Innovative methods to explore and forecast the deterioration of cultural heritage

Stone deterioration is an important issue, especially if we consider the traditional stones that have been used as building material in the cultural heritage. There are many processes that take place on the surface of these materials and the majority of the effects lead to the net loss of surface material. The goal of the ERODEM "Exploring Carbonate Rock Recession through Data Fusion of Extensive Experimental Data via Machine Learning" project, led by Prof. Claudio Mazzoli, is to improve the knowledge of all the factors (also related to microclimate) that play a crucial role on the materials conservation and to model the dissolution rate under specific conditions. ERODEM project was funded in the framework of the main theme "Geosciences for Sustainable Development" which allowed the Department of Geosciences of the University of Padua to be selected by the MUR as Department of Excellence (2023-2027).
