    I recently took a hard crash on Snow Summit's new trail, 10-ply. Today we get a good look at the crash, what happened, and how I could have avoided it.
    In the end, I'm grateful that the injury wasn't any worse, that I had good people with me, and good trail staff to get me down the mountain.
    I hope my mountain biking philosophy helps you or at least its cheesiness is entertaining. I use this approach to generally avoid big crashes, and we see in this episode how breaking the rules breaks bones.
    Hope you dig it.
    HUGE THANKS to Katy for taking care of me after getting down the hill and for driving me to get fast food and for driving us all the way down the mountain.

    Such a great video. I appreciate your honesty and I know that most of my wipeouts have been because of the autopilot/bad habits on sketchy sections. So much of mountain biking is the mental game. I have a great interest in your story since I’m in the early stages of ankle fracture/surgery recovery from my crash and I am enjoying seeing you get back into your groove. Wow, just watched this Alan and it was really painful to see you crash. I had a bad OTB like that early this year, brings back memories. Blew out my shoulder now I finally had surgery to repair. I'm off my Trek 'till early next year, Doc says could be 4 months. it's killing me I wanna ride so bad. BOSS, dang that makes so much sense, 100%. It's so easy to auto pilot on trails known. Thanks so much for the share, I'm on learning overload. Happy you've recovered and better than ever.

      Man...sorry to hear about your injury. I feel you. It was months for me before I was even able to roll around a parking lot on a bike.
      I hope you heal well.
      Something I said in a vlog...and maybe I should do a full vid on this is instead of waiting to ride again, prepare to ride again.
      Of course listening to your doctor and PT, you can still do work to stay fit. When I separated my AC joint years ago, I actually totally changed my diet, and it wasn't long after coming back from that that I was fitter than I was pre-injury.
      The wrist injury has been a bit different...quite a bit harder to come back from, but same thing, I did a ton of leg and core work while I was unable to use my hand/wrist.
      But yeah man...it's good to watch vids, read, etc. But keeping moving (safely and according to doc's orders) will be huge for your fitness and mental health...especially if you can get out into the woods.

    I watch allot of crashes but your OTB is one of the few to break it down and I appreciate that . For my crashes I have no video to really get a true perspective as you got with this episode . Hard to relive but breaking it down may help to avoid a crash in the future but we are human and bad habits are going to pop up and why baseball players go into slumps while batting . They know the correct way to bat but return to what is familiar when they fist began the sport . Event though its not right . Definitely a flaw in the human mind and we have allot of them . There are some out there that really never crash or very rarely and probably were trained correctly at an early age or just have a six sense about things and pay attention to it .

    Great breakdown! I did something similar about 20 years ago riding something not nearly as cool, and without the modern technology we have to analyze it. I had external pins sticking out as well, and one inside, so I guess it could have been worse! In fact, I also broke a similar sit bone that JKW recently broke, so you can say it could be a lot worse! I was back on the bike in 8 weeks. My wrist was super weak but strengthened up fast. Hang in there!

    Thx for sharing. My biggest fear. I wonder if Li like Bikes technique of the hip hinge would have prevented this?

    • @mtb_alan
      @mtb_alan  Před 3 lety +1

      My pleasure. True, the hip hinge is one foundational part of any athletic movement. It's the most basic thing any movement coach learns about. But it's one part of athletic movement and when over-used or used at the wrong time can cause problems. In this case, it was my hinging that caused the crash. I hinged too much and too early.
      What's important to remember about the hip hinge, is that it's not a static solution but rather a dynamic preparation. This means it works best as part of a MOVEMENT not as a position.
      True, it loads your posterior chain more, so it takes stress off your quads and better allows your legs to act as suspension. But more importantly, hinging at the hip loads your posterior chain, i.e. your biggest muscles, i.e. your butt and hamstrings. And we LOAD a thing in order to FIRE that thing. So loading the posterior change, works best when you're getting ready to OPEN that hinge to generate power, i.e. open your hips for something like a pump or a jump.
      Hope that helps!

    I am interested in the injury, the sugery, and the followup. Broken thumb and wrist are the most common. Dr. Daniel Wongwarwat out of Loma Linda is definitly the go to surgeon in the area. Did my thumb, and had to cut it in half and spin it back into the right position after another orthepedic screwed it up. Good luck!

    • @mtb_alan
      @mtb_alan  Před 4 lety

      Dang...that sounds gnarly.
      Ha...yeah Wongwarwat was great with me.
      I fractured my ulna and dislocated my lunate. According to Dr. Wongwarwat, this is the worst kind of wrist injury. The surgery involved re-attaching the ligaments and tendons and putting in four pins to keep the wrist immobilized and the lunate in place.
      The follow-up is ongoing. I broke my wrist in August, had the pins in for 7 weeks and started therapy in November. I still only have limited mobility and strength. The recovery continues.
