This is the finale of a week-long series of videos celebrating Stephen Sondheim’s 90th birthday. Each day I posted a Starkid dreamcast of a different Sondheim show. #SilvanaSondheimWeek Today’s pick is Into the Woods (the first Sondheim show I ever saw). Thanks for watching this series! Stick around till the end for a special message.
How I chose the cast: For this video and the rest of the series I chose the cast based on who I generally think would be best for each role. I didn't stick strictly to the vocal range of the characters because that would seriously limit the options, especially with some of Sondheim's characters. While I did try to pick people with a similar voice part of each character, the more important factor was if I thought they could portray the character well through acting and if they fit the type for each character physically and vocally.
Also why I chose these specific shows and left others out: I couldn't do Pacific Overtures for obvious reasons lol. For both A Little Night Music and Follies I felt that it would be too difficult to try and cast actors who are all around 30 in roles meant for drastically older and younger actors. I thought about doing Passion but I honestly couldn't decide on a Fosca (leave your suggestions in the comments). If I did though, I think Curt and Kim could be Giorgio and Clara and I could also see Nick Gage as Doctor Tamborri. I'm not as familiar with Road Show/Bounce, although from what I know about the show I could see Brian Rosenthal as Hollis (I think he's just my go to romantic lead lol.) I'm sure if I gave it some time I could cast the rest of the characters. As for Anyone Can Whistle, I really don't know it outside of a few songs.
Some of the clips featured in this video:
All of the Into the Woods clips are from the original cast proshot filmed for PBS.
Shitty Broadway Agony: • Agony - Into the Woods...
Britney Coleman singing "No One Is Alone": • Remarks: Britney Coleman - Zábava
Thanks everyone for watching this series! Are there other Sondheim roles you could see Starkids playing? Who would be Desiree? Who would be Buddy? WHO WOULD BE FOSCA??
Can you please do this with more composers?! This is so fun!
@@emmaoneill3154 I definitely want to in the future. If you have any suggestions lmk.
@@SilvanaLTD rodgers and hammerstein?
My first thought was Jamie Lynn as Fosca
I feel like Joey could be Buddy but also I'm not as familiar with Follies as I should be
Curt as Rapunzel's Prince is very good, but I can't stop thinking about Jeff in that role just to see him do Agony and the Agony Reprise opposite Robert. The level of drama would be unbelievable
Darcy DeAngelis as a former Rapunzels prince I’m proud
I would gladly give my firstborn to see Robert and Curt do Agony. INSPIRED
If the witch aint Joe Walker, I don't want it
I'll take Britney Coleman
Lmao sorry to dissapoint
@@Sam-tk6dq Good, good.
I actually got to see Britney Coleman as Cinderella in this show and she KILLED it! She would make a fantastic witch as well!
That's awesome! I think she played rapunzel at some point too.
Brant Cox as Jack is inspired also I would give my kneecaps to see Robert and Curt sing agony
LAUREN AS CINDERELLA
I think Jon Matteson would be a good narrator too
I was pleasantly surprised seeing Brosenthal as The Baker. Great casting!
Thanks!
I would have cast him as Rapunzel's Prince
I love that you choose so many actors who've been in less Starkid shows that really fit the roles instead of just picking more popular Starkid actors
I tried to share the love. Although there are still 16 actors that I didn't get to include in anything. It's harder for some of the people who were only in the potter shows or MAMD because a lot of them didn't even sing so I don't have as good of a sense of them as performers.
There are so many great roles for women in this show
As a former Cinderella’s Father, I’ve never been so offended, attacked, and hurt. I get it tho
Haha sorry. Apologies also to the Steward and Grandmother/cinderella's mother
As a former Snow White, I feel your pain. Who will yawn? Who will say "excuse me" in a high pitched voice? Personally, I'm not sure any of them have the talent, which was most likely why Snow White wasn't included.
@@SilvanaLTD This is probably way too late, but I would personally see Joe Moses as Cinderella's Father, Joey Richter as the Steward and Lily Marks as Granny/Cinderella's Mother
@@novelsolvings8024 never to late to talk about sondheim! Lily marks I'd a great one I didn't consider that.
