The SAD & SLOW DEATH of CLEMSON Football (What Has Gone Wrong?)

  • Just a few years ago, Clemson looked like the next dynasty in college football and Dabo Swinney was close to being the best coach in college football. Couple that with a great culture and you had a recipe for Clemson to be the #1 program in the country. Except, the Tigers have instead suffered a long slow death and now are being left in the dust. Today, I want to discuss how Dabo Swinney built Clemson to begin with, the slow downfall itself and why this has all happened, enjoy!

      I think it would be neat to do rise of any the "Basketball" schools, so you could do up Duke, N Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky, all teams doing pretty good recently considering the football teams usually in the past arent as good as their B Ball teams haha.
      Or like "surprising" teams that are playing really good but you don't usually hear about them, so like teams like Maryland, Oregon State, Tulane is still playing really well, another team having a crazy good season is Air Force, James Madison lol.

    A big factor in Clemson's decline is the resurgence of surrounding schools. Clemson was loading up on Georgia talent, including two generational qb's. Those recruits are staying home now. Miami and Florida state are also scooping much of the florida pipeline clemson utilized as well as providing opposition in conference. Not only that, Beamer has won a few in state recruits for South Carolina and Mack Brown has kept guys home in NC. The result is much more competitive balance.

      Recruiting is fine....coaching is the problem. Dabo hires friends and former players with no coaching experience as position coaches.....that's the entire issue....There is plenty of enough elite talent on that team.

      Depends how this year finishes out.. they may think they’re at rock bottom now.. but the bottom can ALWAYS fall out and things can ALWAYS get worse. If they were to finish under 500 this year.. then maybe? But even if they win out and go 9-4.. Dabo is still gonna be on the hot seat for next year. Honestly though.. I think the writing is on the wall for Dabo era Clemson football. Having the kind of drama they’ve had for 3+ years now and progressively losing more and more games can really scare the good recruits away.. the best recruits want to win AND get to the NFL and the prospects of Clemson fulfilling that for them is looking less and less likely.

    • @richardway9890

      @darthsilversith667 you're delusional and don't know anything about clemson football. If we go 9-4 this year. It will be one of the best coaching jobs Dabo has ever done. We have missed on 2 five star QBs, And Dabos main problem is wanting to give his guys a chance to coach. I think he hired some of these guys about 10 years too soon. They needed more seasoning in their coaching. Most people forget Billy Napier was Dabos first OC at clemson. He couldn't get it done so he got rid of him. 10+ years later that guy is head coach at Fla. Point being, Dabo us stubborn but will make the tough decisions when he needs to.

    • @richardway9890

      And the transfer portal is overrated. It's mostly for shitty teams that can't recruit out of high school. If you're building your whole team on players that couldn't cut it at their original school. Who wants to transfer and sit on the bench? I'm not saying one or two here or there wouldn't help but I think Dabo knows that too. We recruit good enough to not have to build our team on transfers. The little stunt going on in Colorado is going to be the Prime example of why getting all transfers won't work. Just wait 4 years when Colorado still sucks.

    It's so easy to say Clemson is falling off but in my opinion if we talking football as a die-hard Clemson fan we have to get better on the Offensive Line. That's where we are losing which has affected Cades growth and has led to a lot of failures offensively Clemson defense is ranked 5th in the country and isn't allowing 20 pts average. I feel the offense line coach and Tyler grishim the WRs coach are probably gone after this year. Dabo knows what he is doing. I feel it's not just about the transfer portal that's not the case at clemson its development and coaching in critical situations. But we will see I'm a ticket holder and seen many games even in 2010 when we loss to USF in the mineke bowl. The WR's haven't improved since arriving as freshman with Grisham the coach, unlike when Jeff Scott was there and guys got better each year. The only era that compares to this era of NIL, is when scholarship reductions were put in place. In the 70's, you had a scholarship limit of 105. Teams would stockpile guys; Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Penn St., UW, USC. Then it was reduced to 95, and then 85. Teams could not longer just sit five star guys, and it was equitable. But today, it's the wild west with NIL and an open portal every year. The portal used to be guys who graduated already. Now, you can flip your entire roster in a year. I think he’s been a great coach and recruiter for 1 1/2 years but he’s lost his mojo of what made this program special in the first place. Now you look at the other programs like Georgia and Florida State they’re starting to be a lot more competitive and recruit efficiently with their marketing brand. He may not be a fan of the NIL but I don’t think it’s going away anytime soon in the future and it’s the reason why Clemson’s football program is tanking until Dabo realizes he needs to wake up that change isn’t always easy.

    Few thoughts from someone who has actually followed the team. The problem with 2022 wasn't DJ, it was the fact that aside from the running backs, the offensive talent was very lacking while the system did not maximize that talent in any way. Everyone but OC Brandon Streeter knew DJ didn't fit a spread offense, but they used one anyway while the receiver talent was young or just not being developed.
    This season, it turns out Klubnik isn't the guy anyone thought he was. His decision making is awful and based on how he handles himself in the media, he doesn't seem to understand what he does wrong sometimes. The receivers are still not great and none of them are a true No. 1, but some of the talent is starting to show. The Duke loss was a "bad loss" only if you don't follow the ACC, they're a good program and Elko and Leonard have made them a tough matchup for anyone, but turnovers derailed Clemson in that game, not Duke. It's a similar thing to N.C. State, they always play Clemson tough and when it comes to playing conference games, no team in the country plays up their competition like the Wolfpack, but again, Klubnik wasn't ready for it.
    This "end of the world" reactionary content has been the problem with Clemson fans since I moved down here. It's a bad year that followed two seasons that weren't outright dominant. It happens and it's only a legitimate problem if it continues.

