    I also like LMNT as I lose a lot of salt in FL as well. Handheld is a necessity for any run in heat over 30 minutes. Hydration vest for anything over 1 hour in the summer if I don't have access to water on the route.

      Without access to water on the route, you're good to wear a vest for those longer runs!
      Do you find you drink more when you're using LMNT? I just suck that stuff down and it makes me more thirsty!

    I agree, humidity is worse than temperature. I will try to get most of the run done in the dark early in the morning and wear a hydration vest. I’ll also run slower and take short breaks/walks if I need them. I’m not a good hot weather runner. Favorite drink is Nuun.

    Great insights, Matt, and you should know if anyone does. I'd rather get summer running tips from a runner who isn't in Colorado, the California mountains, New England, Seattle, or Canada, no offense to the fine folks from those lovely places but that's where a lot of running writers seem to be based. I've been doing this for a long time and I still don't have it figured out. It's funny that a few weeks ago you asked if it was hot where I am and I replied that it wasn't all that bad, and then it got really bad, dew points well into the 70s all the time. I caught a little break this morning because it stayed so warm overnight that dew never settled on the lawns. I really felt the difference not being inside that layer of moisture during my run. One thing that I think I did better last year was to come into the summer with more speed in my legs--less that I focused on it during the spring, more that I went for higher mileage this spring, even though I was also intending to keep up my speed, and got slower from a lot of slogging. Air movement is a big part for cooling, literally being able to get out of the warm misty cloud of our own sweat vapor, and especially for slower folks like me it can get to where no amount of slowing down is enough because I lose cooling by as much as I'm reducing my effort. Last week was a stinker, being affected by it enough that it messed up my sleep, which didn't help the running one bit. I'm keeping my expectations low this week, just trying to do a little bit better.🍼

    • @its_Matt_B_
      @its_Matt_B_  Před měsícem +1

      Just like in the winter when temps get way too cold to run outside, the same goes with summer runs. Don't sweat (😅) the stinker of a week; we all have them. At the time of this comment there are only 68 days of summer left, so....take that for what's it's worth. 🙄
      Seriously though, keep doing what you do; you're putting in the work and that's more than can be said for most people!
      Sorry to hear about your sleep being affected! That actually sounds like the worst part! Are you sleeping better this week?

    • @largeeddie
      @largeeddie Před měsícem +1

      @@its_Matt_B_ Thanks for the words of encouragement, Matt. Yes, sleeping is less chaotic this week and that really helps. In a way it might be good that the summer heat came in so early. In past years I've hit the wall in late August or early September and then just waited it out until the fall weather arrived. The time there's more reason for me to try to figure out what's sustainable, with two solid months of this still in store. I hope it goes well for you too.

    Put a water bottle in the freezer so it melts as you drink..use compression shirts and shorts or you end up running in the adult version of a baby's wet diaper that's about to fall off...running shorts don't work in heat..for me an absolute must have is steigen socks..they are very thin and they're hydroponic and will wick sweat away from your feet..wet feet and blisters seem to attract each other..😢

    🍼 I'm at Snowbird acclimating for the 28k on Friday and the 50k on Saturday. These will both be many hours so I have to rely on race hydration, which is (probably) diluted Naak. I've been training with that for months even though my preference is for Skratch or Tailwind. Normally I'd do one flask with mix and another with just water, but because of the dilution, I'll use mix in all my bottles. The other issue is that some of the aid stations are quite far apart, so you have to carry a lot of fluid, especially given the sun exposure. The surrounding area is going to have 100F temps but up in the mountains it will be a bit cooler. . I'm using a 1.5L bladder, two 500mL flasks in the vest, and I have an UD Ultra Belt with two more 500mL flasks. I only have to fill all of those on the first descent from Hidden Peak into the much hotter low point of the race. I also have a Ciele bucket hat that works well and arm sleeves that I may fill with ice. I recently learned a trick from Simon Gerard of folding ice into a buff around the neck and I may try that.

    • @its_Matt_B_

      @@its_Matt_B_ I wasn't going to but the other day they bumped up the 28k to two stones (same as 50k) and it only has one cut-off. So I thought I'd (try to) beat that cut-off, then go easy for the rest of the 28k so I won't be beat up for the next day. And if I can finish both races, I'll get four stones, which is the same as a 100-mile UTMB race, which is not bad for 78k split over two days. Plus I have all week to hike (slowly) up the trails so I'll have some idea what I'm in for. Some of the race trails are closed for construction, which is a bummer but the ones that are open are mostly similar. Thanks for the vibes. I'll be sure and report back how it went. Even though I'm running Kodiak 100k in October, Speedgoat is really my A race for the season.