I can already hear Joe Moses' "I ALWAYS WANTED A SON" @@novelsolvings8024
I would've thought Lord Jeff Blim would be The Wolf.
I did consider him.
As soon as I heard the way the original Wolf/Cinderella’s Prince sings “Hello Little Girl” I was like “oh that’s Rob”
Me: please dont cast Dylan as the Baker. Please don't do it.
*Sees this video*: whew.
I love Dylan but that's not his role.
Love all the Britney Coleman representation throughout this series!
that cast for jack was SO spot on you’ve really got a knack for this!
Thanks! I've listened to Beauty like 8,000 times so it stuck out in my head. I was like "hey that's kind of like a Jack song"
i don't know what's wrong with me, but personally i cannot see lauren lopez as cinderella. she lacks that warmness in her voice & acting. i think i would have switched lauren and britney. i would KILL to see lauren playing the wich. still the best cast of starkids i've seen.
Thanks for watching!
I love Brant Cox so much
He has a great voice!
You know what my heart wasn't ready for? Curt Mega singing Agony
I watched every Starkid/Sondheim video you uploaded and loved every bit of them! Your dreamcast vid for Company actually pushed me to watch the dang thing just today. I love how Sondheim lit the flame to deep dive into musical analysis and even inspire your CZcams channel
Thanks! I'm so glad you watched company too it's one of my favs. I think Tiffany had that really kind of bubbly energy for Red. I think people don't always remember her since she was only in Firebringer.
I've been in love with Into The Woods since I was a little kid wearing out the vhs tape, and this is perfect.
How did I never realize the narrator and the mysterious man were the same actor? Great casting, by the way. Though our choices differ in some ways and we are therefore sworn enemies, Brian Rosenthal will always be a constant between us.
just watched your video and lold at Chris Allen as the evil stepsister. Even though we disagree, thanks for watching anyway. :)
And sometimes school or community theaters will split up the narrator and mysterious man roles to make more parts, but the original broadway version and most professional productions will double cast those roles.
I don't know how to explain it, every time I think about Stephen Sondheim and how amazing he is, I get this strong voice in my head telling me I'll never get to meet him. It fills me with such a deep sadness. I think it came from two things, hearing about his personal connection with Rodgers and Hammerstien, and the first time I saw that video of him teaching the song Not Getting Married and I thought about the level of luck and talent it would take to be in those actors' shoes. Every time you posted this series Ive been remembering this feeling : I'll never get to meet Stephen Sondheim, I -along with others- idolize him like a long dead great artist but hes still around basking in the glow of his legacy telling people how to respect his work in their adaptations, but that doesn't change the fact that I won't get to meet him before he's gone. I don't know why it makes me so sad.
I actually get what you mean. I got to see him speak a few years ago and it was like the greatest moment ever, but when I left I was like "wow, that's it. I'll never even see him again." He really is a living legend and to be alive at the same time as him is wild. but I also know that that's not gonna be true forever. I also get that feeling when I think about artists today interacting with fans and seeing the impact of their work it always makes me sad about the artists who died before they got that chance. Like one time I literally starting crying talking about Lin Manuel Miranda and how successful Hamilton was getting because my brain just went "wow Jonathan Larson never got that" and i don't know it's just sad. But i'm also glad that Sondheim and anyone else has gotten to see their work impact people like us.
Not to brag, but I had a dream once where he sat next to me on an airplane. I asked him to sign my napkin, and he said no. (His reasoning was that he only writes his name when he can write the day's date, and that particular moment existed outside of time so there was no date. It made sense at the time). I woke up sad when I realized I hadn't actually met him. His musicals mean so much to me, so I really relate to what you're saying. Especially, since I'm actually in the process of writing my own musical. It makes me sad knowing that even if I finish it and get it performed (which is a big if) he'll most likely be dead by then, or even if he isn't it will be too small for him to see it. Although if he did buy a ticket that would probably be stressful too, honestly.
I just realized my comment really relates to your username.
Lauren would be a perfect Cinderella! I love this series that you are doing btw good job!
Thanks for watching!
Britney Coleman is a treasure! But so are you, taking you for making these videos and long live Sondheim.
Love for Britney! And thanks!
I love how this video acknowledges lesser known starkids!!!
