Didn't harm Loreen both times. I absolutely love Dizzy, the only song I've totally connected with so far and I can't wait to see what he brings to the live show.

I like it more than I thought I would. It has a slight Pet Shop Boys melancholic tone which I love. Great modern UK synth pop. People complaining that this just regular music from the radio sometimes forget that this is something that is part of modern UK music culture that they have exported to us already years ago.
Perhaps not a winner but with good staging and performance this could be on the left side on the board.

  • @JPA65

The guy who’s doing his staging is the same guy who did his ‘It’s a sin’ Brits staging with Elton and that was exquisite! So have full faith in it being extremely well executed.
As someone else said he’s also confirmed he’ll have 4 dancers.
Hopefully a slight Eurovision mix will take place for the end of the song for that extra gravitas.
I have complete and under faith in him putting on a performance we can be extremely proud of no matter what happens.

Other reviews / fan have been very mixed to say the least! I love the song.....catchy, well constructed ( bells & synth)and performed by an established artist. No fears for a substandard staging/ performance. So I wish him luck and make sure he enjoys this wonderful ESC24 in Malmö. From a true , proud & supportive Brit.

The production is very high quality and there are a lot of subtle musical embellishments in the instrumental, which is actually a lot more complex than people think. I think this could do well with juries/ music professionals because it’s such a well-constructed song.
The melody is what’s basic about the song. It’s basically a circle of fifths and a bit pedestrian.
I think you’ll find few people who will say this is a terrible song, but I find it difficult to see how this song will prompt people to vote for it and I think it could end up being in a lot of people’s top 10 or 15 but that doesn’t necessarily translate well to a good result.

The curious thing is, 80s/90s synth itself is coming full circle (and I'm all here for it), and this leans hard into that. Appropriately, considering It's A Sin, Olly appears to have been influenced heavily by Pet Shop Boys with this. My late mother would have adored this, so perhaps it's a little sentimental on my part, but I do love it too and I know Olly and his team will have been planning the staging for ages. (Think about how long ago he was announced, genuinely think he was on board basically as soon as the last Eurovision ended).

It may be a year of big songs but this is by far my favourite and the only one I’m actually listening to repeatedly. Which I guess does mean it’s probably too radio friendly for the show, oh well. I saw a clip of Olly being asked to describe his staging in 3 words and I think he said “unexpected, memorable, enchanting “ so I’m really excited for the live show. He does still have a European fan base so I think that will surely help in the televoting? The opinion of the generally miserable Brits doesn’t matter since “Vous ne pouvez pas voter pour votre propre pays” 😂 I watched the reaction of a random Portuguese girl who went absolutely nuts for the song so that gave me some hope 😂 I love your enthusiasm and intelligent analysis for this song, and for everything in general, the only Eurovision expert I ever bother watching. I honestly wasnt sure whether id like this, and when i first heard this, i wasnt crazy about it. I genuinely was dissapointed because im a huge fan of Danny L Harle, and this felt so watered down compared to his other stuff which is so much more out there, but its genuinely grown on me the more i hear it. Now i absolutely love it! Its unlike anything else in the competition this year and i adore the music video. I hope and pray they take cues from the music video for the staging this year (which they SHOULD have done last year!). Its so visually rich.
The music is so reminiscent of "Deeper Shade Of Blue" by Steps, and it also reminds me of "Its A Sin" by the Pet Shop Boys.
People complaining saying its not dramatic with huge crescendo's.....to be honest im glad as we already have tonnes of entries this year that are dramatic. Im glad its so much gentler.
I also love that you love this! I wasnt sure if it would strike a chord with you, but its fab to see you connect with the lyrics and the visual concept.

One of the best reactions I've seen. Your second reaction was like you were having an orgasm 😂. I like the lyrics too especially in the first verse, though I've seen others describe them as basic? I also appreciate how you include JESC results in the Renaissance idea too, cos most fans ignore them despite it being the same team at the BBC. A lot of people think it's generic and not impactful enough, but I'm wondering if that could be its strength. In a year where there's so much out-thereness and in-your-face stuff, something more mainstream and chill may appeal to some, especially the juries. Btw, the song wasn't written for Eurovision. They wrote it for Olly's album, and then decided to submit some of the songs for Eurovision. Staging wise we know there will be 4 male dancers. Olly's doing a live performance this Saturday on ITV (yes, ITV) but the staging on Saturday Night Takeaway won't be like what we'll get in Malmö.

I think the song is inoffensive and decent, but I don't really feel like it goes anywhere. There's no build in it. Once you've heard the first chorus, you've heard everything the song has to offer except the spoken bit, which doesn't feel like much of a respite when the rest of the song is so tame to begin with. I wish it had a more interesting melody, drama, a build-up or something. At this rate, I think his live performance is going to have to incorporate killer visuals through choreo or something cause otherwise this just isn't anything special.

What a detailed analysis! Fabulous thank you! Agree with what you’ve said, I think it’s a very considered choice and the BBC, staging team and label will have been working on the final package for a long time. I would go as far to say this was probably picked above other songs for the staging potential. Olly is pure magic with the cameras and his choreo is really excellent, plus the budget must be big. I think this could do really well. It's a very polished pop song, so juries will love it. And the staging could win over Televoters as well. (Bonus points if the song becomes a hit in Europe, a la Blue)
I do think a revamp is needed to give the song a little oompf, but the last two uk entries did have changes for the live performance, so i expect there to be one.