    The coaching isn’t developing the talent. Thats the biggest thing. WRs and O-line especially have not been what they have in the past. Even in the Tahj Boyd - Deshaun Watson years, the o-line was very serviceable and played well together. Clemson is getting out-schemed and dominated on the line on offense more than ever and have no true offensive identity. I think part of it may also be strength and conditioning. These guys are getting pushed around and are just soft. Dabo has hired a lot of unproven coaches at the position coach level, most of which are former players or teammates of Dabo. While I love the idea of bringing former players back home to coach, Dabo has got to let them get more experience before bringing them in. He lets these guys come in and learn and struggle, but Clemson, from a program perception standpoint, should be beyond struggling - even without the portal, their roster is a top 5 most talented one in CFB. There’s no excuse for being a .500 team when your talent far exceeds 80-90% of your competition. There’s not one fix. Wholesale changes must be made. Simultaneously, I believe in Dabo. He built it once and he’s a competitor. He can build it again. We just have to be patient, keep supporting our team, and hope and pray that Graham Neff (Clemson AD) is in Dabo’s ear helping push him in the right direction

Last place in fumbles lost. Rarely give up scores on drives of 50 yards or more but defense always has short field and is actually ranked very high in total defense. Tennessee and Clemson can’t be good at the same time. We recruit basically the exact same pool of HS kids from the same areas
    It all started when Lane Kiffin was hired in 2009, he told Tajh Boyd (who was a Tennessee commit) to look elsewhere and that’s how he ended up at Clemson. Then once Kiffin left Tennessee that’s what started the downward spiral of the program. Trevor Lawrence, Tee Higgins, Amari Rodgers don’t go to Clemson if Tennessee isn’t a disaster in the mid-late 2010s. Tennessee also lost one of the biggest recruiting pipelines to Clemson in the state of NC. We’ve recently gained it back under Heupel and with Dabos refusal to adapt to modern CFB recruiting will be Clemsons downfall. Even if they fire him and get a new coach that does things differently, it’s gonna be hard for that new coach to out-recruit Heupel.

    JUST RELAX!!
    Everyone needs to remember, this still is "Little Ole Clemson". Nobody and I mean NOBODY ever thought they would go on a run of 12 seasons with 10+ wins and 2 titles. A bad year can and will happen to any team not coached by the GOAT Nick Saban. This is a small school in a tiny town in South Carolina that doesn't have multi millionaire boosters like an A&M or a massive alumni like an Ohio State. Things just work different there. Yes, Dabo needs to make some changes on his coaching staff, primarily the o line and WR. Yes, the portal needs to be used. And yes, for 3 years now the offense has been garbage. But that's what happens with a bad o-line. Just ask FSU how bad their teams were because they couldn't block. Clemson won 10/11 games with DJU despite having a terrible o line. This year not only has it become even worse, but the team also has suffered from horrible luck. All of the goal line fumbles. All of the missed FGs. The scoop n score against the Noles right when Clemson was about to go up by two scores with all the momentum and STILL had a chance to win on a 30 yard kick but missed. Tiger fans, I know you're upset. Believe me, I'm upset too. But have faith that Dabo will get the right coaches this off-season. We are still recruiting at a high level. There is lots of young talent on the team. We've just had a rough season with every break going against us. It happens like that sometimes. Block out the hate coming from Gamecock, Buckeye, and Seminole fans on the internet because all they can do is talk while deep down they can only wish they've had a decade as good as the one Clemson just had. Don't give up on the Tigers. Things have NEVER been this good for the program and it would be a real shame if we let it go by living in negativity rather than enjoying the ride. Dabo took the team to heights not even Frank Howard or Danny Ford could. Let's trust that he can bring us back there!

    I still want to know how clemsons defense in 15 managed to hold OU to 17 points but let Alabama score 45??? At the time Bama was a run team who was sometimes capable of making a few throws. The blueprint to shut that type of team down is easy. Stack the box and play man coverage with safety help. Yeah if a RB breaks out he's taking it to the house. But thats extremely hard to do when the RB has to get through the D line and LBs. But then again BV was the DC then and he just showed the world that he would rather give up long sustained drives 4-8 yards at a time than committing to stopping the run with OU losing to KU and OSU.

  • @nickvoelker7180
    @nickvoelker7180 Před 8 měsíci

    In the end Dabo may turn out to be right with his stance on transfers and NIL. What I already see happening is less development of players occurring with the trend of hiring "young and brilliant" coaches who place day one talent and scheme far ahead maximizing an athlete's potential. That works great for the 50-75 guys in cfb who were born with NFL talent and attributes, but everyone else will see their ceilings come crashing down and their NFL dreams evaporate. While this is happening, the programs that still coach players, will become the feeders to the NFL. Then, it takes more than wearing the same jersey to be a team, and a nonstop convection of players entering and leaving programs will perpetually leave them in storming and norming phases where they never actually gel as a team. Compare TAMU and Miami to mid PAC12 teams. Those PAC teams far out perform TAMU and Miami despite their lack of talent, transfers, and war chest of NIL money. Good coaching is why.

  • @bobstoops5028
    @bobstoops5028 Před 8 měsíci

    Good video but there’s more nuance. First Clemson has an NIL program (example being dj’s Dr Pepper deal). Second the number 1 issue is player development and inexperienced/bad coaching specifically on offense and special teams. O Line is full of 4 and 5 star guys who just don’t pan out. Receivers don’t get separation and Cade suffers from those groups not meeting expectations and also having growing pains we didn’t see from Trevor (not ready to write him off just yet). This could be fixed with portal guys who are already finished products but idk if that’s realistic. I don’t like dabo being against the transfer portal and I’m hoping he changes his mind but not adapting to NIL and transfer is not why they’re bad. There’s rot in the program that even if dabo makes the exact right moves in the off-season probably won’t be fixed until 2025