Brian Rosenthal as the Baker is such rights. These videos are so awesome, would love to see you do another series like this sometime!
Thanks! I want to do more in the future.
You should do this for non-Sondheim shows. It's fun to see what possibilities there are. I personally think it would be cool to see one for Little Shop, Be More Chill, or Spamalot.
I definitely will in the future! Thanks for the suggestions :)
for nearly every single one of these I found myself going “oh hell yeah”
One more for the books, eskgeddit
Robert as Wolf/Cinderella's Prince is truly something that thinking about gave me chills.
Curt Mega is absolutely just our version of Flynn Rider convince me otherwise
I love Tiffany sm she radiates sunshine
I for one am prepared for a Brant Cox renaissance!!!
SASSY SOPRANO QUEEN LAUREN LOPEZ YUH. Also i notice I cast her in a lot of roles that Anna Kendrick has played...hmmmmm
Tbh I wasnt sure who you were going to cast as Baker's Wife and yknow what I get it
Okay but was there actually anyone else but Brian Rosenthal? Was there ever really any other option because it fits so Good
I think BHold fits the Narrator more so than the Mysterious Man but I believe he'd be able to pull it off well enough
(Queen B P is back my heart soars) AND B COLEMAN COMES BACK IN CLUTCH AGAIN. Like come on y'all hear her...she can do it. Please let her do it.
Silv this series was so fun so watch. My first brush with Sondheim was hearing Ladies Who Lunch but just the instrumental for an ENITRELY different fandom. I searched it out and watched the 2011 vers with Patti Lupone and NPH, and that led me to watching the 200(?) vers with Raul Esperza and hearing Being Alive really connected with something in me. I'm not as intense with my love for theatre as I was, but this brought back a joy to combine two different globes of the same art and like discuss and just have fun. Brava! Now if you'll need me, I'll be casting SK in Golden Age Shows (wink wink 😉)
Thanks so much for watching! I'm so glad you enjoyed it so much! I always love reading your comments especially these liveblogs lol. Ladies Who Lunch is a great introduction to Sondheim! Golden age shows you say? Sounds interesting :)
Lauren Lopez as Jack
lol I like it.
It even feels like James Lapine's work left its mark on Starkid in terms of influences. The humour in Starkid's shows is so reminiscent of his musical books (one of which was ITW)
hmm i would have cast rachael as little red riding hood, but otherwise amazing as usual
I did consider her too.
3:09 aged like the finest vine on so many levels
But yeah - voice is fitting
Stepmother: Jaime Lyn Beatty
Florinda and Lucinda: Mariah Rose Faith and Rachael Soglin
Rapunzel: Alex Paul OR Kim Whalen
Jack's mom: Jamie Burns
Wolf/Charming: Rob freaking Manion
Rapunzel's prince: Joey Richter OR Curt Mega
Little Red: Kendall Nicole Yakshe
Jack: Brant Cox
Cinderella: Lauren freaking Lopez
Baker's wife: Meredith Stepien
Baker: Brian Rosenthal OR Dylan Saunders
Narrator: Brian Holden OR Jeff Blim
Witch: Britney Coleman
19:37 Oof this was somewhat prescient. A lot can happen in 2 weeks.
Alex as rapunzel is truly an inspired choice
Thank you so much for this series!! Into the Woods was my first Sondheim show as well - I ended up being in pit for two different productions of it, and hearing the flute line in Agony just now really hit different for some reason
These are fantastic choices!! I'd love to hear Brant's Giants in the Sky omg
My favourite Sondheim musical is west side story. I would probably cast it like this:
Tony: Dylan Saunders
Maria: Lauren Lopez/ Mariah Rose Faith
Anita: Rachael Soglin
Riff: Robert Manion
Action: Joe Walker
Bernardo: Clark Baxtresser
Doc: Joey Richter
Glad Hand: Jeff Blim
(I think I got all the main characters, feel free to comment any other ideas)
I didn't cast this show because of the ethnicities of the characters and the fact that they're way too old for these roles now, but as a hypothetical I like this!
Silvana Ltd. that’s understandable
Joey Richter as Tony, there's no other choice. Cause IIIII- nope.
