Great review! As an audiophile myself, I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality of the new Tesla 3's standard system. I was worried it wouldn't meet my expectations, but it definitely exceeded them. It's refreshing to see a focus on clarity and balance rather than just pumping out bass like many other systems. It’d be great to have those subwoofers for movies and games, but for pure music listening, a well-rounded sound profile is key.

@@aaron4857BLRO I did experiment with some of the settings initially-enabled 'Immersive Sound' and played around with the equalizer. However, in the end, I turned everything off and I'm happy with the overall sound quality as it is. That said, I'm a little disappointed with Tidal's implementation on Tesla's system. It seems some of the features are not available, and frequently, tracks fail to load.

Thank god for TotallyEV! Finally found a proper review of the sound system on the RWD version… The only reason I would even consider the AWD version is because of the better sound system. But in the Netherlands here, it’s actually a price difference of about 13000 euros since it’s 10000 more AND you don’t get the government subsidy of 3000. So 13000 for a better sound system is a bit nuts! 😂 I was relieved to hear before I bought the RWD (which I pick up in 2 days) that the sounds system is actually very good … and you’ve just confirmed that properly. Big relief! I’m sure that there will also be aftermarket subwoofers to add, so I’ll start saving up for that 😅 Again thanks a lot for taking the time for this review.. invaluable and I’ve subscribed. ❤

Took delivery of a M3LR a few days ago. If you play music from a USB drive, it doesn't recognize M3U playlists. Also doesn't recognize CUE files for gapless playback (eg Goldberg Variations). As a workaround, I'm recreating some of my playlists on Apple Music. It handles those OK. Most annoying noise intrusion in the cabin is the climate system blowing air through that new fabric on the dash. But overall, the sound is better than any other car I've been in. I'm a professional musician, listen to mostly classical and jazz.

I just tested both audio. The AWD audio might catch you first with the 17 speaker system with two subwoofers. Surprisingly I found that the 9 speaker system in the RWD actually sounds more focused for both vocal Hi-Fi soundtracks and bassy club music.

I've needed to adjust the tone controls - increased the bass a touch and moved the sound slightly further back. It's getting better and better. Great review. Nice to know that you are not being short changed by going for the efficient RWD model. In my experience of our last few cars, I don't know how much is marketing and how much is true quality with in car systems. My wife's old Audi S3 came with a B&O system with 14 speakers and apparently 700W+. Sounded bang on average. Could never get it to sound good. And we have owned much cheaper cars with excellent audio systems! Its a real crap shoot.

Indeed, it's hard to know what to expect even from known audio manufacturers. My biggest issue with B&O systems generally is that they don't give you midrange EQ controls, which is really odd and downgrades the vocal listening experience.

Definitely makes sense on a quality vs cost scale. In many markets the LR doesn't get a an EV subsidy, where as the RWD does. And essentially it's got exactly the same tech features and it's still a high performance car. The LR one is just even higher power / battery performance, faster charging (although 170Kwh as per the RWD is still damn fast and generally, currently, in most regions, most of the chargers you will be going to will not so often be more than 150kwh chargers), and of course the sound system. But as per this TotallyEV review, the RWD sound system is still class leading.
