HUNT THE NIGHT - An Unpolished Masterpiece | Complete Review

- Hunt the Night is a masterpiece... almost. A lack of polish and a few questionable design decisions hold it back from true 16-bit Soulslike glory, but incredible worldbuilding, memorable bosses, and a wonderful visual variety make it well worth the $20 (assuming you like a challenge).

I have had this on my Steam wishlist for a couple of years now. Something about that art-style just caught my eye. Glad to see it turned out well!
Wow, I hope it lives up to the two years of anticipation! And thanks for watching, I really appreciate the support :)
There's some irony in the idea that your ethereal phantom's only use is to have mass.
But it's strange to me that the idea of 'limited ammo ranged weapons recharged by melee' has popped up so much out of nowhere recently. I hadn't seen that mechanic much before and now it's in this, Gestalt Steam and Cinder, and that Valfaris sequel.
Ha! Yes, the irony is as thick as Umbra's not-so-ghostly thighs. And that's an interesting observation about rechargeable ammo-I think I'm okay with the growing trend, as I enjoy the style of combat it encourages.
@@MEGAthemicro 100% agree on the mechanic!! I prefer to a static cooldown so much it’s not even funny, it gives combat systems so much higher of a skill ceiling to be had imo which can add a nice subtle depth
This was an excellent review. Nicely done!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
I have to say you did an amazing job writing this review, the script was top notch and very well written 👍 appreciate the hard work
Thank you so much, Ryan! The publisher was kind enough to give folks a lot of time with the game pre-release, so I was able to pour my heart into playing/making this review :)
Yeah, that's about what I expected. Even if you miss the mark, aiming that high means you will land in a decent place. Not a perfect game, from the sounds of it, but I will probably get it day one once it migrates to consoles (later this year, I hope).
Great review. Thorough without being long-winded
Thanks for watching, Thomas! Yes, it's clear that HTN's devs set their sights quite high, and it shows. Hopefully you won't have too long to wait on console :)
Great review! I also did a review of the game (in Danish), and I agree with a lot of your points. I really thought the soundtrack and sound design was incredibly immersive if you play with headphones as recommended. My main issue with the game is actually that bosses are too difficult; maybe you're just a better player than me, haha. Dungeons are stellar, and the Gothic atmosphere is really off the charts.
Thank you, Troels! Glad to hear you agree with much of the review. The game is definitely hard, but I found it addicting and couldn't bring myself to quit haha. Curious, is there a link to your review with English subtitles? Would love to read it :D
Oh, and great guitar playing btw :)
@@MEGAthemicro Same, even if at times I was furious at a boss (the game's second boss in particular was just maddening), combat was fun enough for me to keep pushing.
My review for Gamereactor is unfortunately only in Danish. You could always try Google translating it, but I don't think the result will be pretty ;)
Oh, thank you so much on the guitar compliment :)
Took me nearly an hour to beat the 2nd boss, with KB&M, which made me wish the game had that little Souls-like leveling system or a better shop (considering the only thing we could've bought at that point... is 1 crossbow, which is a waste of ammo for the boss compared to the pistol/shotgun). Having to drag my mouse to aim an invisible cursor so Vesper melee the right 4 direction is a bit of a pain.
Hey, I was wondering how long an average playthrough would be. I'm not one to replay games much so I'm curious as to if I'd get my full value.
Hi! I made it through HTN in about 20 hours and consider it well worth it at $20. The game is hard as heck, though, so it might take you shorter/longer based on your Soulslike experience level. Let me know if you have any other questions :)
I could definitely see myself enjoying that.
Indeed! This game has "Ladaas" written all over it :D
So is this a buy? Im hearing mixed reviews of it on steam but the demo was great for me....
I think Hunt the Night is definitely worth it at $20, assuming you don't mind a challenge (and an infrequent bug or two).
what a great review!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Does the game have a difficulty select or accessibilty options?
No. And the game can be extremely difficult as is.
As Troels mentioned, no difficulty options, but you spawn right outside boss fights so there's no annoying backtracking involved. Also, if you do play, be sure to prioritize getting more healing roses and upgrading them-you can get up to five (I believe), and at max level they're close to a full heal. Makes fights much easier to survive.
@@MEGAthemicro Did you find yourself wanting multiple difficulty levels? I know you said you got through the game as is, so maybe it was a fair difficulty.