@@grace5033 big fish, small pond, but i was proud
As a huge Starkid fan, and a HUGE Sondheim fan, thank you for these wonderful videos. I love your content, and I was especially excited to find video essays about Sondheim and Starkid!
Thanks so much!
I love this casting so much! I think Jon would also be such an amazing Baker. I'd love to see him play more fatherly characters! I'd also love to see the range of Lauren as Cinderella. All of these would really show their acting ranges and freaking love that!
I saw into the woods at this historic theatre a few years ago it was so cool
Ah it's my fav!
Robert would be absolutely perfect for the prince and the wolf. Was hoping to see Jeff or Joey as Rapunzels Prince, but still very good.
A Robert and Curt duet needs to happen
But who would be the giantess?! I say Kendall
I like it!
She's literally the youngest, and therefore one of the short ones. How would that make sense?
@@grace5033 that's why, because it could be a bit
@@grace5033 Well, height has literally nothing to do with it since it's just a voice. I think it would be a fun bit lol.
Amazing as always!
yall in the comments complaining about how you were cinderellas father or snow white in the comments
but uh i have a one-up for you
i played a tree branch and a bird in our school's production of into the woods
so yeah :/
lmao you're the real star
@@SilvanaLTD yes thank you, my best role personally
@@catbanana110 I played the moon once in what was basically a children's knock off Into the Wood. I'm pretty sure it was my finest moment.
@@SilvanaLTD that's so beautiful, i'm so proud.
My only role, to this day, was when I played Kaa's ASS in The Jungle Book... mind you, this was 4 years ago!
I was personally thinking Kendall Nicole Yakshe for Little Red but, ya know, to each their own
I didn't want to cast just one kid since there was no kid to play Jack, but she could definitely do it!
These are perfect
brant cox as jack is SUCH a hot take!
I also would love to see Jaime Lyn as the witch 🥰
I'm so sad this series is over. I've loved these videos so much.
Thanks for watching! I'm really sad it's over too. It's been way longer for me since I started making these videos months ago. I want to do some more dreamcasts of different shows eventually and of course I'll make other videos in the mean time too.
@@SilvanaLTD I'm looking forward to what you have next in store. ♥️
Inspired by the pinned comment, I have a Follies cast I developed. Thoughts? I hope it's not too late to contribute
Sally Durant Plummer: Jaime Lyn Beatty
Buddy Plummer: Curt Mega
Phyllis Rogers Stone: Meredith Stepien
Ben Stone: Corey Dorris
Young Sally: Alex Paul
Young Buddy: Tyler Brunsman
Young Ben: James Tolbert
Young Phyllis: Mariah Rose Faith
Carlotta Campion: Brittany Coleman
Stella Deems: Denise Donovan
Solange La Fitte: Alle-Faye Monka
Hattie Walker: Lily Marks
Heidi Schiller: Jamie Burns
Young Heidi: Kim Whalen
Emily Whitman: Lauren Lopez
Theodore Whitman: Joey Richter
Dimitri Weismann: Nick Lang
Roscoe: Jeff Blim or AJ Holmes
Absolutely never too late! Absolutely love Meredith as Phyllis. I feel like I cast her in so many roles but I think she really fits in the world of Sondheim shows. And who knows, since a lot of those roles are meant for older actors it's not too late for it to really happen.
@@SilvanaLTD My train of thought for the most part was older Starkids as the older folks and newer Starkids as the younger versions. I didn't follow through for all of it, partially because I think Curt has enough of the range -- I can see his Buddy's Blues having enough of the Howard Goodman/Officer Bailey levels of unhinged -- If I went with an older Starkid, I'd probably go with Brosenthal or Dylan [Dylan's "The Right Girl" would kill me personally]. then make Curt Young Buddy.
Edit: AJ could also make a good Buddy
(Meredith is also my Charlotte Malcolm in my hypothetical Starkid ALNM cast)
I’m the narrator/man!
lauren as cinderella because she reminds me of anna kendrick who is cinderella
i agree lol
A+ casting overall, but I would have loved to see perhaps Nick Gage as the narrator/mysterious man. 🤷 ♥️
Ooo I could see it! Although I didn't make a video for it, I would also cast him as Dr. Tambourri in Passion
@@SilvanaLTD Thanks! I loved this series and how well thought out the casting was. 🖤