I honestly just think it's the final chorus after the spoken word part that needs reworking, because that's what feels a bit flat here - it doesn't feel like a satisfying progression from the other times we hear the chorus. It's only really a small change needed and some impactful staging that could turn this from feeling a bit middling to a clearer top 10 contender.
I'm still optimistic that this can get a good result if the staging is strong, and I think Tom's predictions for jury/televote placings are about right. In a year like this, I feel like juries might reward a song like this, maybe around 100 with the old 12 here or there and blanks elsewhere. Harder to tell whether this could cut through this year's noise in the televote.

Loved hearing your positive review, I agree that it has a lot of visual potential in the staging! I'm wondering if maybe part of why the song received a bit of a lukewarm reaction initially was because they released the song before the music video? Listening to the song on its own, it doesn't sound as dynamic at first, although it's definitely grown on me! What are your thoughts on the strategy for internal selections releasing the artist/song/video at the same time (like Switzerland, it really had an impact when it was all unveiled at once!) vs. releasing the artist, then the song, then the video (like the UK, expectations were very high and then the song on it's own didn't quite deliver?).

Great analysis as always, I agree with pretty much everything you said. Honestly to me the song is nothing special, and if they gave it to any unknown artist it probably wouldn’t work out great, but it’s the performance and character that Olly gives it that have the potential to make it stand out. It’s definitely all down to the staging, they really need to go all out with something memorable.
As a Brit who’s a fan of the contest, it’s always baffling to me how the general public responds. We come second and we get hopeful, and then last year’s result happens and suddenly Sam’s result was just a fluke, and Europe hates us again etc. Honestly I think there’s a sense of entitlement that we’re owed a good result just because of the success of our music industry, and because people are stuck in the past they don’t appreciate that other countries have their own emerging industries (or that the world is globalised, and half the country’s songs are written by foreign nationals). So I’m really hoping we deliver another respectable result this year to cement the fact that if you put in effort, it pays off. From just how well we did in 2022, I feel like the juries especially actually WANT an excuse to give us points. But at the end of the day, the contest is unpredictable and even something really polished can end up low just due to circumstance. So I’m just hoping the lottery plays in our favour to encourage the public to actually have faith in our entries, and then we’ll snowball from there.

So many have been negative about this and I get some of the criticism - that last chorus could have some more punch but the expectations were so high he couldn't have met them and after listening to it a few times I love it, and really all I want from the UK is for "us" to send something decent from a credible artist that feels like it's a UK track and not something trying to win Eurovision that is performed well on the night. Do that and I don't care if we win. Would be great to do well, but more important to be genuine and this fills that bill so far.

There is still scope to do stuff and make changes, particularly with the spoken word part. Anyway, Ireland is one of my favourites, and I do love it so I REALLY hope there are positive results for both! Thanks for such a positive video Tom

A nice song which will probably come with an amazing stagging and a theatrical cool performance. So it is likely to be memorable. Lyrics are economical, though creative. However, for me it won't be enough to camouflage the fact that it is an underwhelmed song which sounds like a lot of other songs I have heard before. Unless, the song comes with some changes, it will not wow the juries vocally either. For me it also sounds very flat from start to finish, sounds very repetitive, though it is very catchy. I am worried that the big budget thrown at it in the final, will not be enough to overcome all the other barriers.

I don't think this is going to make much of an impact unfortunately and I think it will get lost among better entries in the night. The chorus is a bit flat musically, at least for Eurovision. Maybe the staging will turn it around for me but I'm not holding my breath.

My first impression was slight disappointment. I really liked Years & Years and I didn't find this as fresh as their songs. That being said, it's very solid and slick and I like the old school UK synth vibe. I guess I can get over that it's just something different than I expected, which is the risk when a big name comes to Eurovision. It's a good entry and I have no doubt Olly will perform the hell out of it.

Tattoo is a radio-friendly pop song as well. What matters is how enjoyable the song is and the way in which the song is brought to the Eurovision stage. I can see this easily reaching top 15 which is a fantastic position for the UK. Top 10 is also possible, I think.

@@charliedell4994I agree with this. Personally it doesn’t matter if the song is a “radio-friendly” song or not. If it’s done well both in the studio cut and on the stage, then it will do well in the results.
And besides, by UK standards, this just means the BBC is still taking the contest seriously. I think fans should have lowered their expectations, because I believe the UK needs baby steps to achieve success at the same level as the other contemporary heavy hitters like Italy and Ukraine.

I have no doubt it will chart well, especially in the UK.
I also think there's too much hype around it.
People are so unhappy about previous results that even this "no more than" nice song awakens expectations.
Considering the number o generic, non descript songs, I think that, with a good stanging, a top 20 could be well within its possibilities, perhaps even a top 15.

I agree with almost all of this, especially that this song hangs on the staging. It needs a Sam Ryder moment. BUT, I can't say I think this is a strong year. We have a lot of songs trying to be Cha Cha Cha but without the authenticity. I've been pretty disappointed in general.