@@pianokid103 Good question! I find myself wishing for an "Easy" mode every time I face a new Soulslike boss... then I settle down, start memorizing patterns, and before I know it the boss is dead. There's something to be said for forcing players to suffer :D
One of the games of the year imho at least for a small indie dev who did a successful crowdfunder to get this going.
Agreed! It's a rare feel-good story in the world of crowdfunding-the devs should be proud about what they accomplished.
This game feels like it's in an early access state but has immense potential
really? Dam I had high hopes for this after playing the demo back in Feb...I wish they woulda just kept working on it to make it perfect....
I agree from a bug/polishing standpoint, but there's definitely a full game's worth of content here. 18 to 25 hours worth, based on my playthrough. In other words, after a patch or two, Hunt the Night should be complete.
I've been following Hunt The Night, may buy it, my kinda game.🙂🙂
Is it worth full price?
I certainly think so at it's reasonable launch price of $20. It should take most folks around 20 hours to complete, and the world is interesting enough to warrant a repeat playthrough.
@@MEGAthemicro k it's 25.99 cdn for me, definitely interested. One of my favorite games last year was There Is No Light. Hope this kinda feels like that.
I keep reading that Hunt The Night is similar to There Is No Light.
Sold☺️☺️
I'll buy this later today.
Yes, I adored TINL and do think it's a solid comparison. That said, I consider TINL superior to HTN in a number of ways, both mechanically and stylistically. So many don't go in expecting the same highs :)
@@MEGAthemicro I won't. Yea I absolutely loved TINL, absolutely awesome and addictive game.
Have you played Black Skylands? My kind of game. It's 40 percent off. I'm wondering if it's worth it.
they gotta learn from hyper light drifter's combat system
Just finished this game and can't say that the game's story was much like bloodborne at all, though the atmosphere it was going for was the same.
Other than that I pretty much agree with your review, though I, thankfully, got through the game without any bugs
Yeah, that Bloodborne comment was meant as a half joke/half observation about the overlapping lore and atmosphere, as you note. And I'm happy to hear you got through bug-free, as it suggests the devs have cleaned some things up.
Thanks for watching!
👍👍👍
Cheers, thanks for watching!
I do find it funny how they somehow made combat and traversal far worse than one of their previous game, Crosscode. It essentially have a nice dash traversal system with a far better combat system with less jank to deal with, unlike Hunt the Night.
Thankfully, they did bring one negative from Crosscode to this game. Pacing. Oh my both game pacing could use some better directing.
Uuuh, a new value bar, nice addition 👍
Yeah and the review was ok i guess. Paperweight *hrhr* Jokes aside, well done as always!
I can always count on you to notice a scoring system tweak, Chris! I made this change because Value isn't solely specific to "Content" and it makes more sense to address the game's overall value/whether I recommend it at the end of the video, anyway. At least, that's what I think :)
@@MEGAthemicro You sure can 🧐 And i totally agree, that's why i think it's a good addition.
Pc only?
For now. Console versions are supposedly coming down the line.
I love soulslikes and metroidvanias, but somehow i really dont enjoy games of that type that are isometric. I didnt like Morbid seven acolytes, I didnt like There is no light, I didnt like demo of Hunt the night. I think this design is obscuring the view and controls dont work as well as in third person or flat 2D view.
Despite me liking Hunt the Night and loving There Is No Light, I agree with what you're saying. Isometric Soulslikes never seem to feel as precise as do their side-scrolling or 3D counterparts.
Have you tried Crosscode? Same developer, but far better gameplay compared to Hunt the Night, imo. The puzzles might not be to your liking, but the basic idea of slashing enemy, shooting bullets at the enemy and traversing around with a dash button is all there.
@@justjuniorjaw I haven't, but it looks fun! However, it looks like the publisher is the same (DANGEN Entertainment), not the developer (Moonlight Games for HTN; Radical Fish Games for Crosscode). Hence why the combat/movement systems probably feel so different.
@@MEGAthemicro You're right on that, but I was suggesting to the OP as they didn't seem to like isometric style games, which is understandable as it needs time to get used to.
I personally find Crosscode to be one of the best one in the market, alongside Hades so I can wholly recommend that game to the OP just to see what a better isometric game feel like. However, I will say that this game is more puzzle focused compared to combat focused (about 60/40 puzzle/combat) with more inventory and ability management, so that's a few big difference compared to the skill-based, combat first game that Hunt the Night is.
