  • I love free plants! Propagation is how you get plants for free. Propagating Canna Lillies is easy. Canna Lilies are one of the easiest plants to propagate, they can be propagated by seed and by division. This is a Canna Lily that I propagated last winter and now I am going to propagate it again. During the winter and spring, this Canna Lily grew a large rhizome underground. Now that it is April, I want to fill in my tropical garden with more Canna Lily plants.
To propagate a Canna Lily plant in the spring that is already growing, just dig up the plant and separate the stalks by dividing the rhizome. Each part of the rhizome will grow even more plants from the eyes on the rhizome. Many online sellers sell them as bulbs, but they are not bulbs they are rhizomes.
Most parts of the rhizome can be divided by hand. But, in some parts the rhizome is so thick, I had to use a knife to separate them. After dividing the rhizome, planting the Canna Lily is easy, just dig a hole and bury the rhizome a few inches deep, and give it lots of water.

So awesome! I can bary wait to dig mine up and see how they have multiplied! I already harvested 18 seeds to grow new plants in addition to the rhizomes I'll dig up this fall. Praise the Lord! What a fun hobby!❤🎉❤

Great vid. As a beginner gardener, this showed me not to be scared or delicate with the plants. You really can just pull them apart or cut with a knife as shown

These Canna rhizomes are tough, don't be afraid to try different things and experiment with your plants. That's the fun part for me!

Thank you, Canna Lilies are so easy to propagate. You’ll soon have the same problem I have, I don’t have enough garden space for all these cannas.😀

I live in the midwest. I believe zone 5. Cold winters, snow, and sometimes below 0. Since its August is it too late for me to separate them and replant them? It usually starts getting cold about the middle Oct maybe a little earlier or a little later. So basically 2 months. I don't care so much about getting new foliage, the ones I have are blocking sunlight to my other plants and I just want to multiply what I have.

Do the rhizomes survive in the ground during the winter and grow back in the spring? If so, you could dig up the plant and divide the rhizomes and plant them elsewhere. If you have a lot of divided rhizomes with eyes, you could keep a few indoors for the winter. Google “how to overwinter canna rhizomes” because I have never done it.

@@Tropifornia My mother planted them every spring and dug them up every fall. So that tells me no they cannot stay in the ground. This is my first year of planting them. Unfortunately, I was young when my mother was gardening and didn't pay attention. Wish I had now... Thank you for your quick response.

I’m in zone 9b, so I just leave them in the ground and they regrow in the spring. How do you store your canna lilies?

I live in eastern countries and the temperature reaches 50 degrees and the kanna lily burns completely. Can it be grown indoors?
Are there famous gardens with a pond in which they grow canna lilies? It means that she lives in the pond and loves water

Some can grow 3 meters high, so give them lots of room and sunlight.
