begin which two and what sizes?
1/4 inch dagger and a liner, synthetic bristles :)
I would like to give your paint brushes a try! Do you know when they will be back in stock?
About a week!
I have a dagger and quite a few round brushes and I like both for different reasons. My favour round brushes are Cotman and Daler-Rowney. I have a Princeton synthetic round on my wish list. 😊
When I got my dagger brush (Pro Arte) I just played with it in my sketch book, making notes about the direction and angle of a shape I liked.
Where I find a dagger brush really comes into its own is when you load it with two colours. THEN the magic happens. 😊
Yessss!!!
What round brush are you using? It really does have a really nice fine point on it!
Welllll it’s kind of a secret… it doesn’t exist yet… for sale at least
@@KristyRice haha, ok, I'll be patient 😉😂
@@KristyRice oh, tease, tease! I noticed the lovely point on it! I have a need for a round with a nice point!
Isn't that rather like asking, "Which is better, a hammer or an open-end adjustable?"
Obviously, the answer is a resounding, "Yes!"
Ahem. Also:
"It depends on the job I'm doing - ie wrench for plumbing, hammer for telemarketers..."
OK, now I'll go watch the video.
Creative click bait 😝😝😝
@@KristyRice And bloody brilliant marketing!
Well done!
👏👏👏
I love your brush set and really use the daggers and liner mostly. I would like to see additional sizes to add. I'm very pleased with the brushes and your educational videos.
Thank you!!! I’m working on an epic round brush! Super excited!!
@@KristyRice ME TOO!!!
Good evening when will you be stocking up your beautiful brush set on Amazon ? Does it take a few weeks? That’s okay just kinda went cray on other brushes ……..
We’ll have a small amount in stock in about 1.5 weeks then a larger restock about 3 weeks following that :) So more are indeed coming!!
@@KristyRice 😍
What Round Brush did you use ??Thank U
It’s my own round brush in development :)
Is this the Paintcrush travel brush set on Amazon or is there another set?
There are two now plus a single travel brush :)
If I could individually purchase a larger dagger from you I would order it immediately. It looks so fun! I like these comparisons.
Thank you!!
I love the round brush far more than the dagger brush.
It’s good to know what you love!
What do you do when your paint breaks to little peaces
If they are not already in a half pan, put them in a half pan, add water and mix them all back together. :)
Is the Amazon link to your brushes correct? When I click it I'm not seeing what's pictured on your site. Can you offer any assistance? Thanks!
There is a big batch arriving on Tuesday. We check each for quality and then send off to Amazon. We're hoping to be in stock again late next week! XO
How can I purchase your brush set? I’m not able to on Amazon or your site. Thank you
They are sold out now but coming back in stock soon!
I want to buy the brush set of yours but could not find it on Amazon .
It sold out last week but more are almost here!!
Round
👍🏻
Please let me know your preferred dagger brush brand and sizes.
I’m biased but my own daggers are my favorite. Link in brushes section here
